Spotify’s official updates in April and May 2026 said Audiobooks in Premium was available in 22 markets. A Spanish report published October 7 attributed the expansion target to Spotify, but no matching Spotify announcement confirming it was found.
What Spotify has confirmed—and what remains a target
Spotify said on April 15 and May 21, 2026, that its Audiobooks in Premium offering was live in 22 markets, with a catalog of more than 700,000 titles. On October 7, Spanish newspaper Cinco Días reported that Spotify had launched audiobooks in Spain and planned to expand availability from 22 to more than 180 markets before the end of 2026. The figure should therefore be read as a reported plan, not as a verified current market count.

Spotify’s official April update described product changes and its then-current market count, while its May update announced planned additions to plans and author tools. Neither confirms the more-than-180 target. For the latest status in a particular country, check Spotify’s local service information rather than assuming the target has been met.
Availability does not mean the same access everywhere
A market being included in an audiobook rollout does not establish that every listener there receives the same plan benefits, catalog, languages, or features. Spotify’s November 2025 Nordic launch is one example: eligible Premium subscribers in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Monaco received 12 audiobook listening hours per month. Spotify also described paid hour top-ups, an Audiobooks+ add-on, and individual audiobook purchases for free users. Those terms were specific to that launch and should not be treated as worldwide rules. Spotify’s Nordic launch announcement sets out those details.

When checking your own market, look for these distinctions:
- Whether audiobooks are available in your country.
- Whether access requires an eligible Premium plan or individual purchases are offered.
- Any included listening-hour allowance, top-up, or add-on terms.
- Which titles and languages are available locally.
- Whether specific features and devices are supported.
What Spotify has added to the audiobook experience
A larger catalog and more reading tools
Spotify reported more than 700,000 audiobook titles in its 2026 updates. In April, it also said Page Match was expanding to more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. The feature is intended to connect a print or e-book edition with its audiobook. Spotify reported that Page Match users streamed an average of 55% more audiobook hours per week than other listeners, and that 62% of Page Matched titles were books those users had not streamed before. These are company-reported observations; they do not prove Page Match caused the differences. Spotify’s April 15 update describes the changes and figures.
Recaps, charts, and physical books
The April announcement also said Recaps were available on Android and audiobook charts had been introduced in Germany. Spotify said readers in the United States and United Kingdom could buy physical books through Bookshop.org in the Spotify app. The announcement specified Android availability at that time and said iOS purchases would follow the next week; those rollout details should not be assumed to describe current device support. In May 2026, Spotify announced higher-hour Audiobooks+ tiers for summer and plans to extend audiobook access to Family and Student plans later in the year. It also described invite-only beta audiobook-creation tools for self-published authors, powered by ElevenLabs technology and initially limited to English in select markets. These were announcements, not proof that the features have since launched everywhere. Spotify warned that market, plan, and feature details could change. Spotify’s May update and its announcement details provide the stated qualifications.
Rank #3
Why Spotify is widening audiobook access
The company has framed audiobooks as part of a broader reading experience that links listening with print and e-books. Spotify’s Global Head of Audiobooks, Owen Smith, said in the April 15 newsroom post: “These updates demonstrate our continued ambition to make reading fit into modern life.” Its Bookshop.org partnership gives app users in the U.S. and U.K. a way to buy physical books, while Page Match is designed to help move between a book edition and its audio version.
Spotify also reported that audiobook listeners in its English-language markets grew 36% year over year and total audiobook listening hours grew 37% year over year in figures published in November 2025. Those are Spotify-reported growth figures for English-language markets, not measures of the later global rollout. Spotify’s November 2025 announcement gives the figures and scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the “over 180 markets” claim
The most accurate reading is that Spotify was reported to be aiming for broader audiobook availability by year-end 2026, while its latest cited official market count in April and May was 22. The report does not establish the rollout timetable for each country or whether access, subscription inclusion, catalog size, languages, and features will be consistent across markets. Availability should be verified locally as Spotify updates its service.
