Check that you have the Xbox-compatible set
“Arctis GameBuds” is used for two platform-specific packages. Before changing any settings, identify the version you own. SteelSeries lists the Xbox model as having a dual-mode dongle with separate Xbox and PlayStation/PC positions. The PlayStation model is designed for PlayStation and PC instead. A similar-looking earbud set is therefore not enough to establish Xbox compatibility.

If the package or product listing does not identify the Xbox version, confirm the model before troubleshooting. Do not assume that buying a different generic dongle will add Xbox support to the PlayStation package.

What is included and what each part does
The Xbox package includes the two earbuds, their charging case, a USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable, a USB-C wireless dongle, a USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable, and small, medium and large eartips. The dongle provides the 2.4 GHz wireless link used for the console connection. The case stores and charges the earbuds; the charging cable is for the case rather than a replacement for the wireless link.

The adapter is useful when the console connection you need is USB-A. Insert the USB-C dongle into the adapter’s USB-C socket, then insert the adapter’s USB-A plug into the console. If you can connect the dongle directly through USB-C, the adapter is not needed. The Xbox setup still depends on the dongle’s switch being in the correct mode.

Pair the GameBuds with Xbox: the normal setup
Follow these steps in order. They use the factory pairing between the earbuds and the dongle rather than starting a new pairing session.

- Find the mode switch. Locate the physical wireless-mode switch on the included 2.4 GHz dongle.
- Select Xbox mode. Move the switch to Xbox. The manual specifies PC mode for other supported devices; leaving the switch in PC mode is not the Xbox setup.
- Choose the connection cable. Plug the dongle directly into a compatible USB-C port, or connect it through the supplied USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter if the available console port is USB-A.
- Connect the dongle to the console. Push the connector fully into the port so the wireless accessory has a stable physical connection.
- Use the earbuds. Remove or activate the earbuds as you normally would. The earbuds and their included dongle are paired before delivery, so they should establish the 2.4 GHz connection without you entering a pairing menu.

What should happen after you connect the dongle?
The key sign of a normal setup is that the earbuds connect through the included dongle without a new pairing process. You do not need to search for the earbuds in an Xbox Bluetooth menu or hold an earbud button simply because this is the first time you are using them. The factory relationship is already established between the two components.
If nothing happens, do not immediately assume the earbuds are incompatible. First look at the dongle itself: verify the physical switch position, confirm that you are using the Xbox version, and check the connector and adapter. Those checks preserve the factory pairing and are quicker than resetting it.

Why the dongle switch matters
The Xbox model’s dongle supports more than one platform mode. The switch tells the dongle which operating mode to use. For an Xbox console, the required physical position is Xbox; the manual identifies PC as the position for other supported devices. This is a hardware setting, so changing a console menu while the dongle remains in the wrong position does not substitute for moving the switch.
Set the switch before connecting the dongle. If you change it after connection, disconnect and reconnect the dongle so the console and wireless accessory start the session in the intended mode. If you also use the GameBuds with another supported device, remember to return the switch to Xbox before the next console session.
If the earbuds do not connect
Start with the checks that do not alter the factory pairing. They address the most common setup mistakes without creating a new pairing state.
- Verify the variant: make sure the earbuds and dongle came from the Xbox package. The PlayStation package is a different platform variant.
- Inspect the switch: confirm that the dongle is physically set to Xbox, not PC.
- Check the cable path: if you used the adapter, confirm that the USB-C dongle is fully seated in the adapter and that the adapter is fully inserted into the console.
- Try a direct connection: when a compatible USB-C port is available, remove the adapter and connect the dongle directly.
- Reconnect the dongle: unplug it, wait briefly, and insert it again with the switch still in Xbox mode.
- Check the case and earbuds: place both earbuds in the charging case long enough to ensure they are seated and able to power up, then take them out and try again.
If these checks do not restore the link, use the manual 2.4 GHz re-pair procedure below. Re-pairing changes the wireless relationship, so it is best reserved for an actual connection failure rather than performed pre-emptively.
Manually re-pair the earbuds and dongle
The re-pair sequence uses the earbud buttons, the charging case and the dongle’s pairing button. Follow the order precisely; the LED colors indicate which wireless state the earbuds have entered.
- Place both earbuds in the charging case. Keep them in the case while beginning the procedure.
- Enter the initial earbud pairing state. Hold the button on either earbud for three seconds. The earbud LEDs blink blue.
- Switch to 2.4 GHz pairing mode. Press and hold an earbud button again for one second. The LEDs blink green, indicating the 2.4 GHz pairing mode used by the dongle.
- Connect the dongle. Plug the dongle into the device that will host the wireless connection. For Xbox use, set its physical switch to Xbox before connecting it to the console.
- Start dongle pairing. Press and hold the dongle’s pairing button for three seconds.
- Wait for the link. The earbuds and dongle should re-establish their 2.4 GHz relationship. Once the connection is restored, use the earbuds normally rather than repeating the pairing sequence.
SteelSeries describes the same progression in its product guide: blue blinking follows the three-second earbud-button hold, the second one-second hold changes the earbuds to green 2.4 GHz pairing mode, and holding the dongle button for three seconds starts the dongle side of the process. If the earbuds never reach the green state, return them to the case and repeat the button sequence from the beginning instead of holding the dongle button repeatedly.

