Start by identifying where the failure happens: Chrome may not start, one Google page may fail to load, Drive files may not open or update, or Google may reject your sign-in. Test another website and, if possible, another browser. Those checks help separate a Windows or network problem from a Chrome, Google service, or account issue.
First, identify what is failing
Note whether the problem affects one Google service, several Google services, or unrelated websites as well. Check that the address is correct and reload once. If unrelated sites also fail, check Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether other devices can reach the internet. For Drive, trying another network can help distinguish a local connection problem from a browser issue.
- Chrome will not start: use the startup checks below.
- Chrome starts, but a Google page does not load: test Incognito and another browser.
- Drive files will not open or changes do not appear: check Drive’s browser requirements and offline settings.
- Google keeps asking you to sign in or rejects access: use the account sign-in troubleshooter rather than assuming Windows networking is the cause.
- Several sites fail: investigate the connection before changing Google app settings.
A Drive message such as “Temporary Error (502)” can be a temporary service problem. Wait and retry, and check Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard for a reported outage.
If Chrome will not open
- Open Windows Task Manager and check whether Chrome is already running in the background. If it is stuck, end the Chrome task and try opening the browser again.
- Restart the computer, then launch Chrome.
- Check whether antivirus or other security software has blocked Chrome. If you change a security setting, do so cautiously and restore protection afterward.
- If Chrome still will not start, follow Google’s Chrome crash or startup troubleshooting; reinstalling Chrome is a later step in that guidance.
If Chrome opens but a page fails, try that same page in another browser. If it works there, a Chrome-specific profile, extension, or hardware-acceleration issue is more plausible. If it fails in both browsers, focus on the network, the Google service, or local security software.

If a Google page will not load in Chrome
- Update Chrome and restart it, then reload the page. Google’s connection and loading error guidance covers common page-loading problems.
- Open the same page in an Incognito window. If it works there, an extension or saved browser state may be interfering.
- If Incognito works, disable extensions and turn them back on one at a time, testing the page after each change. This helps identify an extension that blocks or alters the site.
- If the page still fails, clear browsing data and retry. Be aware that removing cookies can sign you out of sites.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is blocking the connection. Close unused tabs or other applications if the computer is low on available memory.
- Consider resetting Chrome settings only after these checks. Google’s reset returns selected settings to their defaults, including items such as the search engine, homepage and startup settings, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Google says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed by this reset. See Reset Chrome settings to default.
If Drive files will not open or changes do not sync
These checks apply to Google Drive in a web browser. They do not establish a fix for Chrome Sync or the separate Drive for desktop application.
- Confirm that the internet connection is working. If Drive shows “Trying to connect,” test another site and, if possible, another network.
- Check that you are using a supported browser and operating system, and that cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies, then reopen Drive and try the file again.
- If you need to work without a reliable connection, use Drive offline access if it is configured. Google says offline access allows viewing and editing and syncs changes when internet access returns.
- If offline access is already on but files still will not open, Google suggests turning the setting to sync and edit offline off and on again. Follow the instructions in Use Google Drive files offline.
- If the issue continues, check whether a virus scanner, ad blocker, firewall, or proxy is interfering with Workspace access. Avoid disabling security protections broadly; use your administrator or security software’s guidance to make a narrow check.
If Google sign-in fails or repeats
When Google rejects access or repeatedly asks you to sign in, choose the issue that matches your case in Google’s “Can’t sign in to your Google Account” troubleshooter. It provides paths for forgotten usernames or passwords, verification challenges, error messages, and work or school accounts. There is no single account fix that applies to all of these cases.

What these steps do not establish
Browser page-loading fixes are not a verified repair for Chrome Sync problems or synchronization in Drive for desktop. If the browser itself works but Chrome Sync or the desktop Drive app is the part that fails, keep that distinction clear and use the dedicated help for that product and account type rather than deleting Chrome profile data as a first response.
