Before replacing a Mac with a Windows PC, make an inventory of your hardware, applications, files, accounts and recurring costs. Then verify the exact Windows 11 computer against your workload—not just the minimum specification—and test how each essential app, peripheral and service will work. If you mean running Windows on the Mac you already own, the processor changes the answer: Intel Macs may use Apple’s Boot Camp workflow for Windows 10, while Apple silicon Macs rely on ARM virtualization or a cloud PC, each with limitations.
Start by defining what “switching” means
There are two different projects people describe as moving from macOS to Windows:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Buying a Windows 11 laptop or desktop: You move your work, files and peripherals to a new Windows computer.
- Running Windows on the existing Mac: You keep the Mac hardware and add Windows through Boot Camp, virtualization or a streamed cloud PC. Compatibility depends heavily on whether the Mac has an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
Microsoft Support describes Windows 11 as running best on “a PC designed for Windows.” That makes a purpose-built PC the more straightforward route when you need maximum Windows application and driver compatibility. Keeping the Mac can reduce hardware disruption, but it does not remove operating-system, licensing or application constraints.

Identify the exact model and configuration of the computer you are considering. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Compatibility Cookbook lists the following minimum classes of requirement. The cookbook was last updated on August 23, 2022, so use it as a checklist and confirm current specifications and eligibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool before purchase.

| Requirement | Minimum listed by Microsoft | What to verify for your workload |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit processor | Application vendors’ CPU requirements and the performance needed for your work |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Whether your multitasking, creative, development or virtual-machine workload needs more |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger | Space for Windows, applications, local files, media libraries and future growth |
| Firmware security | TPM 2.0 | That the specific model exposes and supports the required security hardware |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-compatible graphics with WDDM 2.0 | Requirements for games, 3D, video, design and other GPU-accelerated software |
These are minimums, not a recommendation for every buyer. A computer that technically passes may still feel inadequate if you routinely edit large media files, run development environments, use several displays, keep many browser tabs open or work with virtual machines. Check the application vendor’s recommended CPU, RAM, graphics and storage specifications alongside Microsoft’s eligibility test.
Confirm ports, displays and expansion
List every connection your current setup uses: USB devices, Thunderbolt or USB-C docks, displays, Ethernet adapters, card readers, audio interfaces, printers and scanners. Compare the exact ports and display outputs on the Windows computer. A dock that works with a Mac may require a Windows driver, a different cable or a different arrangement of displays. Record the resolution, refresh rate and number of screens you need rather than assuming that a familiar dock will behave identically.
Audit every application and workflow
Create the inventory before you erase or sell the Mac. Include software you open only occasionally, not just the applications on your daily dock.

- Work and personal applications, including specialist, legacy and internally supplied programs.
- Plug-ins, fonts, templates, scripts, macros and command-line tools.
- Games and launchers, with saved-game locations and anti-cheat requirements.
- Printer, scanner, camera, audio-interface, control-surface and other device utilities.
- VPN, security, password-management and backup software.
- Automations tied to Apple services, macOS folders, Shortcuts, Automator or shell scripts.
For each item, record the Windows edition supported, minimum version, sign-in method, license type and location of its data. Ask the developer about Windows 11 support for the exact version you use. A “Windows version available” label does not prove that a particular plug-in, file format, hardware driver or enterprise policy will work.
Pay special attention to Microsoft Office
Microsoft’s current system-requirements page lists Windows 11 for Office 2024 on Windows. Office for Mac is supported on the three most recent macOS versions. Check which Office edition you own, where its entitlement is assigned and whether your subscription or perpetual license includes a Windows installation. Do not assume that an activation currently used on the Mac automatically transfers.
Office licensing uses a Microsoft account or an organizational account. Microsoft also identifies OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint as requirements for its cloud file-management features. If your workflow depends on those features, confirm that the account you will use on Windows has the appropriate access before migration.

Check peripherals by exact model
Make a second list containing the manufacturer, model number, connection type and current driver or firmware for every important peripheral. Verify current Windows drivers and supported connection methods on the manufacturer’s documentation. This matters most for:
- Printers and scanners whose macOS utilities may not have Windows equivalents.
- Audio interfaces, mixers and MIDI hardware that depend on low-latency drivers.
- Docks and adapters that manage multiple displays, Ethernet or charging.
- Specialized input devices, tablets, controllers and measurement equipment.
- NAS, backup and encryption devices that use platform-specific utilities.
If a device is essential to paid work, treat a vendor’s driver-download page and support statement as a purchase prerequisite. Keep the Mac available until you have printed, scanned, recorded or otherwise tested the device on Windows.
Map accounts, subscriptions and licenses
Write down every account that contributes to your workflow: Apple services, email, cloud storage, software subscriptions, work or school identity, password manager, VPN, domain services and two-factor authentication. Note recovery codes and the phone number or authenticator used for sign-in. A migration can fail even when files are intact if you cannot authenticate an application or recover an account.
For each paid application, determine whether the license is:
- Account-based: Sign in on Windows and deactivate the Mac if the service limits active devices.
- Platform-specific: Purchase or request a Windows entitlement if the Mac license cannot be used on Windows.
- Organization-managed: Ask an administrator to assign the Windows application and confirm policy, VPN and device-management requirements.
Budget only after this review. The total is the computer plus any required software, adapters, docks, storage and replacement peripherals, as well as recurring subscriptions. No universal switching cost applies because it depends on the inventory.

