Start by confirming the game’s platforms and release timing
Availability is specific to each game, and an announcement can change or leave important details unsettled. Check the publisher’s current platform list and release status before buying hardware or preordering. For example, Xbox Wire’s January 22, 2026 announcement listed Fable for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, and PS5 for autumn 2026, and identified it as an Xbox Play Anywhere title: Xbox Wire’s Fable announcement. Sega’s September 2026 announcement listed Persona 6 for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, PS5, Steam, and Switch 2, but said its release date was undecided: Sega’s Persona 6 announcement.

Treat the game’s official page as the source of truth, and distinguish a firm date from a release window or an announcement without a date.

If you have a suitable gaming PC or console, start with the incremental cost of playing on it rather than the price of an entirely new setup. A second version may make sense if it offers something you value—such as portable play, a preferred controller, a specific ecosystem feature, or a better-tested version—but weigh that against buying another device and any service, storage, or accessory costs.

Do not assume that a feature attached to one game or ecosystem applies to every game. Xbox Wire identifies Fable as an Xbox Play Anywhere title; that is a title-specific ownership feature, not a general promise about all Xbox games or competing platforms.
Choose based on where and how you play
PC for desk play and configurable hardware
Before choosing the PC version, compare your actual processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage with the developer’s minimum and recommended requirements for that exact RPG. A PC label alone does not establish that your machine can run the game well. Requirements were not established for an unnamed target game, so check the developer’s current specifications rather than relying on a general PC-versus-console ranking.
PlayStation or Xbox for a console setup
If you mainly play on a TV, compare the versions available for the specific console generation you own. Check edition contents, controls, online requirements, and any cross-save or cross-play support directly on the game’s official listing. Xbox features such as Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud support only matter if the individual game includes them and they fit how you play.

Switch 2 when portability matters
Switch 2 can offer handheld, tabletop, and TV play when the game supports those modes. Nintendo’s listing for RuneScape: Dragonwilds documents all three: Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing. Those are hardware play modes, not proof that every RPG runs or looks equally well in each mode. Verify the exact Switch 2 version, and check compatibility and play experience separately if you use a Switch Lite; Nintendo cautions that they can differ on its listing: Nintendo’s compatibility information.
Check online play, saves, and ownership title by title
Online access, cloud saves, and the ability to move between devices are not platform-wide constants. Nintendo’s RuneScape: Dragonwilds listing associates online play and Save Data Cloud with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. By contrast, Xbox Wire described a specific Towerborne update as changing the game from free-to-play and always-online to a buy-once offline game with online co-op: Xbox Wire’s Towerborne announcement. These examples show why the game’s own listing and current requirements matter more than assumptions about a platform.
- Does the game require an internet connection, or can it be played offline?
- Is online multiplayer included, and does it require a platform subscription?
- Are cross-play, cross-progression, or cloud saves supported on the specific versions you are considering?
- Does ownership include another device or storefront version, or is that benefit limited to a named program such as Xbox Play Anywhere?
Compare version quality and total cost only after narrowing the choices
When a game is confirmed on more than one platform, use reliable testing of that exact game to compare resolution, frame rate, loading, stability, and controls. Do not infer performance from a system’s general reputation or from another game. No matched performance test or current pricing was established for an unnamed RPG.

For a real purchase decision, calculate the cost in your region for the hardware you still need, the game edition, any required online service, and necessary storage or accessories. Compare edition contents as well as price: different versions may not include the same add-ons or bonuses. Prices and subscription requirements can vary by region and change over time, so use current local store listings.

Examples show why a platform list is not enough
Official announcements illustrate how different the choices can be. Bandai Namco announced on August 28, 2026, that Elden Ring Tarnished Edition was available on Switch 2, with new content also purchasable for Elden Ring on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The same announcement said the original Elden Ring had sold more than 30 million units; that figure describes the game’s sales, not which platform is best: Bandai Namco’s announcement.
Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for Switch 2 and Xbox on June 3, 2026, adding those platforms to PS5 and PC availability and naming Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming support: Square Enix’s announcement. Because that announced date has passed, check the current official store listing for availability and regional status rather than treating the announcement as proof that a version is currently purchasable everywhere.
A practical decision order
- Confirm availability: Open the game’s official page and check the exact systems, release status, and date or window.
- Eliminate incompatible options: For PC, compare your hardware with the developer’s requirements. For consoles, verify the exact model and game version.
- Prioritize your play setting: Decide whether you want desk or TV play, or whether handheld and tabletop modes are important.
- Verify game-specific features: Check online play, subscriptions, saves, cross-play, cross-progression, and edition contents on the official listing.
- Compare tested versions: Look for trustworthy testing of the exact RPG before ranking performance or stability.
- Add up the local cost: Include the game edition, hardware you do not own, online service, and any needed storage or accessories.
If two versions meet your needs, the best choice is usually the one that fits your existing setup and preferred way to play, unless verified differences in features, version quality, or total cost make another option more worthwhile.
