You can check whether AI-company crawlers requested pages from your site by inspecting its public robots.txt files and searching server, CDN, or hosting access logs for provider-specific bot identifiers. Those checks show your stated crawler preferences and observed requests; they do not prove that a company trained a model on a page or used it in an answer.
What you can—and cannot—verify
There are three different questions, and they require different evidence:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Did an agent request a page? Access logs can show a request, its path, timestamp, response status, claimed user agent, and source IP. IP validation can increase confidence in the agent’s identity.
- What does your site ask crawlers to do? The public
robots.txtfile expresses preferences for compliant crawlers. It does not record past visits or prevent access like authentication would. - Was the page used later? A crawler request, a robots rule, or a referral report does not establish that content was retained, added to training data, or used in a particular response.
A missing log entry does not prove a page was never accessed or used. Logs may not cover every infrastructure layer or retain older requests, and content may reach a company through another agent or source. There is no universal site-owner test in the cited provider documentation for all downstream use.
How to audit crawler activity
1. Inspect robots.txt for every hostname
Open the public robots.txt file for each relevant hostname and subdomain, then look for provider-specific User-agent groups and their Disallow or Allow rules. A rule on one hostname does not automatically cover every subdomain. Anthropic advises site owners to apply rules to each subdomain they intend to cover; OpenAI documents separate controls for its search and training crawlers. See the OpenAI crawler documentation, Anthropic crawler guidance, and Cloudflare’s overview of AI content controls.

You will never forget your password log-in details again with this password keeper.
- ALPHABETICAL A-Z TABS FOR QUICK ACCESS: Alphabetical tabs design allows you to store your passwords alphabetically so you can find what you want faster, no more annoying searches!
- ANONYMOUS WITHOUT ANY TITLE: On the outside, this password notebook organizer looks just like those writing journals, there is no title listed on the cover, so no one would know it's a password book. But we still recommend keeping the internet password logbook in a safe place such as a locked drawer or a shelf full of books.

- PREMIUM QUALITY & PERFECT MEDIUM SIZE: This password journal comes with a high-quality leatherette hardcover, an elastic band, pen holder, ribbon bookmarker, and inner accordion pocket. It measures 5.2 inches wide and 7.6 inches long, which is the perfect size for your needs.
Robots rules are a request to compliant crawlers, not access control. They cannot tell you whether a crawler visited before the rule was added.
2. Search the logs your site actually keeps
Depending on your setup, useful records may be in origin-server, CDN, web application firewall (WAF), hosting-provider, or analytics/log-drain logs. Search for the provider’s documented user-agent token. For each matching request, preserve:

- Timestamp and requested URL or path
- HTTP status code
- Full user-agent string
- Source IP address
Keep the status code when assessing what happened. A 200 response is different evidence from a 403, a challenge, or an error; do not count every matching log line as a successful page read. Cloudflare maintains a reference to bot categories and identifiers for operators including OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google, Meta, Amazon, ByteDance, and Common Crawl: Cloudflare bot reference.

User-agent strings can be spoofed. When a provider publishes crawler IP ranges, compare the request’s source IP with its current published ranges. OpenAI provides crawler IP references in its bot documentation; Anthropic points site owners to its crawler IP list and guidance; Google documents crawler verification and IP ranges in its crawler reference. IP matching improves confidence but still establishes a request, not downstream use of the content.

4. Classify the request before interpreting it
Do not call every AI-related request a training scrape. Providers distinguish background crawlers intended for training-related collection from search crawlers and page fetches triggered by a person’s request. The user-agent token and the provider’s current documentation help identify which activity a log entry represents.
5. Check referrals separately
Referral analytics can show visits attributed to a product, not background crawling or training. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com in its publisher FAQ. Cloudflare also lists referrer domains by operator in its bot reference. Some app referrals may omit a Referer header, so no recorded referral does not demonstrate that a company did not access or use the content. Cloudflare’s report on AI training controls discusses this limitation.

What the main AI crawler identifiers mean
| Provider and identifier | Documented role | What a matching request tells you |
|---|---|---|
OpenAI GPTBot |
Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI generative AI foundation models. | A validated request shows crawler access, not whether the page was actually included in training. OpenAI says disallowing GPTBot indicates the content should not be used for training; logs cannot reveal whether earlier access or another source supplied it. |
OpenAI OAI-SearchBot |
Helps surface websites in ChatGPT search results. | Indicates search-oriented crawling, not a training event. OpenAI says its setting is independent of GPTBot. |
OpenAI ChatGPT-User |
May fetch a page in response to a user action, including some Custom GPT use. | Indicates user-triggered retrieval rather than automatic background crawling. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to these actions. |
Anthropic ClaudeBot |
Collects web content that could potentially contribute to model training. | Indicates a training-oriented crawler request, not proof that the page entered training data. Anthropic says restrictions signal exclusion of future materials. |
Anthropic Claude-SearchBot |
Improves search-result quality by navigating and analyzing web content. | Indicates search-related activity, distinct from ClaudeBot’s training-oriented collection. |
Anthropic Claude-User |
Retrieves websites when people ask Claude questions. | Indicates a user-directed fetch, not a background training crawl. |
Google Google-Extended |
A robots.txt control token for specified use of Google-crawled content in Gemini training and grounding. | It has no separate HTTP user-agent string, so it will not appear as a distinct bot in ordinary request logs. Google says it does not affect Google Search inclusion or rankings. |
Provider roles and policies can change. Check current official documentation before interpreting a new or unfamiliar identifier. OpenAI describes its crawler distinctions in its bot documentation and explains publisher controls in its FAQ. Anthropic’s Privacy Center guidance, dated April 7, 2026, covers its three bot roles, robots.txt, and subdomains. Google’s crawler reference explains Google-Extended and its relationship to Google Search.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose controls by the outcome you want
Training exclusion, search visibility, and user-triggered retrieval are not interchangeable. Decide which outcome matters before changing rules: a restriction aimed at search or user-fetch agents may reduce discovery or retrieval in that product, while training and search controls may be independent. OpenAI documents the separation between GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, and Google says Google-Extended does not affect Google Search inclusion. Review the current OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google guidance before editing your rules.

How to interpret aggregate crawl-to-referral figures
Cloudflare reported aggregate crawl-to-referral ratios for June 2025 of 1,700:1 for OpenAI and 73,000:1 for Anthropic. These are Cloudflare’s historical estimates, calculated from relevant HTML requests and referrals—not measurements of any individual website or evidence of training use. Cloudflare cautioned that native-app traffic may lack a Referer header, which can affect the estimates. The figures provide context about the difference between crawler activity and attributable referrals, not a way to determine what happened to a particular page.
