During installation, the device and its files are unavailable, and you cannot make calls—including emergency calls. Update timing and instructions can vary by model, country, and carrier, so use the prompts and information shown for your own phone.
Before you begin: a preparation checklist
- Back up important data. Samsung supports backup through a Samsung account, a Google account, or Smart Switch. Use the current instructions on your phone; menu paths differ across Android versions.
- Check which software is installed and what update is offered. The update menu and its wording can vary by device and carrier.
- Review the update details. Changes can differ by model, country, and service provider. If your phone is carrier-associated, check the original carrier’s support information too.
- Plan around the interruption. Do not start when you may need the phone for work, travel, caregiving, or an emergency.
- Use a suitable connection and enough storage. Some carriers require Wi-Fi, and an update may fail if the phone does not have the storage it needs.
These checks help you avoid preventable data loss and inconvenient downtime. They do not guarantee that every update will install without a problem: availability and requirements depend on the specific device and release.

Check your current software and the update details
Find the update menu
On many Galaxy phones, start at Settings and open Software update. Depending on the model or carrier, the menu may instead be called System updates, and the button for checking or downloading may use different wording. Follow the labels on your screen rather than assuming that another Galaxy owner’s menu will be identical.

Read the information for your device
Look at the update details in the phone’s software-update settings. They can describe the changes included in that release, but the exact changes may vary by model, country, and service provider. A release note for a different Galaxy model—or the same model sold in another region—may not describe the update your phone will receive.
For a carrier-associated device, the original carrier may publish model-specific software release information. That is especially useful if you are waiting for a particular release or the phone says it is up to date when you expected an update.
Back up before installing
Keep a current backup of information you would not want to lose, such as personal files and other important content. Samsung describes three main backup routes: a Samsung account, a Google account, and Smart Switch. Which route is convenient depends on what accounts you use and whether you have access to a computer.

- Samsung account: Samsung’s UK backup guide describes backing up through Samsung Cloud with a Samsung account.
- Google account: The same guide covers using a Google account and Google Drive.
- Smart Switch: Samsung describes using Smart Switch to back up to a computer.
Use the instructions displayed on your own phone or the current Samsung guidance for your device. Samsung’s UK guide gives menu steps for Android 12 and notes that older Android versions use different paths; a set of menu instructions for one operating system should not be treated as universal. If you use a computer backup, make sure the backup completes before you begin the update.
A backup is a precaution, not a reason to expect an update to erase your data. It gives you a recovery option if something goes wrong or if you later need to reset the phone.
Choose a time when the phone can be offline
Samsung warns that the phone cannot be used while an update is installing and that files will be inaccessible. Calls cannot be made during that period, including emergency calls. The installation window is therefore not a good time to rely on the device for navigation, authentication, a work call, or urgent contact.

Start only when you can tolerate that interruption. Allow the phone to finish according to its on-screen prompts, and do not plan around an assumed duration: the reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish one installation time that applies to every model and update.
Choose the update route that fits your situation
Most owners should use the update option in Settings when it offers the release. Smart Switch on a computer is an alternative in some circumstances, but it is not a promise that a release unavailable over the air will always appear on a computer.

Using Smart Switch with a computer
If you choose this optional route, install Smart Switch on the computer and connect the phone using its included USB cable. Samsung notes that some computers may need an adapter. The cable packaged with the phone may be sufficient; a separate cable is not a prerequisite. If the included cable is missing or unsuitable, check that any replacement supports data and that its connectors match both the phone and computer.

Follow the prompts in Smart Switch and leave the phone connected and unused until the installation completes. Samsung’s Gulf-region Smart Switch instructions also call for adequate computer storage and a stable USB connection; local instructions and requirements may differ, so follow the guidance applicable to your device and region.
Install an offered update safely
- Open Settings and select Software update or System updates. The label varies; use the matching option shown on your phone.
- Choose the available check or download option. Follow the prompts displayed by the device. If a carrier requires Wi-Fi, connect to Wi-Fi before continuing.
- Review the update information. Confirm that the offered update is for your device and read the displayed details before starting installation.
- Begin only when you can be without the phone. Make sure your important data is backed up and that you will not need calls or files during installation.
- Let the installation finish. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not use the phone until it indicates that the update is complete.
If you prefer to update by computer, use the Smart Switch prompts instead of trying to combine steps from the two routes. A stable USB connection matters for that method; disconnecting or using the phone before it finishes can disrupt the process.

If an expected update is missing
A missing update does not by itself mean the phone is broken. Samsung says releases may be distributed in waves, so devices do not necessarily receive them at the same time. Timing can also depend on the model, country, and service provider.

- Check the original carrier’s release information. Carriers develop and release updates for carrier-associated devices, and their support pages may list software information by model.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if required. Some carrier configurations require Wi-Fi to download or install an update.
- Check the SIM situation. Samsung notes that some SIM-unlocked phones may need a SIM from the original carrier for the update to appear.
- Check again later. A release being distributed in waves may not be available to your phone yet.
- Consider Smart Switch on a PC if appropriate. Samsung includes it as a troubleshooting option, but do not assume it will always offer an update that is not available over the air.
Do not use a release date for another region or carrier as a guarantee for your device. The relevant information is the release status for your model and original service provider.
If a download or installation fails
The phone reports insufficient storage
Free the amount of storage indicated by the message, then try again. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance does not set one universal amount of free space for every update; use the figure shown on your phone rather than relying on a generic estimate.
The download was interrupted
If the download did not finish, Samsung says it may be possible to resume it from the notification. Follow that prompt if it is available instead of assuming that the update must be restarted from the beginning.

For persistent download problems, Samsung identifies Smart Switch as another option. Use a computer with the application installed and a stable USB connection, and follow the prompts. If the phone or computer reports a connection problem, check that the cable is connected securely and that the computer has enough available storage.
The phone will not boot normally after a failed update
Samsung says service may be required to reflash a device that no longer boots normally after a failed update. A factory reset is a separate recovery step and can erase data. Back up important information before attempting a reset when possible; Samsung cautions that it is not responsible for data loss. If the phone cannot start and you cannot make a backup, weigh the risk of losing local data before choosing a reset, or contact Samsung support for guidance.