Inventory data in the Mac’s internal drive, external drives, cloud folders and application-specific libraries. Mark what is synchronized and what exists only locally. Photos libraries, mail archives, password stores, project catalogs and application settings often require an export or a vendor-specific migration method; copying a visible folder does not guarantee that the new application can open it with its history and metadata.

Use OneDrive when it fits your storage and account
Microsoft documents a OneDrive route for moving files, photos and videos to a new Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. A personal Microsoft account includes 5 GB of free OneDrive storage according to Microsoft Support; check the current allowance and your plan before relying on it.
- On the Mac, locate the OneDrive folder and identify files that have not finished synchronizing.
- Open OneDrive on the web and confirm that the files you expect are present.
- Upload missing files and wait for synchronization to complete before changing computers.
- On the Windows PC, sign in with the same account and allow the files to synchronize.
- Open representative documents, photos and project files on Windows. Check filenames, folder structure and the applications that should open them.
This procedure transfers files; it is not a complete application migration. Keep the original Mac and a second copy of irreplaceable data until the new setup has been checked. Do not delete the Mac’s local copies merely because a cloud folder appears online.
Use external storage when cloud transfer is unsuitable
An external SSD or USB flash drive can provide a manual transfer path for data that exceeds your cloud allowance or should not be uploaded. Format and encryption choices can affect cross-platform readability, so test the drive with a small, noncritical folder on the intended Windows computer first. Copy rather than move the source files, eject the drive safely, and compare file counts and representative files after the transfer.

What Apple silicon virtualization changes
On an M-series Mac, Windows runs as ARM Windows in a virtual environment or is streamed from a cloud PC. Microsoft says a separate Windows 11 Pro license is needed if you do not already have one. Confirm the currently authorized virtualization product version, Windows edition and—where relevant—organizational eligibility before committing.
Check every critical application rather than assuming that an x86 Windows program will behave like its Intel-PC counterpart. Microsoft specifically cautions that ARM Windows limitations can affect some hardware and applications, including those using DirectX 12. Test your actual workload, not just whether Windows starts.
What Boot Camp does—and does not—promise
Apple’s Boot Camp guide, published December 11, 2025, describes installing Windows 10 on listed Intel Macs with Boot Camp Assistant, allocating storage, installing Windows support software and switching operating systems at startup. It lists at least 64 GB of free storage and says 128 GB or more provides the best experience for that installation workflow. It does not establish a general Windows 11 path and does not apply to Apple silicon Macs. Check the current Windows 10 lifecycle and your exact Mac model before relying on it.

Run a controlled test before retiring the Mac
Use a short overlap period in which both computers remain usable. Install the applications that matter most, sign in, connect the essential peripherals and open real working files. Test a complete task from start to finish: for example, import a project, edit it, export the required format, print or upload the result, and restore it from backup. Record errors and resolve them while the Mac is still available.
- Verify two-factor authentication and password-manager access.
- Open older and current files, including files containing links, fonts, macros or plug-ins.
- Check display arrangement, scaling, audio input/output, webcam and sleep/wake behavior.
- Confirm backup jobs, cloud synchronization and recovery of a test file.
- Check that work or school policies, VPN access and required security software function.
Common failure points and recovery actions
A required app has no usable Windows release
Ask the developer about a supported Windows edition, a data-export format or a replacement workflow. If the application is irreplaceable, delay the switch or keep access to the Mac rather than discovering the limitation after migration.
A peripheral connects but lacks features
Install the current Windows driver and firmware, then test every required function. If a dock or adapter is involved, test without it to isolate the fault; a direct connection can distinguish a device problem from a dock-driver problem.
Files appear online but are incomplete
Return to the Mac, check synchronization status and compare the online folder with the local source. Upload missing items, then verify representative files on Windows. Keep the second copy until the comparison is complete.
Activation or sign-in fails
Confirm the account that owns the license, internet activation requirements and any device limit. For work or school software, contact the administrator who assigns the entitlement instead of creating a second personal license.

Windows on Apple silicon cannot run a critical workload
Check whether the failure involves ARM compatibility, a required driver, DirectX 12 or unsupported nested virtualization. A purpose-built Windows PC may be the practical solution when the workload depends on hardware or graphics features that the virtual environment cannot provide.
Use this final go/no-go checklist
- The exact Windows computer passes current Windows 11 eligibility checks and has capacity for your workload.
- Every essential application, plug-in and peripheral has a verified Windows 11 path.
- Licenses, Microsoft or organizational accounts, subscriptions and two-factor authentication are ready.
- Local, external and cloud data has been inventoried, copied and verified.
- A second backup remains untouched.
- Your displays, docks, printers, audio equipment and other essential devices have completed a real-task test.
- You have priced required software, adapters, storage and replacement hardware.
- If keeping the Mac, you have chosen the route appropriate to Intel or Apple silicon and tested its limitations.
Proceed only when the checklist is true for the work you actually do. A Windows PC can simplify compatibility, but the successful switch is determined by the specific applications, devices, accounts and data that make up your current Mac workflow.
