Before an Android screen repair, make a fresh backup and verify that important files are accessible away from the phone. Then check your manufacturer’s repair and privacy instructions, remove the SIM if required, and confirm the repair’s cost, timing and warranty before authorizing work. A repair privacy mode can limit what a technician sees, but it does not replace a backup.
Back up first and check what the backup covers
Make a fresh backup before handing over the phone or opening it for a DIY repair. Check its date and scope in the backup service or the phone’s backup settings, and verify that irreplaceable photos and files can be opened somewhere other than the device. Backup coverage varies by service, account, settings and app; do not assume every app’s data is included.

If the display or touch input no longer works, do not assume your data is unrecoverable. Look up official broken-screen backup or alternate-input instructions for your exact make and model before sending the phone in. Samsung documents an external-display and input-device backup route for some Galaxy devices, but it is not available for every model or situation.
Protect personal data during service
Use the maker’s repair privacy mode when available
Repair privacy features are specific to the manufacturer, model and software. Google’s Pixel Repair Mode guidance says eligible Pixels need Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later and at least 2 GB of free space. Repair Mode starts a clean Android environment on a dedicated secure partition, with limited functions for diagnostics.

Samsung’s Maintenance mode guidance says Galaxy devices running One UI 5 or later can create a separate account for service and hide personal data such as photos, videos, contacts and messages. Availability and settings can vary by carrier and software version.
Neither mode is a backup or a guarantee that data will be retained. Google says storage-affecting parts replacement can require data deletion even with Repair Mode enabled, and a repair partner decides whether a reset is needed after assessing the repair. Samsung likewise recommends backing up in case the device must be reset or its storage replaced.

Keep your unlock credentials private
Google explicitly advises owners not to share a lock-screen PIN, password or pattern with the technician. Use the supported repair mode rather than handing over your credentials where possible.
Prepare the phone for a service provider
- Check repair instructions for your exact device. Google’s Pixel preparation guidance says to back up and remove the SIM before sending a Pixel for repair. It says to factory reset the phone if Repair Mode is unavailable or not used. Follow the maker’s and provider’s directions for other devices.
- Ask what to remove or leave with the phone. Remove a physical SIM when instructed. Ask how the provider wants you to handle an eSIM, memory card, case and accessories for this service route.
- Check coverage and obtain a clear estimate. Google notes that service options depend on device, warranty status and location. Its repair options guidance recommends asking about appointment availability, repair time, diagnostic cost and the warranty on new parts and service. Confirm the exact model and damage are covered, and get approval before added work or cost.
- Use the privacy mode before the display becomes unusable, if practical. If the screen still responds and the device qualifies, enable its maker-supported mode and follow any provider-specific preparation steps.
Choose between a qualified repair and DIY

If you plan to replace the screen yourself
Use an exact-model procedure and parts
Find an illustrated guide for the precise phone model. Check whether the procedure replaces only the glass, the display, or a complete screen assembly or frame; these are different repairs. Obtain compatible parts and adhesive for that model rather than assuming a generic screen or toolkit will fit.

For example, an iFixit Galaxy S21 guide lists tweezers, a Phillips #00 screwdriver, opening picks, an iOpener, a suction handle, a spudger, high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, plastic cards, a replacement screen and replacement adhesive. Treat that as the guide’s equipment list, not a universal Android kit.
Reduce battery and glass hazards
Power the phone off, follow the battery instructions in the exact-model guide, disconnect cables as directed and protect your hands and eyes from broken glass. Samsung recommends appropriate protective equipment, including goggles and cut-resistant ESD-safe gloves, and warns that broken glass can cause injury. Stop if the battery is swollen or the procedure exceeds your tools or experience.

The iFixit Galaxy S23 Ultra screen guide says to bring that model’s battery below 25 percent, unplug cables and completely power down before starting; it warns that a damaged charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire. That threshold and procedure are specific to the S23 Ultra guide, not a rule for every Android phone.

Account for water resistance after reassembly
Opening and resealing a phone can affect water resistance. The cited Galaxy S21 repair guide says water resistance depends on adhesive reapplication and that the phone will lose its IP rating after the described repair. This is specific to that model and procedure; ask a service provider what it warrants for your phone.

Check the instructions for your exact phone
The requirements above are not universal Android rules. Confirm current eligibility, service availability, terms and parts compatibility with your device maker or repair provider. Google’s Repair Mode criteria apply to eligible Pixel phones; Samsung’s Maintenance mode guidance applies to supported Galaxy devices. Repair instructions and safety steps also differ by model and region.
