PS5 Pro Enhanced is not a third, standardized graphics mode: it identifies games with Pro-specific features, and each developer decides what those features do. Some games offer a hybrid mode that aims to combine visual improvements with a higher frame rate.
What the mode names mean
- Quality or Fidelity: Usually prioritizes rendering quality and effects, such as more extensive ray tracing. Depending on the game, it may target a lower frame rate, often 30 frames per second.
- Performance: Usually prioritizes smoother motion and responsiveness, commonly targeting 60 fps or higher. A game may reduce internal resolution or effects to reach that target, though PS5 Pro can improve image quality while keeping a high frame-rate target.
- PS5 Pro Enhanced: Sony’s label for games with features that use PS5 Pro hardware. It does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, or menu option; Sony says enhancements vary by game. See Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.
- Enhanced, Performance Pro, or Balanced: These are developer-defined labels, not platform-wide presets. Check the individual game’s specifications rather than inferring what a mode does from its name.
Why PS5 Pro can narrow the trade-off
PS5 Pro combines an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology. PSSR reconstructs or upscales an image, which can help a game balance rendering resolution, visual clarity, and frame rate.

In its 2024 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment claimed PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s manufacturer figures, not independent comparative measurements. Sony also said Game Boost could apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games; that figure describes potential coverage, not a promise that every game gets the same improvement. In March 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR rollout for supported games, describing improvements in image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance. The update is optional for supported titles through a system setting. Sony says results vary by game and advises that players can turn it off if they encounter unexpected visual effects. How the trade-off looks in actual games
The Last of Us and Insomniac’s Performance Pro
Sony’s September 2024 developer feature says The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered receive a PS5 Pro-specific mode that renders at 1440p and upscales to 4K with PSSR, targeting 60 fps. Their existing Performance and Fidelity modes remain available; a higher frame rate may be possible if the display supports it.
For Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac’s Performance Pro mode combines Fidelity mode’s 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with Performance mode’s 60 fps target. Insomniac Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald described it as a mode that “marries the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with the speedy 60 frames per second of Performance mode.” These examples show what a hybrid can do, not a recipe every PS5 Pro game follows. Assassin’s Creed Shadows: one game’s published specifications
Sony’s March 6, 2025 specification lists three PS5 Pro modes for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The resolution figures below are described as upscaled to 2160p, not native rendering resolution.

| Mode | Resolution | Frame-rate target | Ray tracing | Display requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 2160p upscaled | 60 fps | Standard | Not stated in Sony’s specification |

Sony defines standard ray tracing in this game as diffuse-light global illumination throughout the world. Extended ray tracing includes that global illumination and reflective surfaces throughout the world. The Balanced row’s original extended-ray-tracing entry was struck through; the final listed specification is standard ray tracing. These definitions and requirements apply to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, not to other games. Sony’s game specification

- Start with what you notice most. Choose Performance if smooth motion and responsiveness matter most; choose Quality or Fidelity if you prefer richer visuals or more extensive effects.
- Look for a Pro-specific or hybrid option. If the game offers Enhanced, Performance Pro, or Balanced, inspect its frame-rate target and effects. The label alone does not tell you whether it favors image quality or speed.
- Compare the actual specifications. Check the target frame rate, whether the stated resolution is native or upscaled, ray tracing and other effects, and any display requirements. Requirements are title-specific; the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Balanced mode, for example, has a high-refresh HDMI 2.1 requirement.
- Try representative gameplay. If the game lets you switch modes, compare motion clarity and image stability while moving, not just a paused scene or still screenshot.
Some titles and features depend on compatible display capabilities, and the exact requirements differ by game. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview describes the platform features; its game-specific documentation explains individual implementations. Sony’s PS5 Pro first look
