What to Check Before Upgrading a Self-Hosted Docker Management UI

Before upgrading a self-hosted Docker management UI, verify the exact deployment and version path, protect persistent state, check Docker Engine and agent compatibility, follow component sequencing, and test a rollback that uses a matching database and binary.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before upgrading a self-hosted Docker management UI, record exactly what is running, confirm that the installed-to-target path is supported, check Docker Engine and agent compatibility, back up and test the UI’s persistent state, and prepare a rollback that uses a matching application version and database. Then schedule the change, follow the product’s procedure for the correct deployment mode, and run a defined smoke test.

The details differ by product, installed version, target version, and whether the UI runs on Docker Standalone, Swarm, or another platform. A procedure that is correct for one mode or product can damage another installation, so treat vendor documentation and release notes as part of the change itself.

What should I check before upgrading a self-hosted Docker management UI?

Use this order:

  1. Inventory the product, versions, deployment mode, data mounts, configuration, endpoints, agents, plugins, and authentication integrations.
  2. Read release notes and migration guidance from the installed version through the target version.
  3. Compare the target UI with every managed host’s Docker Engine, API level, architecture, agent, plugin, and storage integration.
  4. Back up the UI’s persistent data and the configuration needed to recreate it; verify that the backup can actually be restored.
  5. Confirm the documented order for connected components, such as a server and its agents.
  6. Choose a maintenance window, test an unvalidated path on a non-critical instance, and define acceptance checks.
  7. Keep the current image reference and a matching database backup available before making the change.

This checklist protects the management plane. It does not replace normal backups for application data in the workloads that the UI manages.

1. Record the deployment you actually have

Do not begin with the image tag you intend to install. Begin with evidence from the running system. Write down the product name, exact installed version, target version, container image reference, and deployment platform. A Docker Standalone installation, a Swarm service, and a package or appliance installation may have different update and rollback procedures.

Capture the version and image identity

Record the version shown in the UI and the image reference used by the deployment definition. If the deployment uses a mutable tag, also retain the digest or other immutable identifier available in your registry and keep the currently running image so that recovery does not depend on a tag silently moving. The exact image-recording method depends on your deployment tooling; the important result is an unambiguous reference for both the current and target images.

Map state, configuration, and integrations

Inventory item What to record Why it matters during an upgrade
Persistent state Volume or bind-mount name and host path containing the UI database and metadata Replacing a container without reattaching this state can make the installation appear empty or unconfigured.
Deployment definition Compose file, Swarm stack, manifests, environment values, secrets, labels, and networks These files are needed to reproduce the same mounts, ports, permissions, and connections.
Managed hosts Every endpoint, its Docker Engine version, architecture, and connection method One incompatible host can fail while others continue to work.
Agents and plugins Agent versions, volume or storage plugins, API clients, and extensions Connected components may have their own compatibility requirements and upgrade order.
Access and automation Authentication providers, certificates, role mappings, webhooks, scripts, and scheduled jobs A UI can start successfully while an integration or automation silently stops working.
Critical workflows Stacks, service updates, console access, image management, backups, and other operations your team performs These become the post-upgrade acceptance tests.

Store this inventory with the change record, not only inside the container being replaced. If the product offers separate installation paths, use the instructions for the path you recorded; do not substitute a Standalone procedure for a Swarm deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Validate the exact upgrade path

Read every release note you cross

Read the target release notes and the notes for intermediate releases between the installed and target versions. Look specifically for database migrations, changed defaults, removed features, required configuration edits, altered names, restart behavior, and changes to dependent scripts or stacks. A major-version jump can include behavior introduced several releases earlier.

Check whether an intermediate version is required

Use the vendor’s migration or upgrade guide to determine whether a direct jump is supported. If the path is not tested or validated, treat it as a test project first. Portainer’s guidance is to test an untested path on a non-critical system before changing production. A staging instance should use representative endpoints, authentication, plugins, and stacks; otherwise it may miss the incompatibility that matters.

