Before installing drivers, updating BIOS, or choosing accessories, identify your exact XPS 13 model and installed operating system. Dell’s setup instructions differ across generations; the steps documented for the XPS 13 9360 are not a universal guide for newer models.
Use the laptop’s service tag or model information at Dell Support to find the support page for your machine, then follow its instructions for your model and operating system.

1. Finish the first-boot setup
Connect the power adapter and turn on the laptop. Dell’s XPS 13 9360 setup guide says to connect Windows to a network and sign in to or create a Microsoft account. If your XPS 13 runs Ubuntu, follow the on-screen setup instructions instead. These documented steps apply to the 9360 guide; the screens and options on another generation or OS may differ.

Dell’s setup guide also points users to the apps provided with that model, including SupportAssist. Once the initial setup is complete, confirm that the installed OS matches the one selected on your model’s Dell Support page.

2. Check for drivers through Dell
For the XPS 13 9315, Dell’s driver guidance describes using SupportAssist or the Dell Support website to find drivers. When using the website, select the exact model and installed operating system so the results apply to your configuration.
- SupportAssist: Use the Dell application available on your system to check for relevant updates.
- Manual lookup: Select your specific XPS 13 and OS on Dell Support, then use the drivers Dell lists for that configuration.
Do not use a third-party driver download site as a substitute for Dell’s model-specific support. Driver releases and applicable packages can vary by model and OS.

3. Treat a BIOS update as a separate decision
Do not assume a BIOS update is necessary simply because the laptop is new. Check the current instructions and available firmware on the Dell support page for your exact XPS 13 before proceeding. The cited 9315 BIOS guidance says to disconnect external devices and temporarily suspend BitLocker before updating. A Dell search-result excerpt for the 9340 also mentions the BitLocker precaution, but it does not establish a universal procedure for every XPS 13.

- If BitLocker is enabled, have your recovery key available before changing firmware, and follow Dell’s instructions about suspending protection.
- Disconnect external devices if the model-specific instructions call for it.
Firmware guidance can change. Follow the current Dell instructions for your machine rather than applying the 9315 steps to another generation.

4. Create Windows recovery media if useful
Dell’s XPS 13 9360 setup documentation recommends: “Create recovery drive for Windows.” A USB recovery drive can be useful if Windows later needs recovery or reinstallation. Dell’s cited page does not specify a universal USB capacity, so check the current Windows requirements and your model’s support guidance before preparing one. You may be able to use USB storage you already own; a new purchase is not automatically required.

If the laptop shows a hardware fault or a component is not working as expected, use the diagnostics and support route for your exact model rather than guessing at a repair. Dell’s model-specific support resources provide the appropriate starting point for troubleshooting and contacting support. Warranty coverage and terms depend on the device and should be checked through Dell Support.
