On a Pixel 9, screen saver controls are under Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver. Turn on Use screen saver, choose what to show, then set When to show to While charging or, where available, While upright and charging. Use Low light mode to choose whether the saver changes to a dim clock or the display turns off in a dark room.
Set up a screen saver while charging
Google’s Pixel Phone Help describes these screen saver instructions for Android 14 and later. The menu labels and available choices can vary with Android version, software build, language, or the screen saver app installed, so a Pixel 9 may not show every option exactly as described.

- Open the screen saver settings. Go to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver.
- Enable the feature. Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the content. Select a clock, weather, personal photo frame, charging status, Home controls, or another compatible screen saver if one appears.
- Set the trigger. Open When to show and choose While charging or While upright and charging, depending on how you want the phone to behave.
- Set dark-room behavior. Open Low light mode and choose whether a dark environment should show a low light clock or turn the screen off.
- Preview the result. Use Use screen saver to preview your selection. To see it start normally, leave the display on and let it time out.
Screen saver activation is separate from screen timeout. If you want to change how long the display stays on before timing out, go to Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout. Pressing the Power button to turn the display off does not start the screen saver; the documented behavior is for it to appear when the display times out.
Think of setup as three separate decisions: the content, the condition that allows it to appear, and what happens if the room is dim. Choosing a clock or photo frame does not itself make the saver start while charging; the When to show choice controls that condition. Likewise, Low light mode changes the saver’s dark-room behavior, not its charging trigger.

Choose the right charging or docking trigger
The trigger controls the circumstances in which the saver can appear; it does not choose what the saver displays. Google’s general Pixel screen saver guidance lists While charging and While upright and charging. For the Home Controls screen saver on Android 15 or later, Google Home guidance instead lists While charging and While docked and charging. These are feature-specific labels, not a guarantee that every Pixel 9 screen saver menu has a separate dock option.
| Choice | When it is intended to show | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| While charging | During a charging session, without requiring the upright or docked condition in the label. | You want the saver to appear when the phone is charging, regardless of whether you use a stand. |
| While upright and charging | While the phone is charging and upright. | You want a charging display primarily when the phone is propped up, such as on a compatible stand. |
| While docked and charging | For Home Controls on Android 15 or later, while the phone is docked and charging. | You want Home Controls limited to a docked charging setup. This is the Home Controls guidance’s wording and may not appear for other screen saver types. |
“Docked” refers to connection to a dock accessory in Google’s general explanation. The built-in screen saver settings do not require buying a dock. If you want upright wireless charging, Google advises using a Qi 1.x wireless charger or a Pixel Stand that works with the phone. Check the product’s compatibility information for Pixel 9 rather than assuming a particular charger or stand will work.
The hardware and the setting solve different problems. The setting determines when the saver can appear; a dock or stand is optional hardware for holding or charging the phone. You can configure the screen saver without purchasing one. If you do want a stand for an upright charging arrangement, verify that the exact product listing says it works with Pixel 9. The available guidance does not certify every third-party charger or stand, so do not treat a general Qi or stand description as confirmation of a specific model.

The available choices can differ by device software and installed apps. Google lists these types of content in its Pixel charging guidance:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Clock: Choose a clock-style screen saver for a simple time display.
- Weather: Show weather updates. This option requires location permission set to Always allow.
- Personal photo frame: Show selected photos. It requires access to photos and media.
- Charging status: Use the saver to display charging information.
- Home controls: On Android 15 or higher, the Home Controls screen saver can provide access to smart home controls while the device is locked and charging. Its show-when choices depend on whether you want it available while charging or only while docked and charging.
- Other compatible screen savers: Apps that support Android screen savers may also appear in the selection list.
Some types ask for permissions because they need access to information or content on the phone. If weather or photos do not appear as expected, check the permission required for that screen saver in its settings; the relevant requirements documented by Google are Always allow location access for weather and photo-and-media access for a photo frame.
Choose content according to what you want visible during charging. A clock is a simple time display, while charging status puts charging information on screen; weather and personal photos need their respective permissions. Home controls are a separate, feature-specific choice: their documented access while locked and charging applies to the Home Controls screen saver on Android 15 or later, not automatically to every other saver. If a type is missing from the list, availability can depend on the software version or a compatible screen saver app.
Configure low light behavior
Low light mode determines what happens to the screen saver when the surroundings are dim. Google says the default in dim surroundings is a low light clock. In the screen saver settings, open Low light mode to choose between a low light clock and turning the screen off. The choice affects what the screen saver does in a dark environment; it is not the setting that starts the screen saver.