Compare candidate targets on the risks that matter

Decision axis Questions to answer
Support status Is the installed-to-target path explicitly documented and supported, or is an intermediate release required?
Host compatibility Are all managed Docker Engine versions and API levels supported by the target UI?
Component compatibility Do agents, plugins, storage integrations, and architectures match the target requirements?
Data migration Will the UI migrate its database, and can the previous binary read the resulting schema if rollback is needed?
Workload behavior Could stack updates, generated names, or service operations restart containers or change scripts?
Testability Can the path be exercised on a non-critical instance and within a realistic maintenance window?

Do not treat a moving latest tag as an upgrade plan. The sources for this checklist establish the need for exact, version-specific procedures; they do not define one universal tagging policy for every management UI.

3. Check Docker Engine, API, and component compatibility

Compare every managed host

Check the target UI’s supported Docker Engine versions against every host it manages, including remote endpoints. Include API compatibility, CPU architecture, agent versions, plugins, storage drivers, and any client libraries used by automation. A management UI may launch normally while one endpoint fails because its daemon exposes an older or changed API.

Use Docker Engine 29 as a concrete warning

Docker Engine 29.0.0 release notes, dated November 10, 2025, state that the release includes breaking changes and deprecations and that the daemon requires API v1.44 or later. That is a host-side compatibility checkpoint, not a claim that every UI has the same requirements. Read the target UI’s own support matrix before upgrading an Engine or the UI.

Account for recent API changes

A Portainer technical advisory dated March 10, 2026 warns that Docker Engine v29 API changes can reject older clients and tooling, with particular impact in Swarm environments and with legacy volume plugins. Treat this as a Portainer-specific warning and verify the exact Server, Agent, Engine, and plugin versions in your environment.

An earlier Portainer advisory shows why version pairs matter: Docker 26 removed image API response fields that older Portainer versions relied on, affecting image details and container console access. The practical lesson is to check the supported-version documentation for the exact UI and Engine combination rather than assuming that a minor-looking daemon upgrade is harmless.

4. Protect recoverability before touching the container

Back up the management UI’s own state

Back up the UI database and all persistent directories or bind mounts that contain configuration, certificates, keys, templates, and metadata. Keep the backup outside the container or volume being replaced, record when it was made, and restrict access because it may contain credentials or encryption material.

Verify restoration, not just backup creation

A successful archive command proves only that bytes were copied. Verify that the backup is readable, complete, and restorable to an isolated test instance or a disposable copy of the data volume. Document the restore steps, required permissions, and the application version used for the test. If a full restore test is impractical, at minimum inspect the archive, confirm expected files and size, and rehearse how the deployment definition would reattach it.

Separate UI state from workload data

A management UI backup does not automatically protect application volumes, databases, object stores, or other data inside the workloads it controls. Confirm separately that each critical workload has its normal backup and recovery process, including credentials and encryption keys. The UI backup protects the control plane; it is not a substitute for application-level backups.

Portainer’s documented limitation

Portainer recommends taking a backup before updating. Its automatic fallback is a backup of portainer.db stored in the portainer_data volume. That is useful protection for the database, but it is not an assurance that every installation file, certificate, custom configuration, or external dependency has been captured. Include the rest of the persistent state and deployment definition in your own backup scope.

5. Plan component order and downtime

Follow the product’s sequencing rules

For Portainer, the general recommendation is to update the Server before the Agents. Portainer says it designs Server compatibility with older Agents in mind, while some Agent changes may not be fully backward compatible with older Servers. Other products may use a different order, so apply this sequence only to the documented Portainer procedure or to an equivalent instruction from your own vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a maintenance window based on operations

Estimate time for the upgrade, a restart, health checks, and a rollback if necessary. Freeze unrelated changes to stacks, hosts, plugins, and authentication during that window. Notify operators that the management UI may be unavailable even if the workloads continue running; a control-plane outage and a workload outage are different risks, but both affect response procedures.

Define a stop condition

Decide in advance which failures trigger rollback: inability to open the UI, missing environments, failed authentication, broken console access, incompatible plugins, or failed critical stack operations. Once a stop condition is reached, stop making additional changes. Troubleshooting several variables at once makes recovery less predictable.

