Preorder only when a specific benefit—such as a wanted edition, confirmed bonus, or useful preload—outweighs the cost of committing before launch and the limits on changing your mind.
Start by confirming exactly what you are buying
Match the listing to the game and purchase route you intend: title, platform, edition, and storefront. Check whether it is the full game, a bundle, or an upgrade. Similar edition names do not establish that the purchase works across console generations or platforms; rely on the listing’s explicit compatibility details.

Then compare each edition’s total price and itemized contents. Separate playable expansions or other content you actually want from cosmetics, currency, and promotional extras. No particular RPG edition or its value can be assumed without checking its own listing.

Know what “physical” means
Confirm whether the order is digital or physical, and what the physical package actually contains. Nintendo distinguishes digital eShop pre-orders from physical pre-purchases, but that distinction does not establish whether an unnamed game’s box includes a disc, cartridge, download code, or something else. Inspect the specific product description. Nintendo’s overview of pre-orders and pre-purchases explains its own purchase routes.

Read the bonus conditions
For a preorder bonus, confirm the exact item, qualifying edition and platform, eligibility deadline, and delivery method—such as a code or account entitlement. Check whether a purchase after release also qualifies. Nintendo notes that some games offer bonus content for purchases made before release and provides guidance on preorder bonus codes; that is not a promise that every RPG has a bonus. For physical orders, check the delivery plan
Look for the shipping estimate, delivery territory, how a release-date change affects the order, and what happens if payment authorization fails. PlayStation Direct says release dates may change and that cancellation is generally possible until shipping begins, typically around six days before the scheduled release date. That is PlayStation Direct’s stated policy, not a general retailer rule. Check its pre-order information alongside the retailer’s terms.

Find out when you will be charged
Payment timing varies by seller and purchase type. Nintendo’s US support material says payment for a digital eShop pre-order occurs no sooner than seven days before release, while a physical pre-purchase is charged immediately. Those are Nintendo’s stated US terms; do not assume another platform or retailer follows them. Check Nintendo’s current policy or the policy for the store where you plan to order.

Understand cancellation and refunds before downloading
Read the applicable terms before preloading, downloading, or streaming the game: those actions can affect cancellation eligibility. The policies below illustrate why the seller, order type, and country matter; they are not universal rights or legal advice.

- PlayStation Store, US: The cancellation policy for digital pre-orders depends on when payment is taken and whether the main product has started downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads may therefore matter. Read the PlayStation Store cancellation policy.
- Bandai Namco Store: Its FAQ says pre-orders can be canceled until eight days before release. Under its policy, eligible unopened physical items can be returned within 30 days of receipt. Check the Bandai Namco Store FAQ for the terms applicable to your order.
These examples cover specific stores and policies. Confirm the terms shown by your actual seller, for your country and order, and account for any local consumer protections that apply.

If the game is offered in multiple editions or through multiple sellers, compare the details that can change what you receive and how much flexibility you keep:

- Digital or physical format, including what any physical package supplies.
- Bonus contents, eligibility conditions, and deadline.
- When payment is due.
- Cancellation and refund terms.
- Delivery timing, territory, and release-date-change handling.
A higher-priced edition is not automatically better value; judge it by the specific included content you want. No named editions or prices are established here, so there is no universal edition ranking.

A preorder makes the most sense when the listing confirms a benefit you specifically value and the seller’s terms are acceptable. A collector may care about a limited physical edition; another player may want a clearly stated bonus or the option to preload. Against those benefits, weigh paying before reviews are available and the possibility that cancellation will become limited once payment, preload, download, or shipping occurs.
If no confirmed benefit matters to you, waiting for reviews or buying after launch remains an option. Do not assume a digital copy will sell out or that an RPG must be preordered; that would need evidence for the particular game. Recheck the listing and seller policy close to ordering, because product details and terms can vary.
