If you suspect someone has gained unauthorized access to a WatchGuard Firebox, treat it as a security incident—not just a device problem. Bring in your incident-response lead or a qualified responder, consider the effect on critical services before isolating or rebooting the firewall, preserve available evidence, and restrict exposed management access in a coordinated way.
Then identify the Firebox model, Fireware version, management mode, and suspected activity. Use the current WatchGuard security advisory that matches the incident; rotate locally stored secrets and any reused copies; and follow the applicable recovery procedure. A factory-default reset alone does not establish that an incident is contained or fully investigated.

What should you do first?
- Start your incident-response process. Notify the person or team responsible for security decisions. If you do not have the expertise in-house, consider a qualified network-security incident-response or forensic provider.
- Assess the service impact before containment. A production Firebox may be providing essential connectivity. The incident lead should weigh the risk of leaving it connected against the consequences of isolation, and plan continuity before making disruptive changes.
- Keep a timeline. Record the symptoms, alerts, relevant management logins, policy changes, reboots, decisions, and response actions, with times and the names of the people involved.
- Coordinate management-access restrictions. Review who can reach Firebox management interfaces and restrict unnecessary exposure as part of the response plan. WatchGuard’s Best Practices to Secure Your Firebox advises against unrestricted management access from the Internet. Avoid making uncoordinated changes that could destroy evidence or interrupt critical services.
What evidence should you preserve?
Collect the available logs before rebooting, resetting, or rebuilding where feasible. WatchGuard says Firebox log messages can help with forensic analysis after an attack. Depending on your setup, relevant records may be held in WatchGuard Cloud, Dimension, WSM Log Server, or an external syslog server; collect from the destinations you actually use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Export or otherwise preserve relevant log data, noting its source and collection time.
- Secure copies against alteration and limit access to people handling the incident.
- Preserve relevant configuration and other incident artifacts through your organization’s approved process.
- Handle backup images and configuration files as sensitive material: they may contain secrets, so store them securely and do not assume they are safe to restore.
WatchGuard’s reset instructions warn that a reset deletes saved backup images on the Firebox and recommend exporting a recent backup image beforehand. Treat that as an evidence-preservation warning, not a recommendation to restore the image during incident recovery.

How should you check whether the activity matches a known advisory?
Identify the affected Firebox model, Fireware version, management mode, exposed services, and relevant VPN configuration. Compare those details and the observed activity with WatchGuard’s current security advisories and follow the remediation for the advisory that actually applies.
For example, WatchGuard advisory WGSA-2025-00027 concerns observed exploitation of an iked vulnerability. It describes two forms of post-exploit configuration or user-database exfiltration and gives indicators for devices that lack the stated resolution. Those indicators are specific to that advisory: an IP address or log behavior listed there is not a universal compromise test, and a match or non-match should be interpreted within the advisory’s scope.
Which credentials and secrets should you change?
WatchGuard recommends rotating all locally stored secrets when unauthorized access is suspected. Change secrets on the affected Firebox and replace any reused values wherever else they appear. Depending on the appliance’s configuration, WatchGuard’s Cyclops Blink remediation guidance identifies:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Management credentials and Firebox-DB user credentials
- Imported certificates and their private keys
- VPN pre-shared keys
- Log-server keys
- Dynamic DNS credentials
- SNMP secrets
- RADIUS shared secrets
Review the actual configuration for other locally stored secrets. Use unique replacement values and coordinate the changes with administrators and dependent services so you do not unexpectedly lock out staff or disrupt VPN tunnels and integrations.

Is a factory reset enough?
No. WatchGuard’s reset documentation describes a return to factory defaults and warns that saved backup images on the appliance are deleted. That describes what the reset does to the device; it does not show that the cause of a compromise has been found, that exposed secrets have been replaced elsewhere, or that other systems on the network are clear.
The required recovery depends on the suspected incident, the applicable advisory, and the model and software involved. Do not choose a reset, recovery mode, firmware reinstallation, or configuration rebuild based only on generic advice. Follow the current incident-specific remediation and consult WatchGuard support or an incident responder when needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you recover and check the wider network?
Use the applicable WatchGuard procedure to restore service, and validate the recovered device before returning it to normal operation. Check that management exposure is appropriate, credentials have been changed, software status and policies are as intended, and logging is working.
For Cyclops Blink, WatchGuard’s remediation calls for a clean rebuild, changing secrets, and investigating the network; it instructs affected owners not to restore old backup or configuration material during that remediation. That direction applies to the Cyclops Blink case, not automatically to every suspected Firebox compromise. Use the guidance for the incident you are handling.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
WatchGuard recommends forensic investigation of the network in its Cyclops Blink guidance. Review relevant activity beyond the firewall, using available logs and other evidence to investigate whether connected systems or accounts were affected. Continue monitoring for recurrence after recovery.
How do you decide whether to isolate, rebuild, or investigate further?
There is no single recovery path established for every suspected compromise. Make the decision with the incident lead or responder using the circumstances of the incident, including:
- Whether there is evidence of successful exploitation or only an unconfirmed attempt
- Which advisory applies to the Fireware version and observed activity
- The device’s model, management mode, and model-specific recovery procedure
- The operational cost of isolation compared with the risk of continued connectivity
- What evidence needs to be collected before a reboot, reset, or rebuild
Keep the decision and its rationale in the incident timeline. The available WatchGuard guidance supports incident-specific remediation and a clean rebuild for Cyclops Blink; it does not define a universal decision tree for all Firebox incidents.

Do legal or notification duties apply?
Possibly, but duties to notify regulators, customers, insurers, or law enforcement depend on factors such as jurisdiction, the data involved, contracts, and the organization’s circumstances. Use your established incident process and consult counsel; there is no single deadline or notification rule that can be determined from the Firebox facts alone.
