If you want a Fire TV Stick alternative, start with the Roku Streaming Stick Plus (4K) for a compact stick, the Google TV Streamer (4K) for built-in Ethernet and Google Home integration, or Apple TV 4K if Apple’s ecosystem suits you. For a home media library or Plex Media Server, consider the more specialized NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro. These choices reflect manufacturer-published features, not hands-on testing or an independent performance ranking.

For 4K, Roku says compatible HDMI/HDCP 2.2 hardware is required. The television and content must also support the resolution and HDR format for those features to be used. This stick is the straightforward match when you want a small form factor and HDR10+/HLG cover your needs. [c1]

For a stick with Dolby Vision: Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku says its Streaming Stick 4K adds Dolby Vision and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver over the Streaming Stick Plus. If either feature matters for your TV or placement, compare the two models on Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K page. Dolby Vision requires compatible content and a compatible television. [c2]
For built-in Ethernet: Google TV Streamer (4K)
The Google TV Streamer is a box, not a dongle. Google lists built-in Ethernet, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Thread border-router and Google Home/Matter hub capabilities. It connects to a television or display over HDMI. Google’s comparison page listed a US price of $99.99; confirm the current price on Google’s product page.

Google recommends a 4K television for the best experience and says playback resolution depends on the capabilities shared by the device and TV, as well as the content. A 4K-capable streamer cannot make a 1080p display show 4K. Google also says an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable is needed for optimal performance and is sold separately. [c3]
Match the device to your TV and audio setup
Check resolution and HDR before paying for a 4K model
A streamer’s maximum output is only one part of the chain. The display and the title being streamed also need to support the resolution and HDR format. For Roku’s Streaming Stick Plus, Roku specifies up to 2160p/60 fps and HDR10+/HLG; for Apple TV 4K, Apple lists Dolby Vision up to 2160p/60 fps and HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. The Google TV Streamer lists Dolby Vision. These are format specifications, not a guarantee that every app or title offers those formats. [c1][c3][c4]

Consider Dolby Atmos and the rest of the signal path
Google lists Dolby Atmos for Google TV Streamer, and Apple lists it for Apple TV 4K. To hear Atmos, the content and the audio equipment in your setup must support it as well. If you do not have compatible equipment or content, the format listing alone is not a reason to choose one device over another. [c3][c4]
When Apple TV 4K makes sense
Apple TV 4K is a box option for people already using Apple services or looking for the formats Apple lists. Apple offers a 64GB Wi-Fi configuration and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration. Both list Wi-Fi 6, HDMI 2.1, and the A15 Bionic chip; the product page also lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+/HDR10/HLG, and Dolby Atmos. Check Apple’s specifications for current model details. [c4]

Apple says 4K/HDR streaming requires a compatible 4K/HDR television, and an HDMI cable is sold separately. The two storage/network configurations are distinct choices; choose the Ethernet model if you need that connection rather than assuming both include it. [c4]

When to consider NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro
SHIELD TV Pro is a narrower option for people who want to play local or network-stored media or run Plex Media Server. NVIDIA’s comparison page identifies Plex Media Server and expandable storage as Pro-specific features and lists local/network media playback. It also notes that GeForce NOW requires a subscription. NVIDIA’s page does not establish current inventory, price, or product lifecycle, so verify availability before treating it as a current purchase option: NVIDIA SHIELD comparison. [c5]

A practical checklist before you buy
- Confirm the shape: choose a stick if you want a compact device at the HDMI port; choose a box if its connections or ecosystem features suit your setup.
- Check your TV: identify its resolution, HDR formats, and available HDMI requirements. A streamer cannot upgrade the display’s capabilities.
- Check networking: the Google TV Streamer and Apple TV 4K’s 128GB configuration list Ethernet; the Roku sticks rely on Wi-Fi.
- Check audio: verify that your soundbar or receiver and the content support the audio format you want, such as Dolby Atmos.
- Check apps by country: manufacturer support for a platform does not prove that every service or app is offered in every region.
- Compare total current cost: include any separately sold HDMI cable where relevant, and verify live device prices and availability rather than relying on an older offer.
