A 5G icon alone does not guarantee an active 5G connection or a particular speed. Work through the checks below before assuming the phone is faulty.
Start with the connection and SIM
- Turn Wi-Fi off for the test. Load a webpage or app with Wi-Fi disabled so you are checking mobile data rather than the home or public Wi-Fi connection.
- Check the cellular toggles. Make sure mobile data is on and airplane mode is off. If your phone has more than one SIM or an eSIM, confirm the intended line is enabled and selected for mobile data. On Pixel, these controls are under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs; wording and location vary by device and software version. Google’s Pixel connectivity instructions describe these settings.
- Check that the line is active on the new phone. Confirm the SIM or eSIM and carrier plan are set up for this device. If you moved from another carrier, check that the phone is unlocked where necessary and that the new carrier supports the exact model.
Check signal, location, and network conditions
With Wi-Fi off, look at the cellular signal and try the same task in another location. If data is slow in one place but works better elsewhere, coverage, a local obstruction, or a local network issue may be involved. Check your carrier’s coverage and outage information; coverage can vary by carrier and by type of 5G service. Google explains that the 5G indicator means the phone is in an area where 5G service is available, not that a specific speed is guaranteed. Google’s Pixel 5G troubleshooting guidance also notes that coverage and speeds vary.

Busy places can also slow service when many people are using the network. Verizon lists high network traffic as one possible cause of slow mobile data. Verizon’s mobile-data troubleshooting guide discusses this and other possible causes.

- If only this phone is slow across several locations, focus on its settings, SIM, model compatibility, and network setup.
- If other phones on the same carrier are slow nearby too, that points toward a possible local network issue, but it is not proof; ask the carrier to check.
Confirm 5G settings and phone compatibility
On a Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and review Preferred network type. Choose 5G if the option is available and supported. Carriers and regions may offer different options, and other phone brands use different menus. A 5G symbol does not by itself show that the phone is connected to 5G at that moment.

Ask the carrier to verify the exact model number, not just the phone’s marketing name. Support for one carrier or one 5G network does not establish compatibility with every other network. Google specifically cautions that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on every 5G network. See Google’s 5G troubleshooting page and its Pixel phone compatibility information.
Check power saving and carrier settings
Battery Saver on Pixel
If you have a Pixel, turn Battery Saver off while testing. Google says Battery Saver turns off 5G. Do not assume the same behavior on another Android phone or an iPhone; check that model’s own guidance. Google’s Pixel guidance covers the setting.

APN and network operator
Pixel SIM settings may include network operator and access point name (APN). APN settings help the carrier establish the connection, but the right values depend on the carrier. Do not copy APN values from an unrelated phone or guess them; ask the carrier for the correct settings and follow its instructions. Google’s Pixel connectivity help explains where these controls may appear.
Reset network settings only after simpler checks
If the basic checks do not help, a network-settings reset is a reasonable next step. On Pixel, the path is Settings → System → Reset options → Reset mobile network settings. Reset behavior and the settings it clears vary by phone, so read the confirmation screen before proceeding. A reset may help with a configuration problem, but it is not guaranteed to fix slow data. Verizon also suggests considering a network-settings reset when one device remains affected across locations: Verizon’s troubleshooting guide.

When to contact the carrier
Contact the carrier if the phone remains slow after these checks, especially if it is slow in multiple locations. Ask the carrier to verify:
- whether there is an outage or a coverage limitation where you are testing;
- whether the exact phone model is supported and correctly provisioned on your line;
- whether the SIM or eSIM and data plan are active and configured correctly; and
- whether it recommends a specific APN or network setting for your device.
Google recommends checking for outages and confirming the plan when earlier troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance provides those next steps.