Do not confuse this with Night Light. Night Light adjusts display color for dim use, while Low light mode changes the screen saver’s behavior in a dark room. On Pixel 9 and earlier, Google documents Night Light under Settings > Display & touch > Night Light, with scheduling and intensity controls. Changing Night Light does not select the screen saver’s low-light outcome.
Match the settings to how you use the phone
For a charging display on a desk or bedside table
Enable the screen saver, pick a clock or charging-status option, and choose While charging. If you want the display to go dark instead of showing a dim clock when the room is dark, change Low light mode accordingly. The screen saver still depends on the display timing out; pressing Power to turn the screen off will not trigger it.
For an upright charging setup
Choose While upright and charging if that option appears and you want the saver tied to upright placement as well as charging. The setting is software behavior; a stand is not needed to enable it. If you are buying hardware to hold and charge the Pixel 9, verify that the charger or stand is compatible with the phone. Google’s charging guidance mentions Qi 1.x wireless chargers and compatible Pixel Stands, but does not establish compatibility for every product.
For smart-home controls while docked
Use the Home Controls screen saver instructions if your goal is access to smart-home controls. Google documents this option for Android 15 or higher, with While charging to show controls without docking and While docked and charging to require the docked condition. The locked-and-charging availability described for Home Controls is specific to this feature; do not assume the same dock setting or lock-screen behavior applies to clocks, photos, or every screen saver.

If the screen saver does not appear
- Confirm it is enabled. Return to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and check that Use screen saver is on.
- Check the selected trigger. A saver set to appear only while upright and charging will not meet the documented trigger unless the phone is both upright and charging. For Home Controls, the docked choice is specific to that screen saver on Android 15 or higher.
- Let the display time out. Leave the display on and wait for its screen timeout. Pressing Power to switch the display off will not start the saver.
- Check the separate timeout setting. Review Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout if the screen is not timing out as expected.
- Review permissions for content that is missing. Weather needs location set to Always allow; a personal photo frame needs access to photos and media.
- Account for version and feature differences. The general Pixel instructions apply to Android 14 and later, while Home Controls guidance specifies Android 15 or higher. If a label such as While docked and charging is absent from a non-Home Controls saver, that alone does not indicate a problem.
If the saver appears in preview but not during ordinary use, check the trigger and timeout separately: previewing confirms the selected content, while normal activation depends on the display timing out under the selected show-when condition. If the content itself is unavailable or incomplete, check the relevant permissions and whether that screen saver type is offered on your software version. Google’s instructions cover Android 14 and later for general screen saver setup and Android 15 or later for Home Controls, so a difference in labels can be a version or feature distinction rather than a fault.

What does Low light mode do, and is it the same as Night Light?
Low light mode changes the screen saver in a dim environment: it can show a low light clock or turn the screen off. Google says the low light clock is the default. Night Light is separate and adjusts display color; it does not choose the screen saver’s dark-room behavior.
Why are weather or photos missing from my screen saver?
Weather updates require location permission set to Always allow, and a personal photo frame requires access to photos and media. Screen saver types and compatible app options can also vary by software version.
Do I need to buy a dock or stand to use a Pixel 9 screen saver?
No. The built-in screen saver settings do not require a dock purchase. If you want upright wireless charging, Google advises using a Qi 1.x wireless charger or a Pixel Stand that works with the phone; verify Pixel 9 compatibility for the exact product.
