How to Report a Police Speed Trap or Road Hazard in Waze

To report a police sighting in Waze, tap Report > Police, choose a subtype if one is available and appropriate, then submit. For a road problem, tap Report > Hazard and choose the matching type. Report only incidents you have seen in real time, and place the report as close as possible to the actual location.

Report a police sighting or speed trap

Waze’s documented reporting category is Police; its help instructions do not describe a separate speed-trap-only reporting flow. Use the Police category for a police sighting, then select a more specific option only if it fits the situation and appears in your version of the app. “Speed trap” is a familiar way to describe why someone might report a police sighting, but it is not a separate category in the documented instructions.

To submit a report, open Waze and tap Report. Choose Police. If a more specific choice is offered and accurately describes what you observed, select Mobile camera, Hidden, or Other side. Then tap Report, or wait a few seconds for Waze to send the report automatically.

The subtype choices are not available in every country. If none appears, or you are not sure which one fits, use the Police category rather than guessing at a more specific report. Do not choose a subtype simply because it sounds close: a report is most useful when it reflects what you actually saw. Waze documents this flow in its Help page, “Report police sightings.”

For example, if you see a police presence and the app offers only the general Police choice, submit that category if you can do so safely. If a subtype appears but does not match the sighting, do not force the report into it. The instructions do not provide a different speed-trap workflow or guarantee that every subtype is available in every app version or location.

Report a road hazard

Use Hazard for a road issue, then choose the type that best describes what you can see. Waze lists these options:

  • Roadworks
  • Car on shoulder
  • Broken traffic light
  • Pothole
  • Object

Open Waze, tap Report, and then tap Hazard. Select the matching hazard type if it is offered and fits the situation. Tap Report to submit, or wait a few seconds for automatic submission.

The category names are practical distinctions, not a reason to report something you cannot identify. A pothole fits the pothole option; an object in the roadway fits Object; and a vehicle stopped on the shoulder fits Car on shoulder. Roadworks and a broken traffic light have their own named choices. If the event does not fit a listed type or that type is not offered, do not select a mismatched category just to make a report.

The documented flow applies to the app and vehicle interfaces listed on Waze’s “Report road hazards” Help page. The exact categories and interface may not appear identically in every location or release. If a particular button or hazard type is absent, that does not mean you should substitute a different report type. Use a suitable choice only when it is available and accurately describes the current situation.

Choose between tapping and voice reporting

Manual reporting is the documented route for Police and Hazard categories: tap Report, pick the category, choose a subtype or hazard type when appropriate, and submit. Where available, Talk to report lets you describe a road event in ordinary language instead of selecting a category first. Waze gives examples such as “I’m stuck in heavy traffic” and “There’s a police officer up ahead.”

The choice is mainly about the input method and availability. With manual reporting, you can select the Police or Hazard category and, where offered, a specific type. With Talk to report, you speak a plain-language description. Voice reporting may be useful when it is enabled and supported, but it is not available in every country and does not replace the need to report only something you have actually observed. If you cannot confidently describe the event or cannot use the feature safely, wait rather than send an uncertain report.

Set up Talk to report on a phone

  1. In Waze, open Settings > Voice and sound and enable Talk to report.
  2. Allow microphone access if Waze prompts you.
  3. Tap the Talk to report icon and describe what is happening.

Waze says Talk to report may not be available in every country and is not currently supported on Android Automotive. Its Help page, “Talk to Waze to report what’s on the road,” describes the feature and setup. The instructions describe enabling the feature on a phone; they do not promise that the same setup or controls appear on every platform.

Whether using voice or tapping, make a report only when you can do so safely; do not handle the app while driving. Do not treat voice input as permission to report something from memory or based on an unverified tip: Waze’s guidance is to report incidents seen in real time. A concise, accurate description is more useful than a speculative one.

Make reports useful and correct stale alerts

Waze advises reporting only incidents seen in real time and placing each report as close as possible to the actual incident. In practice, the key distinction is between something you are observing now and something you heard about, passed long ago, or cannot confirm. A report about a current police sighting or hazard gives other Wazers timely information; an old or uncertain report risks presenting outdated information as current.

