Once your website is live, the work shifts from building it to keeping it useful. Pages, business details, software, and integrations can change after launch, so a one-time check cannot guarantee that everything will keep working. You do not need to redesign constantly: a simple, risk-based review can catch problems and guide purposeful improvements.
Why a live website still needs attention
A launch review captures the site at one moment. Later changes—to a page, a form, a connected service, or the site’s underlying components—can introduce issues that were not present at launch. Aperion describes this as a reason to monitor a site over time, though its article is a vendor’s account of its own monitoring platform, not independent evidence of product effectiveness. Maintenance is broader than adding fresh copy. Examples described by service providers include checking availability, testing forms and links, handling technical updates and backups, addressing security work, and making small content changes. These are possible areas of responsibility, not a universal checklist or prescribed schedule. Webest Riviera’s maintenance scope and Matthew Temple Consulting’s care-plan scope illustrate how services can differ.

Pages and business details
Check the pages visitors rely on to understand what you offer and what to do next. Confirm that contact details, opening hours, prices or service descriptions, and calls to action still match the business. Prioritize information that could mislead a visitor or prevent them from reaching you.

Forms and important links
Submit key forms as a visitor would, and confirm that the expected confirmation or follow-up works. Follow important links, especially those that support enquiries, bookings, or other essential tasks. Testing matters because a page can look correct while a form or destination no longer works.
Accessibility after changes
When you change content or an interface, review the accessibility criteria relevant to that change. WCAG organizes its criteria around four principles: content should be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation on 5 October 2023 and adds nine success criteria compared with WCAG 2.1. W3C’s WCAG 2.2 overview and WCAG overview explain the standard and its scope. Automated checks can help identify some issues, but they are not proof that a site conforms; relevant manual review and, where appropriate, specialist evaluation still matter.
Technical components, backups, and availability
Make responsibility for technical updates and backups explicit, including who would handle restoration if something went wrong. If downtime would materially disrupt your organization, include availability monitoring in the process. The exact technical work depends on how the site is built and what it relies on; the examples above do not establish a universal security, backup, or monitoring procedure.

Set a review rhythm that fits the site
There is no established one-size-fits-all interval for website maintenance. Set review frequency according to how quickly the organization changes, the site’s complexity, the consequences of an error, and how quickly you need to detect a problem. A site with frequently changing information or critical forms may call for closer attention than a simple site that changes rarely. Review relevant parts after significant updates, too, rather than waiting for the next routine check.
Keep the process manageable: name an owner, identify the pages and functions that matter most, and record what was checked and what needs follow-up. The purpose is not to create activity for its own sake, but to make sure important visitor journeys continue to work.
Decide who owns ongoing work
Self-maintenance, a contractor, and a care plan are different operating models, not interchangeable guarantees. Choose based on your team’s time and technical skills, the site’s complexity, and the monitoring and support you need.

- Use a contractor when you need specific expertise or occasional help, and can coordinate work as needs arise.
- Consider a care plan when recurring responsibilities and access to support are valuable. Confirm the actual scope rather than assuming every plan includes the same work.
Before relying on outside support, ask who handles routine updates, backups and restoration, uptime and form checks, accessibility review, incident response, and small content edits. Also clarify which platform the provider supports, what response expectations apply, and which tasks are excluded. Service-provider descriptions show why these details need to be checked: scope varies, and a provider’s own claims do not establish what another service offers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImprove with purpose, not by redesigning on a timer
A website can improve through small, targeted changes as well as a major redesign. Use recurring checks to identify friction, outdated information, or a broken task; then prioritize changes that support visitor needs and business goals. Neither the evidence cited here nor a maintenance checklist establishes a guaranteed search-ranking benefit or financial return from a particular update. Treat maintenance as operating the site responsibly, and redesign when the scale of the problem or opportunity calls for it.
