What to Do If a Baby Pool Float Tips or Deflates

A baby can be at risk of submersion when a float tips, leaks, or deflates. Here are the immediate response steps, supervision guidance, and current CPSC warnings.

If a baby’s pool float tips, leaks, or deflates, get the baby out of the water as quickly and safely as you can. Call for help; have someone contact emergency medical services (EMS). If the baby is unresponsive or not breathing normally, call EMS and begin CPR according to your training. Drowning-related CPR includes rescue breaths and chest compressions.

What to do immediately if a baby’s float tips or deflates

  1. Get the baby out of the water. Reach or throw a flotation aid if that can help you without putting yourself in danger. Do not enter unsafe water or attempt a rescue beyond your ability.
  2. Shout for help and have someone call EMS. If you are alone, call emergency services as soon as you can do so safely. Follow the dispatcher’s directions.
  3. Check responsiveness and breathing. If the baby is unresponsive or not breathing normally, begin CPR in line with your training and the dispatcher’s instructions.
  4. Use an AED if one is available. Follow its prompts and continue care until emergency responders take over.

The American Red Cross recommends recognizing distress and calling for help, removing the person from the water without endangering the rescuer, calling EMS, starting rescue breathing and CPR, and using an AED if available. The American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics say drowning-related cardiac arrest requires CPR with rescue breaths and chest compressions. In-water rescue breathing is only for appropriately trained rescuers when doing it does not compromise their safety. These are emergency-response principles, not a substitute for hands-on infant CPR training or EMS care.

Why a float failure can become dangerous quickly

A tipping float, loss of air, or a baby slipping through an opening can lead to submersion. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns that a child can slip through a neck float if it is underinflated, leaking, or slippery. Inflatable toys and swimming aids are not safety equipment and should not be relied on to keep a child safe.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), as reported by the AAP in 2026, received 115 neck-float incident reports from January 2019 through January 2024. The reports included two infant deaths and two injuries requiring hospitalization. This is a count of reports received, not an incident rate or an estimate of all events.

How to supervise a baby around a pool

  • Use touch supervision. Stay close enough to keep a hand on the baby while the child is in or near the water. Do not rely on a float to keep the baby above water.
  • Do not treat inflatable aids as life jackets. The AAP advises that inflatable swimming aids are not substitutes for approved life jackets, and its May 18, 2026 pool-safety guidance says to avoid floaties, water wings, and inflatable toys as safety substitutes.
  • Use a life jacket when appropriate. A properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is a different product from an inflatable toy. Follow its fit and use limits, and continue direct adult supervision; a life jacket does not make supervision optional.
  • Learn emergency skills in advance. The Red Cross recommends CPR and water-safety training. Training helps prepare caregivers, but it does not replace calling EMS when an emergency occurs.

Check current warnings for the specific product

Otteroo LUMI and MINI neck floats

In a June 15, 2026 release, CPSC said the first federal safety standard for infant neck floats is in effect for products manufactured after June 15, 2026. The standard addresses hazards including children slipping through because of inflation-related problems such as deflation or underinflation. In the same release, CPSC renewed its warning not to buy, use, resell, or donate Otteroo LUMI, MINI, or earlier versions. CPSC said the earlier warning followed a reported infant drowning, a serious injury, and dozens of rescue incidents. The new standard does not make close supervision optional, and CPSC’s named warning should not be generalized to every brand.

“Relaxing Baby” floats

On April 2, 2026, CPSC warned that “Relaxing Baby” floats can flip or submerge their occupants. CPSC reported one drowning death involving a two-year-old and directed consumers to puncture and dispose of the floats rather than sell or give them away. If you have this named product, follow CPSC’s disposal direction; do not pass it to another family.

Are Baby Neck Floats Safe to Use in the Tub or Pool?

A neck float should not be treated as a safety device in either setting. The AAP warns that a baby can slip through a neck float if it is underinflated, leaking, or slippery, and recommends touch supervision. A float or other inflatable aid does not replace an adult staying close enough to keep a hand on the child. For water activities, follow current product warnings and use direct supervision regardless of the flotation product.
