Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Treat an AI-generated website design as a draft, not a launch-ready product. Before adopting it, inspect the built pages and complete user journeys for accuracy, usability, accessibility, mobile behavior, working links and forms, privacy and security assumptions, and permission to use every asset. A polished mockup or clean automated scan cannot establish that a real site works for its audience.
Start by defining what you are reviewing
A generated design may be a static mockup, a set of page layouts, or a working site with forms, analytics, embedded media, and other integrations. The checks that matter depend on what you actually plan to publish. Review the implementation—not just a screenshot—and be clear about which pages, languages, devices, services, and user tasks are in scope.

List pages, devices, and essential journeys
Write down the pages people need and what they must be able to do. Depending on the site, essential tasks might include finding contact information, creating an account, submitting an inquiry, making a purchase, or reaching a service. Include the steps from beginning to completion, including confirmation, error, and recovery states where applicable. Note the relevant languages, mobile and desktop layouts, and third-party content or services.

This prevents a common review mistake: treating the homepage as a proxy for the entire site. W3C’s WCAG Evaluation Methodology (WCAG-EM) 2.0 organizes evaluation around defining scope, exploring the product, selecting a representative sample, evaluating it, and reporting findings. It discusses representative sampling and complete processes. WCAG 2.2 sets conformance requirements for individual pages; WCAG-EM is guidance for evaluating a website using a sample, not a claim that one page establishes whole-site conformance.

Choose pages that expose different behaviors
Include representative page types rather than selecting only the most polished screens. A page with a long form, a navigation menu, a product or service detail, a search or filtering interaction, and a confirmation state may reveal different issues. If pages vary by language, device layout, or embedded service, account for those variations in the scope rather than assuming they behave alike.
Check the content and every important interaction
Read the visible content as if you were a visitor deciding what to do. AI-generated designs can look complete while containing generic placeholder text, invented business details, sample testimonials, ambiguous labels, or promises that the actual service cannot keep. Verify factual statements and replace or remove anything that is only illustrative.
Review the words people rely on
- Check headings, labels, instructions, calls to action, and error messages for accuracy and plain meaning.
- Confirm that names, addresses, contact details, prices, operating hours, policies, and service descriptions match reality before publishing them.
- Look for placeholder copy, fabricated testimonials, unsupported credentials, and implied guarantees. Do not present examples as real customer experiences or commitments.
- Make sure each page explains what the visitor can do next and that the call to action matches the destination or action.
Try the site as a visitor, including failure states
- Open each in-scope page and follow its visible links. Confirm each destination is relevant and loads as intended.
- Operate menus, buttons, tabs, dialogs, and other controls. Check that they respond consistently and do not lead to a dead end.
- Submit each important form with valid information. Check that submission completes, the visitor receives a clear confirmation, and the expected next step occurs.
- Where practical, submit invalid or incomplete information. Check that the error explains what needs correction, identifies the relevant field, and does not erase information unnecessarily.
- Test the complete journey from its starting point to its intended outcome, rather than judging individual screens in isolation.
These are practical content and functional checks. They do not mean that a particular standard or tool is designed to detect AI-generated factual errors.

Evaluate accessibility with tools and human review
Accessibility is not established by an attractive preview or a passing automated scan. W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) states, “No tool alone can determine if a site meets accessibility standards,” and that knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine whether a site is accessible. Use automated tools to help find some issues, then assess the actual pages and interactions. Where feasible, include accessibility expertise and evaluation involving people with disabilities.
Inspect common barriers in the built pages
- Structure: Check that headings describe the content beneath them and form a useful hierarchy. Confirm that page regions and content order make sense beyond their visual styling.
- Images: Provide useful text alternatives for informative images; decorative images should not add confusing or redundant text to assistive technology.
- Forms: Check that controls have clear labels and instructions, and that errors can be identified and understood.
- Keyboard use: Navigate without a mouse. Menus, dialogs, forms, and other interactive elements should be operable, with a visible focus indicator and a sensible order of movement.
- Readability: Inspect text contrast and test whether content remains usable when text is enlarged or the viewport changes.
These checks help focus a review; they are not a complete conformance determination. The WAI overview includes a directory with information on more than 100 accessibility evaluation tools, but inclusion in a directory does not by itself show that a tool is appropriate for a particular site or that a scan proves conformance. See the W3C WAI accessibility evaluation overview and tool directory.
Choose an evaluation approach that matches the claim
| Approach | Useful for | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Automated accessibility checker | Finding some detectable markup and presentation issues quickly | Coverage and results vary, and no tool alone determines accessibility. |
| Manual expert evaluation | Reviewing context, keyboard behavior, content, and issues automation may miss | Results depend on evaluator expertise and the pages and flows covered. |
| User evaluation, including people with disabilities | Understanding real task barriers and experience | It complements rather than replaces a conformance determination. |
| Formal WCAG-EM evaluation | Structuring a reportable evaluation of a representative sample against WCAG 2 | It is an evaluation methodology, not a substitute for WCAG requirements or ongoing quality assurance. |
When reviewing an audit or scan, ask what pages and processes were covered, which WCAG target level and version were used, whether the work included manual evaluation, and whether findings were documented and retested. A result without a clear scope is difficult to interpret.

