1. Read the breach notice and identify what was exposed
Look for the organization involved, the kinds of information exposed, when the incident happened (if stated), and any steps or deadlines the organization offers. A password breach calls for immediate account changes; exposed Social Security or other identity information makes credit-file checks and protection especially relevant.

If anything is unclear, contact the organization using contact details you find independently on its official website or on a statement—not a link or phone number in an unexpected message. Fraudsters sometimes use breach news to send convincing phishing messages. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends using IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for guidance tailored to the exposed information.
2. Secure exposed passwords and accounts
If a password may have been exposed, change it on the legitimate service immediately. Make the replacement unique, and change it on every other service where you reused the old password. Reuse can let someone who obtained one credential try it on other accounts.

If the notice or account activity suggests someone accessed an account, use the provider’s official recovery process. Sign out other active sessions and turn on two-factor authentication where available. The FTC’s account-security guidance is at How To Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams.
3. Enroll in relevant services offered by the affected organization
If the organization offers complimentary credit monitoring or identity theft insurance, the FTC advises taking advantage of it. Read the offer’s terms: determine what it covers, how long it lasts, and how to enroll before any stated deadline. Monitoring may help identify certain activity, but it does not prevent identity theft or replace checking accounts, credit reports, and suspected misuse.

4. Check accounts, statements, and credit reports
Review bank and card statements for charges or withdrawals you do not recognize, and look for unfamiliar accounts or credit inquiries. If Social Security or other identity information was exposed, check your credit reports for accounts and inquiries you did not initiate. The FTC says free credit reports are available weekly through AnnualCreditReport.com.

You can use a freeze and a fraud alert together. The FTC says a freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, is available to anyone, and stays in place until removed. It is not necessary to buy a paid credit lock to use the free freeze and alert protections. See the FTC’s current instructions for credit freezes and fraud alerts.
5. If you find fraud, contact the affected company and report it
For an unfamiliar transaction or account, contact the bank, card issuer, or other company’s fraud department through a trusted channel, such as the number on your card or the company’s official website. Ask what to do about the affected account; this may include closing or freezing it and changing its credentials.

If someone is using your identity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The site creates a personal recovery plan and explains the steps to take. If the misuse involves a specific account, report it to that provider as well.
6. Keep records and continue checking for misuse
Save the breach notice, correspondence with the organization and financial institutions, case numbers, and details of disputed transactions. Keep reviewing statements and credit files over time: a credit freeze is aimed at new-credit access and does not stop misuse of existing accounts.