How to choose between the Xbox and PlayStation versions
Choose based on the console you intend to use, not on the shared “GameBuds” name. The Xbox package is the directly relevant choice for an Xbox console because its supplied dongle includes an Xbox mode. SteelSeries describes the PlayStation package as designed for PlayStation and PC.

If you are shopping specifically for Xbox, look for the “Arctis GameBuds for Xbox” designation and confirm that the package includes the dual-mode dongle. The product listing for the Xbox model is Arctis GameBuds for Xbox. Product availability and package contents can change, so use the current listing and the included manual to verify what is in the box you receive.
Common setup mistakes and the correction for each
Using the PlayStation package on Xbox
The earbuds may look almost identical, but the platform variants are not interchangeable by assumption. If your package is labeled for PlayStation, first establish whether it is the Xbox model before investing time in re-pairing. A different dongle is not presented by SteelSeries as a general method for converting the PlayStation package into an Xbox product.
Leaving the dongle in PC mode
The Xbox model has a physical switch, and the Xbox position is required for the console procedure. PC mode is intended for other supported devices. Inspect the switch directly rather than relying on how it was positioned when you removed it from the box.
Skipping the adapter when the port requires USB-A
The package includes a USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable specifically to provide a USB-A connection option. If the dongle itself is USB-C and the available console port is USB-A, use that supplied adapter instead of forcing an incompatible connector or assuming the earbuds are defective.
Trying to pair manually before checking the factory link
The earbuds and included dongle arrive paired. Starting the manual routine unnecessarily can replace a working factory relationship with a pairing state that still needs to be completed. First set the switch to Xbox, connect the dongle, and try the earbuds. Use the blue-then-green re-pair sequence only when the normal connection fails.

Holding the wrong control for the wrong duration
The recovery procedure has three different timing actions: three seconds on an earbud to begin, one second on an earbud to change to green 2.4 GHz pairing mode, and three seconds on the dongle’s pairing button. A missed duration can leave the earbuds in a different state, so release the control and restart the sequence rather than mixing steps.

A short diagnostic decision path
- No connection immediately after installation: verify that you have the Xbox variant and that the dongle switch is on Xbox.
- The dongle may not be seated: remove and reconnect it, using the supplied adapter only when the available port is USB-A.
- The factory relationship still does not work: place both earbuds in the case and perform the blue-LED, green-LED and three-second dongle-button re-pair sequence.
- The re-pair sequence does not complete: restart from the first earbud step, ensuring that the earbuds are in the case and that the dongle is connected before its three-second pairing-button hold.
This path keeps model identification, switch position, physical connection and wireless re-pairing separate. That separation helps you identify whether the failure is caused by using the wrong variant, selecting the wrong dongle mode, making an adapter connection incorrectly or losing the original 2.4 GHz pairing.
Before replacing anything
Do not purchase a replacement dongle as a first troubleshooting step. The complete Xbox package already includes the wireless dongle, its dual-mode switch and the USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter. First confirm that the dongle belongs to the Xbox package, is set to Xbox, and is firmly connected. A missing or damaged cable is a physical-connection issue; it does not change which GameBuds variant is compatible with Xbox.
Likewise, the charging cable should not be substituted for the wireless dongle. Its listed role is charging the case. The console’s 2.4 GHz connection is provided by the separate wireless dongle.
Final Xbox connection checklist
- Both earbuds and the dongle are from the Arctis GameBuds for Xbox package.
- The dongle’s physical switch is set to Xbox.
- The USB-C dongle is connected directly, or through the included USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter when USB-A is required.
- You have tried the normal factory-paired connection before starting a manual pairing routine.
- If recovery was necessary, the earbud LEDs blinked blue after the three-second hold, then green after the one-second hold, and the dongle pairing button was held for three seconds.
Once those conditions are met, the Xbox-specific GameBuds setup is complete. The essential choice is the Xbox variant; the essential setting is the dongle’s Xbox mode; and the only pairing procedure normally needed is the factory pairing already present between the included earbuds and dongle.

Can I use the PlayStation version of GameBuds on an Xbox console?
Do not assume it will work. SteelSeries identifies the Xbox and PlayStation packages as different variants. The Xbox package has a dongle position specifically marked Xbox, while the PlayStation package is described for PlayStation and PC.
What if my Xbox connection uses USB-A?
Use the included USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable. Insert the USB-C wireless dongle into the adapter’s USB-C socket, then plug the adapter’s USB-A connector into the console.

What do the blue and green LEDs mean during re-pairing?
With both earbuds in the case, hold an earbud button for three seconds until the LEDs blink blue. Hold an earbud button again for one second; blinking green indicates 2.4 GHz pairing mode. Then hold the dongle’s pairing button for three seconds.
Should I buy a generic replacement dongle to make another GameBuds version work on Xbox?
No such conversion is specified by SteelSeries. Verify that you own the Arctis GameBuds for Xbox package and use its included dual-mode dongle rather than assuming a generic replacement adds Xbox compatibility.
