Your phone’s operating system and its apps update separately. Check the app’s listing in the App Store or Google Play first, then confirm the phone and app support the release or feature you need. If an update will not install, check the connection and available storage; if just one app is affected, contact its developer.
First identify what is outdated
“Updated” can refer to the phone’s operating system, an individual app, a built-in app, or a feature inside an app. Those are different checks: installing a system update does not confirm that every app has its latest release, and it does not guarantee that a particular feature is available on your device.

- If the notice names an app, check that app’s store listing and version.
- If it names iOS or Android, check the phone’s system software separately.
- If the app is current but a feature is missing, check the app’s stated requirements and whether that feature is available for your device.
Check the app’s update listing
On iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account or photo button.
- Review App Updates and tap Update next to the app if an update is offered.
Downloaded apps update automatically by default, but Apple also provides this manual check. An up-to-date iPhone can still have an app update waiting in the App Store. See Apple’s instructions for updating apps from the App Store.

- Open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & devices, then check Updates available.
- Install an available update for the app.
- To check Android itself, open Settings and look for a system or software update. The exact menu path varies by phone maker.

Confirm the phone and app support the release
An update may not be offered if the phone does not support the required software, or if the app or feature is unavailable for that device. Apple’s system-update guidance says the device must be compatible with the software version. For an Android app, Google Play’s listing indicates whether that app is available for the specific device; review the app’s own requirements for the feature you want.
Check the phone model, installed system version, app name and app version when comparing requirements. A store listing that does not offer an update is not, by itself, proof that the app is broken: the release may not support that device. If an update is stuck or will not download
When several apps cannot update, investigate delivery conditions before treating each app as a separate problem.

- Storage: Check free space. Google Play Help says less than 1 GB available can be a possible sign of low storage affecting downloads; it is an indicator, not a universal minimum for every update.
- Restart: Restart the phone and try again.
- Date and time on Android: Check that automatic date and time are enabled.
- System-update delivery: Apple lists network access, storage, device support and update-server access among reasons an iPhone or iPad update may fail.
For a failed iPhone or iPad system update, Apple advises retrying; if the update remains unavailable or fails, its guidance includes deleting the downloaded update and downloading it again, or using a Mac or iTunes in some cases. Follow Apple’s current iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting steps.

Use the scope of the problem to choose what to do next
Only one app is affected
Check that app’s update listing and device compatibility. If the problem continues after the app and phone are updated, contact the app developer. Google Play specifically recommends contacting the developer when troubleshooting an installed app does not resolve the problem.
Several apps are affected
Check the store’s download or update process, internet connection, storage and, on Android, date and time. Multiple stalled downloads make a shared delivery issue more plausible than several unrelated app defects.

The app is current, but a feature is missing
Confirm the feature’s requirements with the app developer and whether it is available on your model and software version. The official guidance does not establish one universal cause for an outdated-feature message, so the app name, phone model, operating-system version, app version and exact notice are useful details when asking for support.
