What to Check Before Registering a Domain Bundle

Compare the domain’s introductory and renewal prices, check add-on terms, and understand expiration, account ownership and transfer restrictions before checkout.

Before buying a domain bundle, check the exact price and terms for the domain ending you want—not just the headline offer. Record what you will pay now and at renewal, then verify how add-ons, expiration, account ownership, and transfers work. The registrar agreement and checkout disclosures govern the specific offer.

Check the full cost for the exact domain

Prices and bundle contents vary by registrar and domain ending. Compare the amount due at checkout with the regular renewal amount, and check when that renewal price applies. A low introductory price does not establish what later years will cost. ICANN advises prospective registrants to review a registrar’s prices, terms, and renewal conditions.

For each offer you are considering, write down:

  • The domain name and ending, such as .com or another extension.
  • The amount due now and the registration period it covers.
  • The renewal amount and when it will be charged.
  • Any separately priced add-ons and whether their charges recur.

ICANN’s general guidance does not set a universal retail price or specify what a particular registrar’s bundle includes. Check the current checkout page and agreement for the offer in front of you.

Read what the bundle actually includes

A bundle may pair domain registration with hosting or other services, but the word “bundle” alone does not tell you what is included, how long it lasts, or what it costs later. Treat each extra as a separate purchase decision: confirm its price, renewal terms, and cancellation conditions in the offer. Choose it only if it meets a need you have; the existence of a bundle does not make an add-on necessary.

Understand renewal and expiration

A domain generally has to be renewed through its registrar to remain in use. ICANN says a registration period is typically between one and 10 years; this is general context, not a recommendation about which term to buy. Check the offer for the selected term, whether renewal is automatic, when renewal is due, and which account email receives notices.

If you do not renew, the domain may be at risk of temporary or permanent loss. ICANN recommends keeping your contact details current so renewal and expiration notices can reach you. Before checkout, find the registrar’s stated expiration and recovery procedure, including any steps or charges that may apply, rather than assuming every registrar handles an expired domain the same way.

Check transfer restrictions and account control

If you may move the domain to another registrar, check transfer eligibility before registering. ICANN identifies circumstances in which a transfer can be restricted, including within 60 days of initial registration and after certain changes to registrant contact information. Check the applicable registrar terms for the restrictions and any available options.

Also confirm who will control the registrar account and which account holds the domain registration. If a reseller is involved, identify the registrar and understand how you will access and manage the registration. ICANN’s guidance notes that registration terms—including fees, transfers, and renewals—are governed by the agreement between the registrant and registrar.

Use this checkout checklist

  1. Confirm the item: Verify the exact domain name and extension on the checkout page.
  2. Record the price: Note the amount due now, the term it covers, the renewal amount, and when that renewal applies.
  3. Separate the extras: For every add-on, check whether it is included or separately priced, whether its charge recurs, and which terms govern it.
  4. Review renewal settings: Check auto-renewal status, the renewal date, notice timing, and the email address on the account.
  5. Find the expiration procedure: Read what the registrar says happens after expiration and what recovery steps or charges may apply.
  6. Check control and transfer: Confirm who controls the account and review transfer restrictions that could delay a move.
  7. Read the applicable agreement: Compare it with the checkout disclosures for the specific domain and bundle, especially for fees, renewal, and transfer terms.
