Before renewing or changing VMware coverage, confirm whether you have a perpetual license with Support and Subscription (SnS) or a term subscription, then reconcile the contract against your portal entitlements. The distinction matters: Broadcom says expired SnS does not revoke a perpetual license, but that rule should not be assumed to apply to term subscriptions. Your signed contract and quote determine your own commercial terms.
First, identify what you are renewing
VMware entitlements can follow different rules depending on whether the software is licensed perpetually with separate SnS coverage or supplied as a term subscription.

- Perpetual license plus SnS: SnS is a separate service agreement for support and software updates. Broadcom states that expiration of SnS does not revoke the underlying perpetual software entitlement. Broadcom: Does my perpetual license expire when my SnS contract expires?
- Term subscription: Check the product-specific subscription terms and current entitlement status. The expiration behavior is not established as uniform across all VMware subscription offerings.
Do not infer your renewal rights, continued-use terms, or expiration outcome from another customer’s contract or from the perpetual-license rule. Review your signed contract and ask your Broadcom account manager or reseller to confirm any unclear term.

Reconcile the portal, quote, and contract
In the Broadcom Support Portal, review the entitlement and contract record, then compare it with the renewal quote and signed agreement. Check each of these details:

- Product, version, and edition
- License or subscription quantity
- Contract status and start and end dates
- Site ID and whether your portal account has permission to see the relevant entitlements
Portal visibility can depend on the Site ID and account permissions, so a missing record does not by itself establish that an entitlement is absent. If the portal and paperwork disagree, ask the account manager or reseller to resolve the discrepancy. Keep the renewal contract number or written confirmation of an approved change, particularly while waiting for the portal to reflect it.

Confirm the exact change you want is approved
Extensions, grace periods, seat-count changes, and corrections to a service end date require commercial review. Broadcom directs customers to their account manager or reseller for these requests; Technical Support and Global Customer Assistance (GCA) cannot approve them. Check dates and compatibility before consolidating licenses
If you want to merge subscription licenses, verify the matching criteria before requesting consolidation. Broadcom requires the licenses to have the same product, version, and edition, and their contract end dates must match exactly. Even a one-day difference can prevent a merge. Compare the underlying entitlement dates rather than assuming that two renewals will align because they are close together. If they differ, ask the account manager or reseller whether a commercial change is available; do not assume the portal can override the contract dates.

Review upgrade, downgrade, and product lifecycle limits
Check your version and lifecycle position before renewing or changing coverage. Broadcom says an expired contract prevents license upgrade or downgrade through the portal, supported-version limits apply, and a vSphere downgrade must proceed one version level at a time. Understand what SnS expiration changes
For a perpetual license, Broadcom says the software entitlement remains in place when SnS expires. ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, and running virtual machines continue operating, but the expired SnS no longer provides access to new patches, security updates, and releases, or the ability to open a technical support request under that coverage. Those consequences make expiration a support and security-planning issue even where the perpetual entitlement remains valid. For a term subscription, consult the particular product’s terms and verify the current entitlement status; the perpetual SnS rule does not establish what happens for every subscription product.
Verify the commercial terms directly
Public guidance does not establish an individual customer’s renewal price, discount, quote validity, or eligibility for a particular package. Compare the actual quote and contract for price, duration, covered products, quantity, and negotiated terms, and confirm questions with your account manager or reseller. Do not treat a public support article as a substitute for the signed agreement.
