Before switching to a fiber internet provider, confirm that fiber is installable at your exact address, compare the plan’s full cost and typical performance, verify equipment and installation requirements, and coordinate activation before you cancel your current service. The FCC National Broadband Map is a useful US screening tool, but the provider’s address-specific offer and order terms are what you need to confirm.
Confirm fiber availability at your exact address
Search your service address on the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows providers reporting service at a location, the reported technology—such as fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless—and maximum advertised speeds. The map is based on provider submissions, so a listing is not an installation commitment or a guarantee of the speeds your household will experience.

Use the map to narrow your options, then ask each provider to verify the exact address, installation eligibility, available plan, and any construction or installation costs. If the map appears wrong, the FCC provides a challenge process. Check the map’s data vintage as well: provider filings are made twice a year, and the map offers an as-of date selector.

Compare the full price, not just the promotion
Read the provider’s FCC Broadband Facts label, then check its linked terms and the order summary. The label is designed to make key plan details easier to compare, but taxes, optional services, discounts, and contract terms can affect what you actually pay.

- Monthly price: Note the introductory price, how long it lasts, and the regular price afterward. Check conditions for autopay, paperless billing, bundles, or using your own equipment, including what the price becomes if a discount ends.
- Contract and cancellation: Check whether a contract is required, its length, and any applicable early termination fee.
- One-time and recurring charges: Look for installation, activation, equipment, deposit, and other provider fees. Check the full terms for local government taxes, which may vary by location.
- Data terms: Check whether the plan includes a data allowance and what happens if you exceed it, including additional charges or service reductions.
Compare the new offer with your current bill and the old provider’s cancellation terms. The headline rate alone does not show the cost of the switch or the price after an introductory period.
Match speeds and latency to how your household uses the connection
Compare the plan’s typical download speed, upload speed, and latency in its Broadband Facts label. Upload performance can matter for video calls, sending large files, and backing up photos; latency can affect responsiveness in online games and calls. Choose based on the household’s actual uses rather than treating the largest download-speed number as the only measure.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The FCC map reports maximum advertised speeds submitted by providers, not a household-specific speed guarantee. Ask the provider what performance it reports for the address, and compare those answers with the typical speeds and latency disclosed for the plan.

Fiber equipment arrangements differ by provider. Ask what will be installed—such as an optical network terminal (ONT), gateway, or router—and whether the router is included, rented, or optional. If you want to use your own router, confirm that the provider supports it and ask what connection type and configuration it requires. Check the label and order terms for equipment charges and any discount tied to customer-owned equipment.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Do not buy a router or other device on the assumption that one model works for every fiber service. The provider may supply or specify equipment, and the right Wi-Fi setup depends on your home.

Coordinate activation and cancellation to avoid a gap
Provider cancellation procedures differ, so check your current agreement and ask support about its billing cycle and final bill before choosing a date. Confirm whether it requires notice, bills through a full cycle or prorates the final bill, and sets a deadline for returning equipment.
- Confirm the new provider’s address-specific order, installation date, charges, and equipment details.
- Arrange installation and activation, then test the new connection.
- Once the new service works, cancel the old service according to its terms. If you cannot overlap service, ask both providers about timing before committing to a cancellation date.
- Return rented equipment by the stated deadline and keep the receipt or other proof of return.
Keep the new order confirmation, Broadband Facts label, bills, support messages, cancellation confirmation, and equipment-return records. After activation, compare your first bill with the label and order summary. If an issue persists, contact the provider using the support information on its label or order documents. The FCC Complaint Center accepts internet complaints covering availability, billing, equipment, privacy, and speed, including latency.
Do not count on the expired ACP discount
The FCC says the Affordable Connectivity Program’s monthly broadband discount ended June 1, 2024. It also warns that some websites may still advertise enrollment in the ended program. Do not include ACP in your budget or submit sensitive information to a site claiming it can enroll you.
