To find out whether a Galaxy or iPhone costs less, compare the same storage capacity over the same ownership period—and include the full wireless plan, fees, financing terms, protection you expect to buy, and any eligible discounts. A lower phone price or “free” carrier offer alone does not establish which option is cheaper.
Build the comparison around your ownership period
Choose a period that matches how long you expect to keep the phone, such as 24 or 36 months. Compare equivalent storage capacities and use the same assumptions for both phones: number of lines, data needs, coverage, and whether you will buy unlocked or through a carrier.

For each option, estimate:
Total paid during ownership = net device payments + wireless service + required taxes, fees, and activation costs + protection or repair costs you expect to pay + financing or upgrade add-ons.

Subtract only discounts and trade-in credits for which you qualify. Keep expected resale proceeds in a separate line: they may reduce your eventual net cost, but they are not cash in hand at purchase and depend on the phone’s condition, sale timing, and market demand.

Separate money paid from possible resale proceeds
Use two figures if resale matters: the amount you expect to pay during ownership and a separate estimate of what you might recover by selling the phone. That makes it clear which figure is a bill and which is uncertain future value.
Match the phones and buying paths
Storage affects the price, so do not compare a 256GB Galaxy with a 512GB iPhone and call the difference an ecosystem saving. Also distinguish an unlocked, direct-purchase price from a carrier-connected offer: the latter may require a particular plan, financing arrangement, or trade-in.
As a US price snapshot accessed October 4, 2026, Samsung’s unlocked Galaxy S26 listing showed $799.99 for 256GB and $999.99 for 512GB, with higher former prices displayed. Apple’s US iPhone 17 page listed $899 for 256GB and $1,099 for 512GB when connecting to a carrier later. Prices and promotions can change, and these listings represent different purchasing paths, so verify current prices and eligibility before comparing them.

Audit carrier promotions before counting the savings
A trade-in estimate or advertised maximum is not a guaranteed discount. Check the device condition and model requirements, required plan, financing term, credit schedule, and what happens if you pay off the phone or leave early. A promotion delivered as monthly bill credits may stop before you receive all of them if you do not meet the terms for the full period.
For example, AT&T’s 2026 Galaxy S26 promotion document describes discounts issued over 36 monthly bill credits and requires an eligible device, a qualifying 0% APR 36-month installment plan, and an eligible AT&T unlimited plan. The exact offer and plan terms must be checked at purchase. Do not call the phone cheaper based on the credits without including the required service cost and the no-promotion device price.
AT&T says smartphone installment payments divide the phone cost into 36 monthly payments; its optional $6-per-month Next Up charge does not reduce the outstanding device balance. If you might upgrade or switch before the term ends, include any remaining balance and credits you would forfeit in that scenario.

Check whether an iPhone is unlocked
Apple says an iPhone bought directly from Apple is generally unlocked. An iPhone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon’s device payment program remains locked to that carrier until fully paid. Apple’s listed connectivity discount is unavailable to buyers who connect later or use prepaid service. Treat the unlocked price, carrier-connected price, and related eligibility as separate cases rather than combining their best-looking numbers.

Compare service over the full term
Use the carrier quote for your location and household rather than a generic advertised plan price. Compare the same number of lines, similar data and coverage, and the whole ownership period. Include taxes and surcharges if the quote excludes them, plus activation charges or other required fees.
If a phone discount requires a more expensive plan, calculate the plan difference over the months you must keep it. A device credit can be outweighed by the extra service cost. If you do not yet have a carrier quote, label any estimate with its geography, line count, plan tier, and assumptions; do not present it as a universal price.
Use a side-by-side offer worksheet
Fill in one column for each phone and buying path. Use the same ownership period and storage wherever possible. Write “not stated” for a term the offer does not disclose rather than filling it with an assumption.

Run at least two scenarios
No-trade-in baseline
Compare both phones without trade-in credit or conditional promotional savings. This shows the cost if your current device does not qualify or you prefer to keep it.
Eligible trade-in scenario
Add only the credit you are likely to receive under the offer’s stated conditions. If the offer depends on staying through a credit period, show that term and calculate a separate early-exit case when switching or upgrading is realistic for you.
Protection and repair scenario
Include protection only if you expect to purchase it. Compare the premium and deductible with your own willingness to pay for repairs; the available evidence here does not establish that either phone family has a lower long-term repair rate.

- Net device cost: scheduled device payments minus discounts and trade-in credit you are eligible to receive.
- Service cost: the same number of lines and comparable service for the full period, including taxes and fees where available.
- Flexibility: whether the phone is unlocked, what payoff is required, and whether leaving ends future credits.
- Risk and extras: protection, deductibles, upgrade add-ons, and separately estimated resale proceeds.
There is no established universal winner on total ownership cost. Your plan quote, eligibility, location, line count, fees, service needs, and the time you keep the phone can change the result. The most useful answer is the one produced by your own matched-price worksheet, not a headline device price.
