Before switching phone carriers, check five things in order: coverage where you actually use your phone, the full cost of leaving and joining, how your data and hotspot work, whether your phone is unlocked and compatible, and how to move your number without interrupting service. A low advertised price or an “unlimited” label alone does not tell you whether a plan will work for you.
How should you compare phone carriers?
Compare providers against your locations, phone, usage and account—not against a generic “best carrier” ranking. Use the same number of lines and device assumptions for every quote, and consider both recurring costs and one-time switching costs.

- Check coverage at home, work, school, along your commute, during regular travel and in any rural or remote places you rely on.
- Calculate the full cost of the new plan and any remaining obligations to your current provider.
- Read the data terms, including high-speed data, hotspot limits and network management.
- Confirm your phone can move by checking its unlock status and compatibility with the new network.
- Port your number through the new carrier and keep the old service active until the transfer completes.
How do you compare carrier coverage?
Start with the FCC National Broadband Map. It lets consumers compare providers’ reported 3G, 4G and 5G mobile coverage for an area. The FCC cautions that its mobile map does not show indoor availability: it models expected outdoor or in-vehicle service, and actual reception can vary with the phone, terrain and cell-site capacity.

If available, try a carrier trial or eSIM, or ask someone using that network to test in your home, workplace and usual routes. Maps are useful for narrowing options, not a promise of reliable indoor or remote service.

What fees will you owe if you switch?
Compare the bill rather than the headline plan price. The wireless Consumer Code disclosure identifies categories to examine, including access charges, activation or start fees, taxes and government charges, carrier-retained surcharges, late fees, allowances, network practices and contract terms.
For each provider, write down the recurring plan charge and any one-time charges. Ask whether an advertised price depends on autopay, paperless billing, multiple lines or a trade-in, and verify the conditions on the current plan page. Include costs tied to your existing account, such as a device installment balance, termination balance or promotional credits you may lose by leaving. The result should reflect your line count and device situation, not a price advertised for different assumptions.

Does unlimited data mean unlimited high-speed data?
No. “Unlimited” does not by itself tell you how much data stays at high speed, whether hotspot use is included, or how congestion affects service. Terms vary by plan and can change, so check the current terms for the specific plan rather than relying on a carrier-wide label.

These are different kinds of limits: a hard cap, an overage charge, reduced speed after an allowance and lower priority during congestion do not mean the same thing. Will your phone work with another carrier?
Check the exact handset, not just its brand or the fact that it is unlocked. Unlocking can allow a phone to be used with another provider, but it does not guarantee compatibility with that provider’s network. Confirm compatibility for the specific model with the prospective carrier before switching.
If your current provider locks the phone, ask whether it can be unlocked and what conditions apply to your device. The FCC’s consumer guidance on cell phone unlocking explains why unlocking matters, but it does not determine eligibility for a particular handset. Also check any device balance or promotional credits that may be affected by leaving; if the phone cannot move with you, include a replacement in your cost comparison.

Can you keep your number if you switch carriers?
Generally, yes, if you move to a new provider in the same geographic area. The FCC says, “If you switch service providers and remain in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number.” Start the transfer with the new carrier and follow its current instructions.

Keep the old account and service active until the new provider confirms that the port is complete; cancelling first can disrupt the transfer. The new carrier may ask for details such as your phone number, account number, ZIP code and account passcode if applicable. Requirements can vary, so use the receiving carrier’s current porting directions and make sure the submitted account information matches your existing account.

Porting your number does not erase money owed to the old provider. FCC guidance says a carrier cannot delay or refuse a port solely because you owe an outstanding balance or termination fee, but you remain responsible for applicable charges. Review the final bill for any device balance, prorated service, termination charge or other amount due.
What to do before you commit
Use this short checklist before authorizing a switch:
Quick Recap
- Compare FCC and carrier coverage maps for the places you actually use your phone; seek a real-world test where indoor or remote service is important.
- Get the full price for the same lines and device assumptions, including fees, taxes, account balances and any credits you could forfeit.
- Confirm the plan’s high-speed data, hotspot, roaming and congestion-management terms.
- Verify the exact phone’s unlock status and compatibility with the prospective carrier.
- Ask the new carrier to initiate the port, keep old service active through completion, and check the old provider’s final bill afterward.
