What to Check When an AI Robot Struggles With New Objects or Layouts

A robot’s failure on a new object or changed layout can have several causes. Test object grounding, spatial generalization, visual changes, motion, and task transitions separately.

If a robot succeeds in a familiar setup but fails when an object or room arrangement changes, first identify what changed and where the failure happened. A new object category, a new instance of a familiar object, a different layout, altered lighting, moving objects, or a breakdown between task steps are different problems—not evidence of one general limitation. Test them separately, and distinguish recognizing an object from being able to manipulate it.

Start by locating the failure

Watch the robot’s behavior and record the first point at which it goes wrong: interpreting the instruction, identifying a target, choosing an approach, grasping, moving the object, or transitioning to the next task step. A robot can correctly recognize an object and still fail to reach or grasp it. Treat perception and physical execution as separate checks.

For a useful comparison, keep the task and most conditions steady while changing one factor at a time. This approach is a practical way to isolate variables reflected in the benchmarks below; it is not a universal troubleshooting protocol for every robot.

Is the object unfamiliar, or just a new instance?

Check whether the item is a different example of a known category or a category the robot may never have encountered. A new mug with a different shape tests instance generalization; a stuffed whale tests whether the system can ground a less familiar category in the request and current camera image. For example, the MOO paper uses the open-world request “can you get me the pink stuffed whale?” to illustrate this kind of object grounding.

Compare what the robot sees with what it was asked to find. Is the intended object visible? Are similar items or distractors nearby? Does the system select the right target but then fail to grasp it? Those observations help separate a language-to-object identification problem from a manipulation problem.

Research approaches offer possible strategies, not guarantees for a deployed robot. MOO describes using a pretrained vision-language model to extract identifying information from an instruction and image, then conditioning a robot policy on that information. Its authors report zero-shot generalization to novel object categories and environments on a real mobile manipulator. UAD describes distilling task-conditioned affordances from foundation models; its authors report generalization to unseen object instances, categories, and instruction variations using policies learned from as few as 10 demonstrations. Neither result promises that an off-the-shelf robot will handle every new object.

Did the arrangement change while the objects stayed the same?

Hold the objects and instruction constant, then vary positions and relationships: move the target, swap two objects, or place the target in a different relation to a receptacle. This isolates spatial configuration from object recognition. Also check whether the instruction requires combining familiar subtasks in a new order; that tests task composition rather than a simple layout change.

MESA-Bench explicitly evaluates separate suites for unseen spatial configurations, object instances, object categories, and novel compositions of familiar subtasks. That separation is useful when designing a test: if the object, layout, and task all change at once, a failure does not reveal which kind of generalization broke down. MESA’s project documentation is maintained by the project and may evolve.

Did appearance or the surrounding scene change?

Keep the task and arrangement fixed while checking one visual or environmental factor at a time. Relevant changes include the target’s color, texture, size or physical properties; the table surface and background; lighting; camera pose; and the number of distractor objects.

Colosseum is a simulation benchmark covering 20 manipulation tasks and 14 environmental perturbation axes. In the authors’ 2024 report, five state-of-the-art models’ success rates fell by 30–50% across perturbation factors; combining perturbations caused degradation above 75%. The authors identified distractor count, target-object color, and lighting as especially damaging in their experiments. These are results from that benchmark, not expected failure rates for all commercial robots. The authors also report a correlation between simulation and real-world experiments of R² = 0.614.

Does the scene move during execution?

If an object shifts, a person enters the scene, or the robot itself changes the arrangement, check whether the system observes over time and updates its plan. A plan based on a single frame can become stale once the object has moved. Note whether the robot tracks the change, re-identifies the target, and adjusts its approach—or continues toward where the object used to be.

DOMINO studies dynamic manipulation across 35 tasks, five robot embodiments, and more than 110,000 expert trajectories, with tasks ranging from predictable low-order dynamics to stochastic and abrupt motion. Its PUMA method uses historical optical-flow cues and world queries to forecast object-centric future states. The authors report a 6.3-percentage-point absolute success-rate improvement over baselines and transfer benefits from dynamic training to static tasks. These project-reported results do not establish that temporal reasoning is the cause or remedy for every robot failure.

Does the failure happen between steps in a longer task?

For a household sequence such as tidying or setting a table, identify the step that failed and whether the previous skill handed off the right object, state, or goal to the next one. A robot may recognize the first object correctly but lose track of the task after a transition.

Habitat 2.0 combines the ReplicaCAD apartment dataset, a physics-enabled simulator, and the Home Assistant Benchmark, which includes tasks such as tidying, stocking groceries, and setting a table. Meta’s research summary reports that flat reinforcement-learning policies struggled on this benchmark compared with hierarchical policies, while hierarchies of independent skills had hand-off problems; sense-plan-act pipelines were more brittle than RL policies. These are comparisons within that experimental setting, not universal rankings of robot architectures. Meta’s summary also reports simulator throughput exceeding 25,000 simulation steps per second (850× real time) on an 8-GPU node, and 100× speed-ups over prior work.

Build a controlled comparison

  1. Record a baseline. Run the task in the familiar setup and note the instruction, objects, arrangement, camera view, and outcome.
  2. Change one dimension. Try a new instance, a new category, a changed spatial arrangement, a visual or environmental perturbation, or motion—one at a time.
  3. Keep the task otherwise steady. If testing layout, retain the same objects and instruction. If testing object novelty, keep the layout and task as close to the baseline as possible.
  4. Mark the failure point. Record whether it occurred in instruction interpretation, target identification, planning, grasping, execution, or a transition between subtasks.
  5. Repeat and compare. A repeat helps distinguish a consistent weakness from a one-off miss. If multiple changes are necessary to reproduce the failure, record that combination separately rather than attributing it to one factor.

This kind of factor-by-factor test reflects how benchmarks separate generalization dimensions. Colosseum focuses on environmental perturbations, MESA on semantic, spatial, and compositional generalization, and DOMINO on dynamic manipulation. Their tasks and metrics are not interchangeable.

What the benchmark evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Manipulation generalization spans several distinct challenges: object instance, object category, spatial arrangement, visual and environmental change, motion, and long-horizon task structure. A benchmark result can help explain what a research system handled under specified conditions; it does not diagnose a particular deployed robot without a controlled test of that robot.

  • Colosseum’s authors observe: “Unfortunately, a majority of studies evaluate robot performance in environments closely resembling or even identical to the training setup.”
  • Meta’s Habitat 2.0 research summary says: “This benchmark is designed to test generalization to new objects, receptacles, and layouts.”

For readers evaluating research claims, check which dimension was tested, whether the result came from simulation or real-world trials, and whether the task resembles the failure being investigated. A score on new object instances does not by itself establish robustness to a changed layout or moving objects.
