Also check that the PC has Bluetooth, the slot is free, and nearby Wii or Wii U consoles are off.
How to pair a Wii Remote with a PC in Dolphin
These steps apply when you want to use a physical Wii Remote with Dolphin Emulator. Dolphin’s controller configuration guide warns against pairing through the computer’s native Bluetooth settings because the operating system may interfere with the connection.

- Choose the real-remote mode. In Dolphin, open Options → Controller Settings. Under Wii Controllers, select Real Wii Remote for the slot you want to use. Confirm that another remote has not already claimed that slot.
- Start discovery in Dolphin. Open the controller configuration for that slot and click Refresh.
- Put the remote into pairing mode. Press 1 + 2 together on an ordinary Wii Remote. For a -TR model, press the remote’s Sync button instead.
- Wait for Dolphin to connect. Keep the game or configuration window open while pairing. If you enable Continuous Scanning, Dolphin can connect to the remote without requiring you to click Refresh each time.
Dolphin’s controller guide documents support for up to four Wii Remotes. For a slot that will not connect, first verify that it is set to Real Wii Remote and is not already occupied.
Check Bluetooth and remove common pairing obstacles
Make sure the PC has a Bluetooth radio
Wii Remotes connect over Bluetooth. Some desktop PCs do not include a Bluetooth radio; Dolphin notes that they may need a USB Bluetooth adapter or a Wi-Fi card that also provides Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is already available, try the Dolphin setup before buying hardware. An adapter is not a guaranteed fix: results vary by model and by connection mode.

Turn off nearby Nintendo consoles
Switch off nearby Wii or Wii U consoles while pairing. Dolphin lists an active nearby console as a possible source of connection trouble.
Do not pair in the operating system first
For Dolphin use, initiate pairing from Dolphin’s controller window. The project’s “Configuring controllers” documentation specifically says not to pair the Wii Remote through the computer’s native Bluetooth settings.

If the remote connects and later seems to disconnect
A Wii game may treat a remote as disconnected after several minutes of inactivity even when the remote is still on and connected to Dolphin. Try one of these reconnection options:

- Use the remote’s configured connection hotkey. Dolphin lists Alt-F5 as the Windows default for Wii Remote 1.
- Press a button on the remote.
Dolphin says it does not automatically turn off Wii Remotes as a Wii console does, except on Linux. To turn one off manually, hold its power button for about a second.

What to try when a Wii Remote still won’t connect to Dolphin
Consider the operating system and other running software
Dolphin’s September 16, 2025 Release 2509 report describes Wii Remote connections as generally working well on Linux, more sporadic on Windows, and difficult to pair on macOS because Apple’s Bluetooth stack does not handle Nintendo’s non-standard PIN codes well. It also notes that other host software—particularly Steam on Windows—can disrupt communication. These are project-level observations, not proof of what is wrong with a particular PC. If Steam is running, close it temporarily and try pairing again.
Understand the passthrough option before changing modes
Bluetooth passthrough lets Dolphin control a compatible Bluetooth adapter directly instead of relying on the host Bluetooth stack. It may improve Wii Remote behavior, but it is a different setup with significant limitations. Dolphin’s Bluetooth Passthrough documentation says adapter behavior varies substantially; its account of about 12 adapters tested by several users, with three failing altogether and two having serious issues, is not a controlled benchmark of all current adapters. The project says, “The only guarantee is that the Wii Bluetooth Adapter will provide the absolute best experience.”

- The adapter controlled by Dolphin cannot be used for other Bluetooth devices at the same time.
- Save states are unavailable in passthrough mode.
- The DolphinBar does not expose its Bluetooth adapter for passthrough.
Dolphin’s Release 2509 report says that release added Realtek firmware loading for passthrough, enabling previously unsupported RTL8761-based adapters; it specifically mentions the TP-Link Bluetooth 5.3 Nano and Asus USB-BT500. That release-specific support does not establish that either adapter works with every PC, Dolphin mode, or configuration.
Know when an alternative accessory is relevant
The Mayflash DolphinBar is a separate accessory, not a passthrough adapter. Its instruction manual describes an integrated Bluetooth receiver, Wii Remote Plus support, up to four controllers, and Dolphin support. It may suit an applicable non-passthrough setup, but Dolphin explicitly says the DolphinBar cannot be used for Bluetooth passthrough.
