Before accepting a job, confirm exactly when and where you will work, how much control you have over the arrangement, and whether the agreed terms will be recorded in writing. A policy may describe a process without guaranteeing a particular schedule or remote-work pattern. Check the offer, contract, policy and any referenced handbook together, and identify which country’s employment rules apply.
Start with the written terms, not the “flexible” label
Flexible working can mean a change to hours, schedule or work location; the label alone does not tell you what is on offer. Compare the offer letter, employment contract, flexible-working or remote-work policy, and any handbook or collective agreement they refer to. Ask which document governs if they appear to conflict, and which version of the policy applies to your role.

If you and the employer have agreed a specific pattern, ask for it to be recorded in the contract or another clear written term. The Australian Government’s “Accept a job offer” guidance advises: “You should tell your employer if you need flexible working arrangements before you sign your contract.” Acas says an agreed change usually changes contract terms; the legal effect of any policy or clause depends on the applicable law and the documents themselves.

Check what the arrangement means day to day
Hours, days and availability
Look for the weekly hours, working days, start and finish times, core or overlap hours, and any expectations about overtime or availability outside those hours. If compressed hours or job sharing are relevant, make sure the policy explains how they work for this role. Great Britain’s official guide lists changes to hours, start or finish times, and days as possible flexible-working requests. Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman advises considering whether the work must be done at set times.

Location and office attendance
Check the contractual place of work and whether the role is office-based, hybrid or remote. Find out how many office days are expected, who chooses or changes those days, how much notice you receive, and whether travel to another workplace is part of the role. Clarify which locations are permitted for remote work: a policy may limit work to a particular region or country or specify time-zone requirements. Ireland’s Code recommends stating geographical and jurisdictional scope, including time-zone restrictions. Norway’s labour authority flags location as an issue where a job involves multiple work locations.
How the arrangement fits the job
Ask how the pattern will work with the role’s duties, team interactions, meetings and customer coverage. Some responsibilities may require presence at a particular place or time. Clarify how performance will be assessed under the arrangement, rather than assuming that remote or non-standard hours change the role’s expectations.

Understand how approval and changes work
Before signing, ask who approves flexible-work arrangements, how a request is submitted, whether there is a discussion or appeal process, and when the arrangement can be reviewed. Find out whether either side can change or withdraw it, what reasons may trigger a change, and what notice applies. Acas says a clear policy can help employees and employers understand expectations.

In Great Britain, employees can make a statutory flexible-working request from their first day of employment. An employee may make two requests in any 12-month period, and an employer must decide within two months unless a longer period is agreed. The employer must discuss a statutory request with the employee before refusing it, and must amend the contract if it agrees to the request. These rules concern the request process: they do not guarantee that a particular pattern will be accepted. Employers in Great Britain may refuse a request for a good business reason. Northern Ireland has different rules.

Ask who covers equipment, costs and safety
Confirm who provides and maintains equipment, which expenses or home-working costs can be reimbursed, and how approval and claims work. Ask whether your home setup must meet particular requirements and how health and safety responsibilities are handled. Ireland’s Code calls for clarity on reimbursement arrangements and safety obligations; Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman recommends considering technology solutions when assessing a proposed arrangement.
Identify the applicable legal framework
Flexible-working rights and procedures are not identical across jurisdictions. The official sources relevant here cover Great Britain, Australia, Ireland and Norway; Great Britain’s GOV.UK guidance expressly distinguishes Northern Ireland. The applicable rules may also depend on worker status and on a contract, award or agreement. Confirm where the job is legally based and check the local rules before relying on a statutory entitlement. A right to request a change is not the same as a right to have the requested arrangement approved.

Questions to ask before accepting
- Can the agreed hours, days and work location be written into my offer or contract?
- Which hours or days are fixed, and which can I choose?
- How many office days are expected, who decides them, and how much notice will I receive?
- Can I work remotely from another region or country, and are there time-zone limits?
- Who provides equipment, pays approved expenses and handles health and safety requirements?
- How and when can the arrangement be reviewed or changed, and what notice applies?
- Which policy version applies to my role, and can it be changed unilaterally?
For a direct comparison between two offers, assess schedule control, office and remote-location limits, how clearly the agreed arrangement is written down, the change process, equipment and cost responsibilities, and the governing legal framework.
