What to Check Before Switching Your Default Browser

A careful browser switch starts with checking what transfers, what syncs, and whether your essential sites and tools work before changing the system default.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing your default browser, make sure the new one can handle the data, devices, privacy choices, and everyday websites you rely on. Inventory what you need, check which items can actually be imported or synced, test important workflows, and only then change the system setting. Keep the old browser available until you have verified the move.

Decide what a successful switch needs to preserve

A browser switch is not just an app change. It can affect where your bookmarks and saved passwords live, which extensions are available, how you sign in across devices, and which app opens links from other programs. The right preparation depends on what you use, not on a general claim that one browser is best.

Before installing or setting up the replacement, write down the things that would make the switch inconvenient if they went missing. Include both information you want to carry over and tasks that must continue to work. This creates a short acceptance checklist: you can test each item before relying on the new browser.

  • Bookmarks or favorites, saved passwords, browsing history, open tabs, and autofill details you want to keep.
  • Extensions, browser profiles, settings, and site-specific preferences you depend on.
  • Devices on which you browse, and whether you expect bookmarks, passwords, or other data to stay in sync.
  • Important websites, work or school services, authentication methods, and accessibility tools that must work in your normal setup.

Also identify where your current passwords are stored: in the browser on this device, in an account-based sync service, or in a separate password manager. Knowing the source matters because changing browsers does not automatically move data from every storage location.

Check what can be imported from your current browser

Import support depends on the source browser, destination browser, operating system, and sometimes the particular data category. Do not assume that selecting an import option will copy everything or that every item will behave the same afterward. Open the destination browser’s import screen and check the source browser and categories it actually offers on your device.

For example, Microsoft documents importing favorites, history, cookies, autofill data, extensions, settings, and other browsing data into Edge. Microsoft Support separately documents importing favorites and passwords, including through HTML and CSV files. Mozilla’s Firefox comparison pages describe importing bookmarks, passwords, history, and preferences from Chrome or Edge. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every category transfers for every browser pair or version.

Review categories one by one

  • Bookmarks or favorites: Confirm the destination has the folders and links you expect. If the import screen offers a file-based route, note the supported format and where you will save the export.
  • Passwords: Check whether the destination can import them directly or requires a file. After importing, test a few important sign-ins rather than assuming the transfer succeeded.
  • History and open tabs: Verify whether these are offered at all. If a tab is essential, save its address or bookmark it before moving; do not rely on open tabs being part of the import.
  • Extensions and settings: Check whether they can be imported and whether the destination offers the same extension. Even if an extension is listed as importable, review its permissions and settings in the new browser.
  • Cookies and autofill: Find out whether they are included and whether you want them transferred. A site may ask you to sign in again even when other data imports successfully.

If you export passwords to a CSV file, treat that file as sensitive credentials. Keep it somewhere access-controlled while it is needed, import it into the intended destination, confirm the result, and remove the temporary copy securely. Do not leave an unprotected password export in a downloads folder, email attachment, or shared location.

Plan how your data will sync across devices

Importing moves selected data into a browser; syncing is a separate choice that can keep selected categories available through an account on multiple devices. Check that the browser has an app for each device you use, then decide whether to sign in and which categories to synchronize. A browser account is also a decision about where some of your data is stored and which service manages it.

Google’s Chrome support describes syncing bookmarks, passwords, extensions, settings, history, and tabs with a Google Account when the relevant choices are enabled. Its listed account-linked data also includes payment and identity information, web apps, and preferences. Mozilla describes Firefox Sync through a Mozilla account for bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. The categories and controls are not identical, so review the current account settings rather than inferring that all browser data syncs by default.

Make a device-by-device sync plan

  1. List the computers, phones, and tablets on which you need the new browser.
  2. Install the browser on those devices and confirm that the features you rely on are available in each app.
  3. Choose whether to sign in to the browser’s account service. If you do, inspect the individual sync categories and enable only the ones you want.
  4. Check that the intended data appears on a second device before depending on sync as your only copy.

Account and sync features can change. The controls shown in a current browser may differ from older instructions, so use the settings in the version you have installed. If you prefer not to sync a category, make a separate plan for accessing or backing up that information.

Read privacy and data controls separately from migration features

Import, account sign-in, sync, tracking protection, personalization, and data sharing are different controls. A successful import does not tell you what happens after you sign in or turn on sync. Before enabling those features, read the browser’s current privacy settings and decide which trade-offs you accept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mozilla describes Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection. It also says Firefox Sync encrypts data on the device before it leaves. Microsoft says Edge import happens locally, and its privacy documentation describes circumstances in which browsing data can be sent to Microsoft, including after enabling account sync or certain personalization settings. These are vendor descriptions of their own products; they do not establish a universal privacy ranking or mean that a single setting prevents all collection or tracking.

