Does Safely Removing a USB Drive Matter? Write Caching and Data Loss Explained

Ejecting or unmounting a USB drive lets the computer finish pending writes. Here’s what Windows write-caching policies mean and how to remove a drive safely on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Yes. Ejecting or unmounting a USB drive gives your computer a chance to finish pending writes before you unplug it. A copy window disappearing does not always prove every write is complete. The risk is especially clear on Windows when the drive uses the Better performance policy, which may cache writes and requires safe removal.

Why safe removal matters

When you save or copy a file, the operating system may still be completing work after the visible operation appears to finish. Unplugging during that time can mean lost data or a damaged filesystem. Ejecting or unmounting tells the system to finish outstanding work and release the drive before disconnection.

Microsoft advises safely removing external storage to avoid data loss. It describes the purpose of the Windows process this way: “The Safely Remove Hardware process protects the integrity of data on the device by making sure that all cached operations finish.” Microsoft’s removal-policy documentation does not quantify how often unsafe removal causes loss, so no reliable percentage can be given.

Windows: Quick removal versus Better performance

Windows 10 and 11 offer two removal policies for external storage. They affect whether Windows caches disk writes; they are not universal labels for other operating systems. Microsoft says Quick removal has been the default since Windows 10 version 1809. The setting can be changed for an individual device and persists when it is reconnected to the same computer port.

Windows policy Write caching Practical consequence
Quick removal Windows does not cache disk write operations for the device. The device is managed so it remains ready to remove. Microsoft notes there may be a performance cost. Safe ejection remains the clearest general habit; this policy is not a guarantee against data loss.
Better performance Windows may cache writes. Use Safely Remove Hardware so cached operations finish before unplugging. Microsoft says this policy requires safe removal.

These policy descriptions and the version/default detail are from Microsoft’s Manage default media removal policy documentation.

How to safely remove a USB drive in Windows 10 or 11

  1. Finish copying, saving, or otherwise using files on the drive.
  2. Select the taskbar’s Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon, then choose Eject for the drive.
  3. Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification. If the drive remains in the menu, wait until it disappears before unplugging.

Microsoft also documents removal through Settings. The taskbar icon may not appear when no recognized removable device is connected. See Microsoft’s Windows safe-removal instructions.

Mac: eject from Finder

On a Mac, select the drive in Finder and choose File > Eject, click the Eject button beside it, or drag its icon to Trash. Wait for it to disappear from Finder before disconnecting. If it will not eject, an app or another user may still be using files on the drive; close the relevant files or app and try again. Apple lists these methods in its guide to connecting and using storage devices with Mac.

Linux: unmount or eject before disconnecting

On Ubuntu, unmount the USB storage before unplugging it. Ubuntu’s guidance says unmounting waits for data to finish writing or programs to stop using the device; skipping this can cause data loss or filesystem corruption. Use the desktop’s unmount/eject control or an appropriate system tool, and wait for the operation to complete. The Ubuntu USB storage guidance explains the unmount step.