6. Execute the upgrade without losing the deployment

  1. Confirm the inventory, backup location, restore procedure, current image reference, and target image reference immediately before the change.
  2. Re-read the vendor procedure for the exact product version and deployment mode. Portainer’s Standalone and Swarm paths are distinct; do not transpose commands or service definitions.
  3. Ensure the persistent volume or bind mount is attached to the replacement container or service exactly as documented, with the required ownership and permissions.
  4. Use the recorded target image reference rather than an untracked moving tag, and preserve the deployment files and environment values used to launch it.
  5. Upgrade connected components in the documented order. For Portainer, update the Server before the Agents unless the release-specific instructions say otherwise.
  6. Watch startup logs and orchestration events for database migration errors, permission failures, missing mounts, failed endpoint connections, or repeated restarts.
  7. Do not delete the old image, backup, or deployment definition until the smoke test passes and the change is accepted.

The exact pull, stop, service-update, or compose commands vary by product and platform. A generic command copied from another installation is less safe than the vendor’s version-specific procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Run a deliberate post-upgrade smoke test

Check the control plane before declaring success:

  • Open the UI and confirm that it reports the intended version.
  • Sign in through each supported authentication path, including any external identity provider used by operators.
  • Confirm that all expected environments, endpoints, stacks, templates, roles, and settings are present.
  • Inspect service status and logs for migration warnings, authentication errors, endpoint disconnects, and plugin failures.
  • Perform a low-risk read operation on each class of managed host, such as viewing services, images, volumes, and node information.
  • Exercise the critical workflows your inventory identified: updating a test stack, opening a console where appropriate, reviewing logs, or running a controlled image operation.
  • Confirm that automation, webhooks, certificates, and scheduled tasks still work.

Record the observed version, endpoint status, and test results. A green container status alone is not an acceptance test.

8. Prepare and use a rollback plan

Understand the database constraint

Portainer notes that an older binary generally cannot open a newer database schema. Rolling back only the container image after a successful migration can therefore fail. A safe rollback pairs the previous application image with a database backup made before the upgrade, or follows the product’s documented downgrade method.

Rollback sequence

  1. Stop further upgrades and record the failure symptoms and logs.
  2. Preserve the failed version’s data separately if the vendor may need it for diagnosis; do not overwrite your pre-upgrade backup.
  3. Stop the upgraded deployment according to the platform procedure.
  4. Restore the pre-upgrade persistent data to the location expected by the previous version.
  5. Start the exact previous image or package version that matches that database backup.
  6. Verify the UI, endpoints, authentication, and critical workflows using the same smoke-test list.
  7. Keep the incident record and decide whether to retry after testing, remain on the previous version, or seek vendor support.

For Portainer, the documented rollback requirement is explicit: restore the earlier database and start the previous image version, with the version matching the backed-up database. Do not attempt a downgrade by pointing an old binary at a database that the new binary has already migrated.

Version-specific behaviors worth checking in release notes

Compose V2 naming changes

Portainer release notes say its Compose V2 upgrade changed generated container-name separators from underscores to hyphens. If scripts, monitoring rules, firewall policies, or operators referenced generated names, search for those references before upgrading and update them deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stack restarts in Portainer 2.20.3

Documentation for Portainer 2.20.3 says that updating stacks and edge stacks could restart their containers because of the included Docker Compose 2.26.1 behavior. This is a dated, release-specific example, not a prediction about every current release. Check the notes for the version you will install and schedule the change around any stated restart behavior.

API and deprecation notices

Read host-engine release notes as well as UI release notes. Docker Engine 29’s breaking-change warning and minimum API v1.44 illustrate why a UI upgrade plan can fail even when the UI itself has no migration error: a daemon, plugin, or client may reject a request after the host changes.

When is the path safe enough to approve?

Approve the change only when all of these statements are true:

  • The installed and target versions, image references, deployment mode, mounts, and integrations are recorded.
  • The vendor documents the path, or a representative non-critical test has passed for an otherwise unvalidated path.
  • Every managed Engine and connected component is within the target’s supported range.
  • The UI state and recreation configuration are backed up, and restoration has been verified or rehearsed.
  • The component order, maintenance window, stop conditions, and rollback owners are agreed.
  • The post-upgrade smoke tests cover the operations your team actually depends on.

If one answer is no, the change is not ready. Delay the upgrade, narrow the scope, or test the missing part rather than relying on a hopeful restart.
