Before choosing a set, verify the board’s pitch, the connector type at each end, and the cable’s specifications. Many hobby leads use 2.54 mm (0.1-inch) spacing, but that does not guarantee they will fit every similar-looking board or suit every electrical application.
What are Dupont wires?
They are insulated jumper wires terminated with connector ends for temporary or semi-permanent circuit connections. In maker listings, “Dupont” is often generic shorthand rather than proof of a particular manufacturer, connector family, or electrical rating. Adafruit describes its 20 cm, 16-pin cable as a generic cable for common header connections.

A frequently sold hobby format has 2.54 mm (0.1-inch) pitch, the center-to-center spacing between adjacent contacts. But products vary: Adafruit’s cited cable specifies AWG 24 conductors, while a BerryBase 40-core female-to-female set specifies AWG 28. The label alone tells you neither wire gauge nor construction.

Jumper leads are useful for connecting development boards to compatible breadboards, headers, breakout boards, sensors, and modules while prototyping. They let you change a circuit without soldering every connection. Bundled leads help keep parallel connections together, and some multiwire cables can be separated into individual conductors when a project needs fewer wires or a different arrangement.
#1 Best Overall
- Three Connector Types In One Kit: Includes 40 male-to-male, 40 male-to-female and 40 female-to-female jumper wires for connecting breadboards, female sockets, male headers, sensors, displays and controller modules during temporary prototyping
- 20 cm Length With Separable Ribbons: Each 8 in lead reaches across breadboards and nearby modules without excessive slack; use the 40-wire ribbons as grouped buses or peel off smaller sections and individual wires to match your project layout
- Color-Code Circuits & Troubleshoot Faster: Multicolored insulation makes power, ground, clock, data and control paths easier to identify during LED projects, sensor tests, classroom labs and repeated electronics experiments
- 2.54 mm Connections For Common Headers: Male pins fit compatible 0.1 in female sockets and breadboards, while female ends fit compatible 0.1 in male headers; insert connectors straight and check continuity if a signal becomes intermittent
- Copper-Clad Aluminum With PVC Insulation: The leads are designed for temporary low-voltage signal prototyping rather than mains or high-current wiring; they are not pure-copper wire, automotive jumper cables or a crimp-connector kit
That convenience is not the same as a durable or keyed wiring harness. Adafruit notes that its cited cable has no latch or key, so it can be reversed or misaligned. For applications exposed to vibration, enclosed machinery, or safety-critical power, use a connector system specified for that environment instead of assuming a generic jumper is suitable.
How to choose a compatible set
- Verify pitch. Check the board or module documentation, or measure the center-to-center distance between adjacent pins. A 2.54 mm jumper set is not established as compatible with a different pitch, even if the connectors look close.
- Match both ends. Male ends typically connect to sockets; female ends accept pins. Choose male-to-male, male-to-female, or female-to-female based on the actual connection points at both ends, not just the board name.
- Check pin count and separability. Choose a bundle with enough conductors for the header or signals you need. If you expect to split it into single leads, confirm the product is separable.
- Choose length and gauge for the build. Allow enough length for routing without excess slack, and read the product listing for conductor gauge. Examples on the market differ, including the AWG 24 Adafruit cable and AWG 28 BerryBase cable cited above.
- Check orientation before applying power. With an unkeyed connector, inspect polarity and alignment each time you connect it. Marking one side can help avoid reversing a lead.
- Confirm ratings for the exact product and use. Consult documentation for current, voltage, temperature, insulation, and intended environment. Do not infer these limits from the word “Dupont.”
Electrical ratings are product-specific
Specifications for named connector families illustrate why a universal rating would be misleading. TE Connectivity lists its AMPMODU Mod IV/V wire connectors at 2.54 mm centerline, accepting 32–20 AWG wire, with a maximum family current rating of 4.3 A. Its page for the specific AMPMODU contact 102316-5 gives a maximum contact current rating of 3 A. Those values apply to the named TE products, not every cable sold as Dupont-style.

A retailer’s rating for a particular kit is also not a general rating for this category. For example, Compel’s 2.54 mm kit listing gives limits for that kit; confirm them against its downloadable specification before relying on them in a design. The correct current or voltage limit for a finished connection depends on its specific wire, terminal, housing, and application.

When a custom crimped lead makes sense
Buy a ready-made jumper set when you need quick prototype connections. For custom leads, treat the terminal, housing, wire gauge, and crimp tool as a matched system: compatibility depends on the terminal family and the supported wire range. A kit’s stated rating or included tool does not automatically apply to unrelated connector parts.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 1550PCS Dupont Connector Kit includes a variety of connectors: single row pin headers, bent pin headers, crimp pin connector housings, male and female crimp pins for wires.
- The housing components are injection molded Nylon66,UL 94V-0. These thermoplastics are scientifically proven to resist UV-radiation than the normal plastics, ensuring that the connectors are well-protected, reducing the chances of early degradation and increased cycles/minute of the connector subjected to harsh environments.
- Dupont 2.54mm pitch wire-to-wire connector in a complete package including the male housing, female/receptacle housing, female terminal and male terminal, all manufactured with precision-fitting and durability ensuring accurate mating.
- The electrical interfaces are fully sealed using a shrouded-header for use applications with high levels of moisture. The shroud helps meet the low smoke, toxicity and flammability requirements of almost all industries.
- It offers a crimp style lock and a configuration which prevents users from inverted insertion. It is well-engineered to be air-tight, preventing oxygen and moisture from reaching the metals, causing corrosion.
