One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most homes that simply need more wired connections, an unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch with enough ports is the straightforward choice. Choose a managed switch for features such as VLANs or traffic controls, PoE if compatible devices should receive power through their network cables, or 2.5G when the connected devices and the links between them can use more than 1 Gbps.
A switch adds local wired ports; your router still connects the home network to the internet. Buying a faster switch alone will not raise your internet-plan speed.

What does an Ethernet switch do?
A switch connects wired devices on your local network, such as computers, televisions, game consoles, access points, and storage devices. One connection links the switch to your router or another upstream network device; the other ports connect endpoints. The router remains responsible for connecting your home network to the wider network.

How many ports should you buy?
Count the wired devices you expect to connect, then include the port used for the link back to the router or upstream device. Leave some room for likely additions so you do not immediately need another switch.
Switches are commonly offered in sizes such as 5, 8, 16, and 24 ports, but there is no universal right size for a home. For examples of catalog listings, TP-Link’s US catalog includes a 5-port Gigabit TL-SG105 and an 8-port 2.5G TL-SG108-M2: TP-Link unmanaged switches. Treat these as product examples, not tested recommendations; check the current listing, hardware revision, and availability before buying.

Do you need a managed switch?
If you only need more wired ports and do not plan to configure network behavior, an unmanaged switch is usually the simplest option. NETGEAR describes unmanaged switches as easy to set up for straightforward connectivity, including in a home office. Its Smart Managed Plus category adds controls such as VLANs, quality of service (QoS), and traffic monitoring: NETGEAR’s guide to managed and unmanaged switches (last updated August 19, 2026).
- Choose unmanaged when plug-and-play connectivity is all you need.
- Consider managed features if you need to separate devices into VLANs, prioritize certain traffic with QoS, or monitor network activity.
More configuration is useful only if you have a reason to use it. Do not pay for advanced controls just because they appear on a higher-tier product.

- 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Expand your network with 8 high-speed ethernet ports for enhanced connectivity and performance
- Easy Smart Management: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface or free software
- Support VLAN: Segment traffic with up to 32 VLANs simultaneously out of 4K VLAN IDs for better security
- Network Monitoring: Monitor your network effectively with port mirroring, loop prevention, and cable diagnostics
- IGMP Snooping: Enhances multicast application performance for improved network efficiency
Is Gigabit enough, or should you buy 2.5G?
Gigabit is suitable for many ordinary wired home devices. A 2.5G switch is worth considering when devices such as a Wi-Fi access point, NAS, or workstation have multi-gigabit ports and faster local transfers or network links would be useful.
The whole path must support the faster rate: a 2.5G switch port does not upgrade a 1G endpoint or a 1G uplink. TP-Link says its cited 2.5G ports can connect to 1G and 100 Mbps devices, and that 2.5G operation is supported over Cat5e cabling. Those are vendor specifications; confirm the capabilities of the particular switch and devices you plan to connect. See TP-Link’s 2.5G overview.

Do you need PoE?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) carries power and network data over the Ethernet cable. It can be useful for compatible access points, cameras, and other devices where a separate power connection is inconvenient. If every connected device has its own power supply, PoE may not be necessary.
Before choosing a PoE switch, check the exact model’s supported PoE standard, which ports supply power, per-port limits, and total power budget. The total budget is shared across devices drawing power at the same time, so add up their expected needs rather than looking only at a single port’s maximum.

Budgets can vary by model and even by power adapter. For example, NETGEAR lists GS108LP/GS108PP budgets of 60 W, 83 W, or 123 W when paired with 67.5 W, 90 W, or 130 W adapters, respectively. For GS116LP/GS116PP, it lists 76 W, 115 W, or 183 W with 90 W, 130 W, or 200 W adapters. These figures apply to those models and configurations only; consult NETGEAR’s model-specific PoE budget guidance and the switch’s current specifications.
As another catalog example, TP-Link lists the TL-SG105PP-M2 with four 2.5G PoE++ ports and a 123 W PoE power budget. It is an example of a particular product configuration, not a general PoE requirement: TP-Link PoE switch catalog.
Where will the switch sit?
Check the exact model’s physical design and mounting options before buying. A switch placed in a quiet room may need to be fanless or explicitly described as silent; a cabinet or rack installation may make ventilation, dimensions, and rack support more important. Manufacturer product listings vary, so do not assume every switch is silent, fanless, or rack-mountable.
Quick Recap
Quick buying checklist
- Count the wired endpoints and the router or upstream connection, with room for likely additions.
- Choose unmanaged Gigabit for straightforward port expansion; pay for management only if you need its controls.
- Choose 2.5G only where connected devices and the full network path can use the added speed.
- For PoE, verify standards, powered ports, per-port limits, and the total budget for simultaneous device loads.
- Check the model’s noise, mounting, and installation details for its intended location.
