Monitor a deployed smart contract by defining the actions that matter, instrumenting them with events, watching relevant transactions, and routing tuned alerts to people who can respond. Monitoring improves visibility; it does not patch immutable code, prove that an alert is an attack, or guarantee that an exploit can be stopped.
What to monitor in a deployed contract
Begin with the assets at risk, the contract’s security invariants, and the roles that can change permissions or move value. For each important function and event, write down what normal activity looks like, then identify deviations worth investigating.

- Privileged actions: ownership or role changes, upgrades, pauses, unpauses, and calls by unexpected addresses.
- Value movement: unusually large withdrawals, transfers outside expected ranges, or abrupt changes in transaction volume.
- Supply changes: mints or burns that exceed expected patterns or occur unexpectedly.
- Call patterns: unexpected function calls, a sudden rise in call frequency, or abnormal failed transactions.
There is no universal threshold that makes activity suspicious. Set limits from the contract’s expected behavior, assets at risk, and response capacity; a routine function for one protocol may be a critical exception for another. Ethereum.org recommends logging safety-critical actions and identifies transaction volume, function-call frequency, called functions, and withdrawal amounts as useful signals.

Instrument the contract and verify what the monitor sees
Emit events for safety-critical actions that off-chain systems and operators need to observe. Monitor relevant transaction properties as well as event data: an event-only view can miss activity if the contract did not emit the expected event or the monitor is not configured to recognize it.

Some monitoring systems use the contract ABI to interpret calls, parameters, and events. Check that the ABI matches the deployed contract and accurately represents its proxy or upgrade setup; a correct-looking alert rule is not useful if the monitor is reading the wrong interface. OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation describes monitors that watch transactions and apply conditions to parameters, filters, or events, relying on the underlying ABI.
Choose an approach that fits your chain and response needs
Monitoring approaches can be used separately or together. Compare chain coverage, the signals each approach can observe, alert quality, confirmation timing, and how alerts reach the people or systems responsible for response.
| Approach | What it can do | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Contract-specific event and transaction rules | Alert on named events, functions, values, or transaction patterns. | ABI accuracy, condition flexibility, supported chain, latency, confirmation depth, and notification controls. |
| Detection bots and threat feeds | Detect selected patterns or combine signals into broader alerts. Forta documents bots for suspicious contract creation, known exploiter addresses, anomalous transfers or volume, and monitored functions or events. | Bot and chain coverage, signal transparency, false-positive handling, and access through the app, API, or required integrations. |
| Managed platform monitoring | Configure monitors and route alerts to operational tools; some platforms can connect alerts to actions. | Network support, ABI and internal-call limits, notification destinations, rate controls, product status, and safeguards for automated actions. |
| Enterprise threat monitoring | Add specialized threat intelligence or market and exploit monitoring. | Whether the service covers the specific protocol and chain, operational fit, response integration, and procurement terms. The cited Chainalysis material does not establish general availability or pricing. |
Forta’s Attack Detector combines alerts across funding, preparation, exploitation, and post-exploitation or money-laundering stages. Forta cautions that underlying alerts can have low precision, so treat them as leads to assess in context, not confirmed incidents. Its curated bridge and stablecoin kits include examples such as anomalous token transfers and volume, exploiter-address interactions, suspicious contract creation, and privileged-event or function monitoring. These examples do not establish coverage for any particular deployment.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfigure alerts to be actionable
Separate alerts by risk
Use distinct rules and severity levels for materially different conditions. A high-severity ownership change or unexpected pause should not be buried in routine transfer notifications. OpenZeppelin groups monitor examples into governance, access control, suspicious activity, financial, and technical categories, and documents severity labels and notification thresholds.

Set thresholds and notification limits
Tune thresholds to observed expected behavior and the cost of a missed signal. Control repeated notifications and review false positives so that alert volume does not train the on-call team to ignore messages. OpenZeppelin documents rate controls for repeated notifications.
Choose confirmation depth deliberately
Fewer confirmations can reduce alert delay but leave more exposure to a chain reorganization; waiting for more confirmations increases confidence that the transaction remains accepted while delaying response. Choose and document a depth appropriate to the chain and the action being monitored.
Route alerts to an owner
An alert needs a destination that is monitored and an identified person or team responsible for acting on it. Define who reviews the signal, who escalates it, and who has authority to take protective action. OpenZeppelin lists integrations including Slack, Telegram, Discord, email, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, and custom APIs. Forta describes access through its app and API, as well as integrations through Defender Forta Sentinels.
Prepare an incident response before an alert fires
Write down how the team will validate an alert, contact authorized signers, decide whether to pause or upgrade, and communicate with users. Rehearse the procedure in a safe environment, including key access and required approvals. An alert alone is not proof of an exploit, and an automated response can cause harm if its detector fires incorrectly.

Forta documents a Sentinel integration with Defender Autotasks that can call a contract method such as pause(). Use this kind of automation only when the contract supports the action, authorization is carefully controlled, and the response has been tested; preserve a human escalation path.
Product scope and availability to verify
OpenZeppelin Monitor
OpenZeppelin’s Defender documentation says Defender is in maintenance mode and recommends migrating monitoring to OpenZeppelin Monitor. The Monitor documentation says it supports networks except Fantom, while internal function-call tracking is currently limited to Ethereum mainnet. Verify the current documentation against the intended network and contract before adoption.
Tenderly Real-Time Alerting
Ethereum.org names Tenderly Real-Time Alerting as an option for notifications about unusual or unexpected activity on contracts and wallets. The cited material does not establish current plans, pricing, or exact network coverage, so check current product documentation before choosing it.

Chainalysis describes Hexagate in the context of stablecoin programs. The cited material does not establish general availability or pricing; assess whether its coverage, operational fit, and procurement terms suit the protocol.
Quick Recap
Know what monitoring cannot do
- It does not prevent an exploit by itself. Detection only helps if the contract has usable controls, authorized responders can act, and there is time to do so.
- It cannot observe every failure mode. Rule coverage, ABI correctness, bot coverage, chain support, and alert delivery all affect what operators see.
- Signals may be noisy or delayed. False positives, notification fatigue, and confirmation settings affect how quickly a useful alert is noticed and trusted.
- It cannot make an immutable deployment safe. Ethereum.org notes that deployed code usually cannot be changed to patch flaws and that stolen assets are difficult to recover. The page gives an estimate of more than $1 billion in value stolen or lost due to smart-contract security defects, while noting that estimates vary; this is not a current annual-loss figure or a precisely audited total.
