Stay out until fire officials say the area is safe. A lithium-ion battery can reignite after it appears extinguished, and heat-damaged battery products may still pose fire, electrical, and toxic-gas hazards. Do not touch or move them. Only after officials clear the space and the battery hazard is assessed should you consider household smoke and ash cleanup, ventilation, or waste handling.
What to do first: follow emergency and re-entry instructions
If you see renewed smoke, hear popping or hissing, notice unusual heat, or observe gas venting, leave and contact emergency services. The U.S. Fire Administration warns that lithium-ion batteries can reignite after extinguishment; cracking, bulging, popping or hissing, venting gas, and rising temperature are warning signs. Do not try to extinguish or smother a smoking battery yourself. California’s post-wildfire guidance says to leave and call 911; follow local officials’ directions rather than applying a distance instruction from another incident context.

Do not enter an uncleared enclosed space just to open windows. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) warns that explosive gases can accumulate where battery products are present, including garages, basements, sheds, and closets. Follow fire officials’ instructions about when and how to air out the space.

Do not touch or move products containing lithium-ion batteries that may have been damaged or exposed to high heat. For an electric or hybrid vehicle, CDPH says not to start, move, tow, or charge it if it was near a fire; a professional should inspect it. Do not start or use a home energy-storage system that was near a fire. Follow county return-home guidance and ask incident officials, the manufacturer, or your local hazardous-waste program for directions specific to a potentially damaged battery.

Decide whether household cleanup is appropriate
Start with local fire and health department guidance. Post-fire ash advice is for residue on household surfaces; it is not a technical protocol for dismantling, moving, or cleaning damaged battery cells or battery debris. It also does not establish that a structure is stable or that unknown chemicals or asbestos are safe to handle.
Limited visible ash
Washington State Department of Health (DOH) describes limited do-it-yourself cleanup for cases where floors and surfaces are mostly visible and only a small amount of ash is present. Its listed protective equipment includes shoes or booties, disposable gloves, coveralls, and an N95, N100, or P100 respirator. DOH specifically cautions that an N95 does not adequately protect against asbestos.
Ash over most surfaces or uncertain contamination
If visible ash covers most surfaces, DOH advises extra precautions and suggests considering a professional contractor. Do not treat protective equipment for light ash cleanup as permission to handle charred battery debris, unidentified substances, or areas with an unresolved battery hazard.

How to clean limited indoor smoke and ash residue
Once re-entry is approved and the battery hazard has been assessed, use damp, low-disturbance methods for the limited ash conditions above:
- Damp-wipe indoor surfaces, including walls, with mild detergent.
- Mop hard floors with mild detergent and water; do not sweep ash with a broom.
- Wash soft items that can be cleaned. Thoroughly vacuum affected furniture, drapes, and carpets with a HEPA-type vacuum.
- Discard porous items that are heavily contaminated and cannot be cleaned easily.
After visible ash is removed, DOH recommends running a portable air cleaner with both HEPA and carbon filters at its highest setting and replacing its filters after cleanup. Continued operation can help remove lingering particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This is an exposure-reduction step, not a way to neutralize battery gases or make an uncleared building safe, and it does not replace professional remediation for substantial contamination.
When and how to ventilate, and what to check in the HVAC system
Keep windows closed until outdoor cleanup is finished and outdoor air quality has improved. When air quality is good and there is no wind, DOH advises opening windows. Conditions at an incident can change, so follow current local air-quality information and fire-authority instructions.

Do not put lithium-ion batteries or devices containing them in household garbage or municipal recycling bins. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that damage during collection or processing can create a fire hazard. Batteries damaged by fire need case-specific handling direction: do not touch or transport one that may still be hazardous, and contact incident officials, the manufacturer, or the local hazardous-waste program.
For an ordinary, undamaged used household battery at the end of its life, use a separate battery-recycling or household hazardous-waste collection point. Do not apply routine preparation advice such as taping terminals or bagging individual batteries to a battery that may have been burned or heat-damaged.

EPA reported that more than 240 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries occurred at 64 waste-management facilities between 2013 and 2020. This is a historical finding from its analysis of publicly available news sources, not a current annual count.
Why battery-fire smoke deserves caution
Lithium-ion battery fires can release hazardous gases. In an EPA update about cleanup at the Moss Landing facility on September 8, 2026, EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Mike Martucci said: “Lithium-ion battery fires can produce hydrogen fluoride and other flammable or toxic gases.” That general hazard statement does not measure exposure in a particular home; rely on incident officials for site-specific safety and re-entry decisions.
