What to Do After a Bank Transfer or Payment App Scam

Contact the provider that moved the money immediately. The right dispute path depends on whether you sent it after deception or someone transferred it without your authority.

If you just sent money to a scammer—or found a transfer you didn’t make—contact the bank, app, or transfer service that moved the money now. Give the transaction details, explain exactly what happened, and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled, reversed, or refunded. Act quickly, but don’t assume recovery is guaranteed.

What to do first

  1. Contact the provider that sent or processed the money. Call your bank or credit union, payment app, wire-transfer company, or card issuer using contact details from its official app, statement, or website. Say the payment is connected to a scam or, if you did not make it, that it is unauthorized. Provide the amount, date, recipient, and transaction or reference number. Ask whether the provider can stop, recall, reverse, or refund it. The FTC recommends contacting the company used to send the money right away, but a reversal is not assured: FTC: What To Do if You Were Scammed.
  2. Describe who initiated the transfer accurately. If you tapped “send” because someone deceived or pressured you, say so; ask what options the provider offers. If another person accessed your account and initiated the transfer without actual authority, report it as an unauthorized transaction. Don’t call a payment unauthorized if you personally initiated it. Those facts can matter when the institution assesses the dispute: CFPB Regulation E guidance.
  3. Save records while you act. Keep the receipt, transaction ID, messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, and screenshots that may help the provider understand what happened. Record when you contacted the provider and any case number or instructions it gives you.
  4. Report the scam to the FTC. File at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. A report helps the FTC track and respond to fraud; filing one does not itself return the money. See the FTC’s scam response guidance.
  5. Secure accounts and information the scammer may have seen. Change any exposed password, including reused versions on other accounts, and enable multifactor authentication or a PIN where available. If you shared your Social Security number, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.

Who to contact depends on how the money moved

Payment route or situation Contact What to ask or report
Bank transfer or bank-sent wire you were tricked into making Sending bank or credit union Report a scam-related transfer and ask whether it can be reversed or refunded. A transfer you authorized after deception is not automatically the same as an unauthorized electronic transfer under Regulation E. FTC; CFPB.
Wire sent through a money-transfer company, such as Western Union, MoneyGram, or Ria The transfer company Report the fraudulent transfer immediately and request a reversal or refund. Options and contact procedures depend on the company. FTC.
Payment app transfer you personally sent to a scammer The app Report it through the app or its official support channel and ask whether the payment can be reversed or refunded. App payments can be difficult to recover. FTC; FTC mobile payment app guidance.
App payment funded by a linked debit or credit card The app and the card issuer or bank Report the app payment to the app; separately ask the issuer or bank about disputing the linked card charge. The app transfer and the funding-account charge are distinct transactions. FTC mobile payment app guidance.
Transfer initiated by someone who accessed your account without authority Your bank or credit union and any relevant app or payment provider Report it as unauthorized, explain how access may have occurred, and give prompt notice. Certain fraudster-initiated peer-to-peer transfers and transfers made with fraudulently obtained credentials can meet Regulation E’s definition, depending on the facts. CFPB Regulation E guidance.

Why it matters whether you sent the money

Under CFPB guidance, an unauthorized electronic fund transfer is generally one initiated by someone other than the consumer, without actual authority, from which the consumer receives no benefit. A fraudster who takes over an account and sends money may fit that definition; a payment the consumer personally initiated after being deceived is a different set of facts. Don’t guess which legal category applies to your case. Tell the provider exactly what happened and ask it to assess the dispute under the applicable rules. The CFPB’s guidance concerns U.S. consumer accounts and electronic fund transfers; it does not establish a blanket reimbursement rule for every app payment or scam.

What to expect when disputing an unauthorized electronic transfer

For unauthorized transactions covered by the rules, CFPB consumer guidance says the bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate. If it determines an error occurred, it must correct the error within one business day and report its findings within three business days. These are error-resolution timeframes, not a promise that every scam payment qualifies as an error or will be reimbursed. The CFPB consumer answer stating these timeframes was last reviewed August 28, 2026: CFPB: What is an electronic fund transfer?.

Watch for a second scam

After a loss, someone may contact you claiming to be law enforcement, a government agency, an attorney, a nonprofit, or a recovery specialist who can retrieve your money for a fee. Don’t pay upfront, share financial or personal information, or trust caller ID or contact details supplied by an unexpected caller. Independently look up the organization’s official contact information. The FTC warns that legitimate government agencies and organizations do not charge to obtain a refund or guarantee that you will recover funds: FTC: Refund and Recovery Scams.

What reported losses say—and don’t say

In a July 22, 2026 alert, the FTC said that in 2025 people reported more than $4 billion in losses to scams paid by bank transfers and cryptocurrency combined. That figure is not a bank-transfer-only total and does not predict whether a particular payment can be recovered: FTC: A way to spot scams—how someone asks you to pay.