Questions to answer in the settings

  • Can you use the browser without signing into an account, and what features would that leave unavailable?
  • Which data categories are included in sync, and can you turn off categories individually?
  • What tracking-protection controls are available, and what effect might they have on sites you use?
  • Which personalization or data-sharing choices are enabled, and what information do their descriptions say they send?

Make these choices intentionally during setup or afterward in the browser’s privacy and account settings. Avoid treating labels such as “private” or “protected” as a complete explanation of data handling; inspect the specific controls that apply to your use.

Test the sites, tools, and accessibility setup you actually use

No import guide establishes that every website, extension, work service, or assistive-technology combination will behave identically in a different browser. Compatibility is personal: a browser can be suitable for general browsing yet fail an important task in your own setup. Test before changing the default so that a problem does not interrupt work, school, or access to an essential service.

Use a practical test list

  • Open your work, school, banking, health, government, shopping, and media sites.
  • Sign in and test the authentication method you use, including passkeys or other sign-in steps where applicable.
  • Check video or audio playback, downloads, printing, and any web apps or browser extensions central to your routine.
  • Try the sites on the actual devices and networks where you use them, rather than relying only on a desktop test if you also browse on a phone or tablet.
  • If you use a screen reader, voice control, magnification, a switch device, or another assistive tool, test it with the new browser and the sites you need.

If a site or tool fails, note the exact step and whether the problem is repeatable. Check the site’s own browser requirements and the new browser’s settings or extension support. Until the task works reliably, keep the old browser available for it rather than treating the default change as irreversible.

Change the default in the operating system

Install and configure the new browser before selecting it as the default. The route differs by operating system and version; menu labels can also vary by device maker. Use the path for your device and follow any additional onscreen prompts.

Device and software Default-browser path What to note
Mac with macOS Ventura 13 or later Apple menu → System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser Apple documents this path for Ventura 13 or later.
Mac with an earlier macOS version Apple menu → System Preferences → General → Default web browser The earlier macOS route uses System Preferences rather than System Settings.
iPhone or iPad Settings → Apps → Default Apps; choose the browser feature, then select an app Available default-app options can depend on software version and region, and more onscreen steps may appear.
Android Settings → Apps → Default apps (or Choose default apps) → Browser app Device makers may use different labels. Search Settings for “default apps” if the path differs.
Windows 11, using Google’s documented Chrome flow Settings → Apps → Default apps; search for Chrome, select it, and set it as default Review the file and link types shown. This is the documented Chrome flow, not proof that every Windows build or browser has identical controls.

On Windows 11, reviewing file and link types matters because the system may present associations separately. Make sure the types you want to open in the new browser are assigned as intended; do not assume one selection has changed every association you care about.

Verify the change and keep a fallback

After setting the default, test links from several different apps, such as an email program, a messaging app, and a document. Confirm that they open in the browser you selected. Then work through the acceptance checklist you made: inspect imported data, try key extensions, and complete the essential site tests.

Keep the previous browser installed and accessible while you verify the new setup. If an important workflow does not work, use the old browser for that task and revisit the relevant import, sync, site, or system-default setting. Once the new browser handles the tasks you depend on, you can decide whether to retain or remove the old one; changing the default alone does not require removing it.

Compare candidates against your actual requirements

If you are choosing between more than one browser, compare the same practical criteria for each candidate on your own devices. Vendor documentation can establish that a feature is offered, but the migration and settings information described here is not an independent speed test, security audit, or exhaustive compatibility benchmark.

Decision area What to verify for each candidate
Migration coverage Which categories it can import from your current browser on your platform, and which require a separate export or manual move.
Sync fit Whether it supports your devices, which account is involved, and which data categories you can choose to sync.
Privacy controls How to control sign-in, sync, tracking protection, personalization, and data sharing; distinguish vendor descriptions from independent evidence.
Workflow compatibility Whether your essential sites, extensions, authentication methods, and accessibility tools work in your real setup.
Default control Whether your operating system version and region let you select the browser as the default, and whether any file or link associations need separate review.

A candidate that imports more categories may still require manual fixes, while a candidate with the sync choices you want may not support a particular extension or site workflow. Make the decision from verified tasks and settings, not a single overall “best browser” label.
