What to Check Before Switching Internet Providers in Nebraska

Check your exact Nebraska address, compare the full cost and terms of each plan, confirm equipment compatibility, and understand cancellation and discount rules before switching internet providers.

Before switching home internet in Nebraska, verify service at your exact address, compare each plan’s full price and terms, and confirm the new provider’s equipment and installation details. Then check your current provider’s cancellation and equipment-return requirements. The Nebraska Broadband Map is a useful first check, but only the provider can confirm whether it will serve your address.

How do I compare internet providers at my Nebraska address?

  1. Search your exact address on the Nebraska Broadband Map. It shows location details and reported availability. Its colors classify the fastest reported terrestrial broadband tier at a location: blue means at least 100 Mbps down and 100 Mbps up; green means between 100/25 and 100/100; yellow means between 25/3 and 100/20; and red means 25/3 Mbps or slower. These are map thresholds, not a promise of a particular provider’s plan or the speeds you will experience at home.
  2. Confirm service directly with each provider. Ask whether it serves the precise address, what connection technology it offers there, and what installation dates are available. Map results are a starting point, not an order confirmation. If an FCC map listing or location appears wrong, follow the Nebraska Broadband Office’s instructions for challenging FCC map data, then still confirm serviceability with the company.
  3. Compare realistic options, not just the headline download speed. Depending on the address, offers may use fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, or satellite. Compare disclosed download and upload performance, latency where provided, data allowance and overage terms, and installation lead time. No single technology or provider is established as available at every Nebraska address.

What should I compare in the plan price and broadband label?

Review the provider’s broadband label for each offer. The FCC label framework is intended to make key terms easier to compare, including price, performance, data, and equipment details. Read the label alongside the provider’s current offer and terms.

What to check Questions to ask
Price over time What is the standalone monthly price? Is there an introductory rate, how long does it last, and what is the price afterward? Are there bundle conditions or discounts that change the amount?
Recurring and one-time charges Are there equipment, installation, activation, or other recurring or one-time charges? Are taxes included or additional?
Speed and performance What download and upload performance does the label disclose? Does it provide latency information? Will the plan suit the household’s needs?
Data terms Is there a monthly data allowance? What happens if it is exceeded, and what overage terms apply?
Equipment What equipment fees apply? Is customer-owned equipment permitted, and where can you check the provider’s list of approved devices?
Contract and exit terms Is a specified service commitment required? What is the contract length and any early termination fee?

Compare the ongoing price as well as any introductory price; a promotional amount alone does not tell you what the service will cost after the promotion. In its Broadband Consumer Labels order, FCC 22-86, paragraph 30, the Federal Communications Commission said consumers should know whether a label price requires a commitment and whether switching or ending service could trigger an early termination fee.

Will my current modem or router work with the new provider?

Ask the incoming provider whether your modem, router, or gateway is supported for the specific service and plan, whether it permits customer-owned equipment, and whether any part of your setup must be rented or supplied by the provider. A Wi-Fi router may not replace a required modem or gateway. Check the provider’s permitted-equipment information and account for equipment charges before ordering.

What should I check before I cancel my current internet service?

  • Review your current agreement for a remaining contract term, early termination fee, final-bill details, and any notice requirements.
  • Ask how and when rented equipment must be returned. Keep the cancellation confirmation and the equipment-return receipt.
  • Do not assume that placing a new order cancels the old service. Ask both companies what action is required to end or start service.
  • If an internet gap would matter, arrange for the new service to activate before requesting the old service to end, allowing for installation lead time. This reduces the risk of a gap but does not guarantee a start date.

Nebraska Revised Statutes 86-205 and 86-206 address authorized changes and written confirmation for specified basic local exchange and intra/inter-LATA interexchange telephone services. They are not a general broadband cancellation or provider-switching rule; for standalone internet, follow the providers’ own terms.

Could NTAP or Lifeline discounts continue after I switch?

If you rely on a low-income service discount, ask the prospective provider whether it participates in federal Lifeline and Nebraska’s Nebraska Telephone Assistance Program (NTAP), and whether you need to take new enrollment steps. NTAP supplements federal Lifeline for qualifying residents. The Nebraska Public Service Commission says many landline and wireless providers offer discounts, but not all telephone and internet companies do; contact your company or the PSC’s NTAP information page to find an authorized provider. Do not assume every fixed broadband provider participates or that a benefit automatically transfers.

A practical switching checklist

  1. Search the exact service address on Nebraska’s broadband map; challenge an apparent FCC map error through the state’s instructions when appropriate.
  2. For each realistic option, review its broadband label and offer. Note the regular and promotional prices and promotion duration, post-promotion price, performance, data and overage terms, equipment rules and fees, other recurring or one-time charges, and contract or termination terms.
  3. Ask the prospective provider to confirm address availability, connection technology, total monthly price after discounts expire, installation date, equipment requirements, and compatibility of your current modem or router.
  4. Check your existing agreement and ask the current provider about cancellation, final charges, and equipment-return deadlines and process.
  5. If uninterrupted service matters, schedule the new connection to start before ending the old one, allowing for installation lead time.
  6. If you use Lifeline or NTAP, confirm participation and any enrollment steps with the new provider before switching.
