1. Identify the exact model and edition
Record the console family and model number, plus storage capacity, edition, and included accessories where relevant. Use those details to match the device to the buyer’s current listing or trade-in offer. A mismatch can mean a different value or an ineligible item.

2. Inspect and test the hardware
Test the console before relying on a quoted value. Check that it powers on and that its functions work; test each controller and any other accessory separately. Inspect the device for cracks, major damage, corrosion, heavy wear, or anything that could make it unsafe to handle or use.

3. Gather the accessories the buyer requires
Do not assume every buyer wants the same parts. Check the current requirements for your exact model before making a store trip or shipping the device.

If a required HDMI or power cable is missing, compare the cost of a compatible replacement with the likely change in the offer before buying one. Match the connector and console model exactly. The cited criteria show that these parts can matter; they do not guarantee that replacing a cable will secure acceptance or increase the final payment.
4. Back up and erase your data before handoff
- Back up what you want to keep. Save relevant game saves, captures, and other content using the platform’s official instructions.
- Remove or deregister your accounts. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific console so the device is no longer tied to your account.
- Run the data-erasing reset. Confirm that you are choosing the option that deletes user data, not merely restoring default settings.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s U.S. support page, accessed October 7, 2026, states: “Resetting your PS5 console or initializing your PS4 console deletes user and game data as well as any personalized settings.” Sony warns that this cannot be undone. It distinguishes this from restoring default settings, which does not erase user or game data. Follow Sony’s reset instructions for PS5 and PS4.

Compare what you would actually receive, not just a headline quote. A trade-in may offer cash or store credit; a private sale may involve platform fees, shipping, time, and the risk of a failed or disputed transaction. Factor in the effort and timing as well as the amount.