Location matters as much as category. Waze’s instruction is to report as close to the actual incident as possible, rather than treating a general area as precise enough. If the event is farther along the road, do not report it as though it were where you are now. The Help instructions do not describe a separate map-placement procedure, so follow the controls that appear in your version of Waze and make the report only when you can associate it with the real location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A report’s display time varies according to other Wazers’ reactions. That means a report does not necessarily stay visible for a fixed, guaranteed period; its duration responds to feedback. If you pass an alert and the incident is no longer there, tap Not there. Waze says this reduces how long the report remains displayed.

Not there is the appropriate response when an existing alert appears stale, not a way to edit the original report’s category or location. If you see a pothole report but the pothole is no longer present, for example, feedback helps reduce the time that alert remains visible. If a new hazard exists nearby, that is a separate observation: report it only if you can do so in real time, choose the matching Hazard type, and place it near the actual event.

Because Waze says report visibility changes with other users’ reactions, do not assume that an alert will vanish immediately when conditions change. Use Not there when you have direct reason to believe the report is no longer accurate. Likewise, do not treat an alert still appearing on the map as proof that the incident is still present; it may simply not yet have received enough feedback to reduce its display time.

Reporting frequency and username visibility

Waze recommends limiting reports to once per minute to reduce spam and incorrect reports. This is service guidance, not a measured statistic about the ideal reporting interval in every circumstance. Avoid sending repeated reports of the same event or rapidly adding reports that you have not independently observed. A report should be a useful, current contribution rather than a stream of guesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waze’s police-report guidance says suspected excessive reporting can trigger temporary reporting blocks, with longer blocks after repeated flags. Waze describes this as part of its published help guidance; it is not a guarantee about how every individual case will be handled. The practical takeaway is to report sparingly, accurately, and only when you are observing an incident in real time. Do not assume that a report is harmless simply because the app allows you to submit it.

Your username appears on a police report added to the map and is visible to other users, according to Waze Help. Keep that visibility in mind before submitting a police report. The cited guidance specifically discusses the username on a police report; it should not be stretched into a claim about anonymity or the visibility of every other kind of report.

What happens if your connection drops?

Waze’s police and hazard reporting Help pages say that if the connection drops while you are reporting, the app saves the location and report and submits it after reconnection. That guidance is specific to a connection drop during reporting; it is not a promise that Waze reporting works offline or that every report entered without a connection will be sent later.

Waze’s general “About Waze” page says that without a connection to Waze servers, users cannot report hazards and Waze does not cache reports or map issues for later. These statements describe different circumstances: the reporting pages address a connection dropping during the reporting process, while the general page warns that offline reporting is not generally supported. Do not rely on an offline report being queued. If the app is offline before you report, wait until the connection returns and check the app rather than assuming the report was sent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even when the specific reconnection guidance applies, the source does not say that a driver should continue interacting with the app while driving. Stay focused on the road; use the reporting controls only when it is safe to do so. If you cannot tell whether a report went through, avoid creating repeated reports without checking, since Waze advises limiting reporting frequency and discourages incorrect or excessive reports.

Quick checks if a report option is missing

  • A Police subtype is absent: Mobile camera, Hidden, and Other side are not offered in every country. Use a subtype only when it appears and accurately describes what you observed. Otherwise, use Police rather than guessing.
  • A hazard type is absent: Category availability can vary by location or release. Choose a fitting option if shown; do not force a mismatched category. The documented choices include Roadworks, Car on shoulder, Broken traffic light, Pothole, and Object.
  • Talk to report is unavailable: The feature may not be available in your country and is not supported on Android Automotive. The documented phone setup is under Settings > Voice and sound, with microphone permission if prompted.
  • The connection dropped during reporting: Police and hazard reporting guidance says the in-progress report is saved and sent after reconnection, but offline reporting is not generally supported. Do not assume a report made without a connection will be cached.
  • An alert is outdated: Tap Not there to reduce the time it remains on the map. Its display duration varies with Wazer reactions.
  • You are unsure what you saw: Waze recommends reporting incidents seen in real time. Skip an uncertain report rather than selecting a category or subtype that may mislead other users.