Test mobile and real-world behavior
A design that looks balanced on a wide preview may be difficult to use on a narrow screen. Inspect the built site at narrow and wide viewport sizes, then use its core functions on the devices and browsers relevant to its audience. The result depends on the implementation, so this needs observation rather than inference from a generated mockup.

- Make sure buttons and other controls remain visible and reachable without awkward scrolling or precision tapping.
- Open menus and dialogs; confirm that they can be operated and dismissed on the devices in scope.
- Repeat essential tasks, such as submitting a form or reaching a service, on mobile as well as desktop.
Review privacy, security, and connected services
Generated designs may include forms, analytics, embedded media, chat widgets, or other external services. Review what information these components collect or transmit and whether the published privacy explanation accurately describes the site’s behavior. Do not assume a design mockup reveals what an integration does; inspect the services and implementation actually used.
Map data and check what the site says
For each form and embedded service, identify the information visitors provide or that may be collected, where it goes, and what the site tells visitors about it. Compare the real behavior with privacy statements and product claims. The Federal Trade Commission’s technology privacy and security guidance advises developers to consider privacy and security implications and be transparent about capabilities and privacy practices. It is U.S. government guidance focused on technology and apps; it does not determine every website’s legal obligations. Applicable requirements depend on the product and jurisdiction.

Review security decisions as the design changes
Consider whether the site handles sensitive information, uses authentication or access controls, connects to external services, or is exposed to untrusted networks. Record the reasoning and evidence behind significant design decisions. OWASP’s Secure by Design Framework checklist is intended as a design-phase review aid; OWASP recommends refreshing the review when changes affect security characteristics. Examples include new integrations, exposure to untrusted networks, sensitive data, new technologies, or changes to core workflows. Higher-risk work may warrant guidance from a security team.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the source and permitted use of every asset
Keep track of where text and visual materials came from and what their terms allow. This includes illustrations, photographs, icons, fonts, logos, and other assets, whether they were generated, supplied by a person, or pulled into a design by a tool. A tool’s inclusion of an asset is not proof that you have permission to publish it.
Record the source and applicable license or permission for each material asset. If the origin or permitted use is unclear, replace it with material whose terms you can verify or get appropriate advice before publishing. Copyright treatment can depend on the material, its creation, and jurisdiction; avoid assuming that every AI output is either protected or unprotected.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence page describes its continuing work on issues including copyrightability of generative AI outputs and training data. As stated on that page, Part 2, concerning copyrightability of generative AI outputs, was published January 29, 2025; Part 3, concerning generative AI training, was described as a pre-publication version released May 9, 2025. Check the Office page for its current status. These are U.S. materials, not a determination of rights in every country.
Keep a review record and retest after changes
A useful review record lets someone else understand what was examined, what failed, and whether a fix worked. For each finding, note the page or journey, the observed behavior, its impact, who will address it, the fix, and the retest result. Record the scope and evaluation approach too, so a later reader can see what a review does—and does not—support.
Recheck relevant pages and journeys after code generation, template changes, content updates, or new integrations. A change that alters a form, workflow, data collection, or security characteristics can invalidate part of an earlier review. WCAG-EM calls for documenting evaluation steps and findings; OWASP similarly emphasizes recording design considerations and revisiting security review when relevant characteristics change.

A practical issue log
| Record | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Location | Page, component, device or viewport, and the journey step |
| Observation | What happened when the page or control was used |
| Impact | Who may be blocked, confused, exposed, or misled |
| Action | Fix owner and the change required |
| Retest | What was checked after the fix and the result |
Use the record to distinguish unresolved blockers from issues that have been fixed and retested. Do not claim that the whole site was reviewed if only selected pages or automated checks were covered.
