Before installing a Skyrim NPC overhaul, confirm your exact game edition and runtime, read that overhaul’s current mod page, and map every other mod that edits the same NPCs. The appearance is controlled by both plugin records and FaceGen mesh and texture files; the plugin that wins the record conflict must agree with the FaceGen assets your mod manager loads. A dark face, missing makeover, or lost dialogue is usually a conflict to inspect—not a problem solved by blindly moving a mod to the bottom of the load order.
1. Identify your Skyrim edition and runtime first
Skyrim is not one fixed target for mod compatibility. The original 32-bit release, Special Edition, and Anniversary Edition installations can use different runtimes, executable versions, SKSE builds, and plugin behavior. Anniversary Edition is primarily a content bundle, but the installed executable runtime still matters to many mods. Write down the edition shown by your game launcher or installation and the exact runtime number before downloading an overhaul.

- Edition: distinguish the original release from Special Edition or an Anniversary Edition installation.
- Runtime: record the full executable version, including the four-part number if your mod manager or utility displays it.
- Platform and installation: note whether the game is running through Steam, another supported PC distribution, or a console. PC overhauls generally depend on tools and file access that console versions do not provide.
- Script extender status: if the overhaul lists an extender or extender plugin as a requirement, verify that its build supports your runtime.
Do not infer compatibility from a similarly named overhaul. Requirements, optional downloads, patches, and incompatibility notes can change between releases and between editions. The only reliable starting point is the current page for the exact overhaul you intend to install.
2. Read the selected overhaul’s page as a set of installation requirements
Open every section of the mod page, not just the description and screenshots. Record what the author says about the following items before enabling any file.

Supported versions and editions
Check the listed game edition and runtime. A page may provide separate files for a classic release and a modern 64-bit release, or it may support only one. If the author does not state support for your runtime, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming the files are interchangeable.
Required files and mods
List mandatory masters, frameworks, assets, and utilities. A dependency can be a plugin, a resource archive, a body or hair asset, or a particular version of another mod. Install requirements first and confirm that your manager sees them as enabled. Do not copy a dependency list from another NPC replacer; two overhauls with similar goals can have completely different requirements.
Optional files and configuration choices
Optional downloads may change which NPCs are covered, provide alternate faces, or add compatibility patches. Decide which variant you want before installation. Installing multiple alternatives for the same NPC without understanding their priority creates an avoidable asset conflict.

Installation and uninstallation instructions
Follow the author’s stated method for archives, loose files, fomod choices, and generated output. If the page tells you to remove an earlier version or to regenerate files, do that before testing. Keep a note of the choices you made so you can reproduce them after a profile change.

Incompatibilities and patches
Read the compatibility section and the comments or change log for updates that affect your edition. A listed patch may forward more than face data: it can preserve an NPC’s AI packages, dialogue, factions, outfits, or other records from another mod. Download only patches that match the specific pair of mods and the versions you are using.
3. Find every mod that touches the same NPCs
An NPC overhaul can conflict with more than another face replacer. Build an overlap list from your enabled plugins and the overhaul’s coverage list.
Appearance overhauls
These are the obvious competitors: another mod may replace the same NPC’s head mesh, hair, tint, brows, scars, or face textures. If both provide FaceGen files for one NPC, one set will overwrite the other in the mod manager’s asset priority. Decide which appearance you actually want for each overlap.

A town overhaul, follower framework, quest mod, or AI package can edit the same NPC record while leaving the face untouched. If the appearance plugin wins the entire record conflict, it may also overwrite behavior or dialogue changes you wanted to keep. Conversely, allowing the behavior plugin to win may select a record whose appearance does not match the FaceGen files supplied by the visual overhaul.

City, settlement, and population mods
Mods that add or substantially edit residents often include NPC records, outfits, inventories, or relationships. Their edits can overlap even when their marketing does not mention “NPC overhaul.” Include them in your conflict review.
Make an overlap worksheet
For each affected NPC, write down the mods that edit the record, the mod that supplies the desired face, and any patch that is supposed to combine them. This simple list prevents a global “put the appearance mod last” rule from damaging unrelated changes.
4. Understand why plugin records and FaceGen assets must agree
An NPC’s appearance is split between data in the plugin and generated files on disk. The plugin record contains the NPC’s appearance-related values and other information. FaceGen supplies the generated head mesh and textures that the game loads for that record. The winning record and the winning FaceGen files therefore have to describe the same version of the NPC.

Plugin order versus asset overwrite order
Your mod manager usually has two separate conflict systems:
- Plugin load order: determines which plugin record wins when multiple plugins edit the same NPC.
- Mod or file priority: determines which loose FaceGen files or archive contents win when multiple mods contain the same paths.
These orders do not automatically tell the same story. If Overhaul A supplies the winning NPC record but Overhaul B overwrites A’s FaceGen files, the game can display a mismatch. With overlapping appearance mods, align the relevant plugin order and asset priority so the intended mod supplies both sides, or use a patch that deliberately combines the records and the correct generated assets.
5. Inspect conflicts before launching the game
A general sorting tool can arrange load order according to rules, but it cannot decide whether you prefer one NPC’s face, dialogue, or AI package. When the overlap list is unclear, inspect the actual records with an xEdit build appropriate to your edition.
- Enable the overhaul and its stated requirements in a test profile or a copy of your profile.
- Start xEdit and allow it to load the plugins. Resolve any missing-master error before reviewing records.
- Find an affected NPC under the non-player-character records and inspect the conflict view.
- Identify which plugin supplies the winning record and note differences in appearance fields, head parts, tint layers, AI packages, dialogue links, factions, outfits, and scripts.
- In your mod manager, inspect the corresponding FaceGen mesh and texture paths. Confirm which mod wins those files.
- Choose a compatibility patch or create a deliberate conflict-resolution patch when you need changes from more than one plugin.
- Save the patch under a new name, place it after the plugins it resolves, and ensure its required masters are enabled.
Do not edit a plugin merely to make a sort order look tidy. The desired outcome is a coherent NPC record plus matching assets, not a universal position for every appearance mod.

If you are deciding among several NPC overhauls, compare the combination you will actually run rather than selecting the mod with the most screenshots.

These are decision criteria, not a ranking. A smaller overhaul with clear patches may be a better fit than a broad one that requires extensive manual forwarding.
7. Install in a controlled sequence
- Back up your profile and saves. Keep a copy of your mod list and load order. Avoid judging a major NPC change from a save that has already baked in unrelated script state.
- Install prerequisites. Add required masters, frameworks, and assets exactly as the mod page specifies.
- Install one overhaul variant. Complete the installer’s options and do not activate alternate files for the same NPC unless the page explains how they interact.
- Apply documented patches. Add patches for your known AI, dialogue, city, follower, or population overlaps. Check that each patch matches the installed versions.
- Set deliberate priorities. Arrange plugin order and file overwrite order so the intended record and FaceGen assets win together.
- Inspect representative conflicts. Review at least one NPC from each overlap group in xEdit before starting the game.
- Launch a test session. Visit affected NPCs in a controlled location and verify appearance, dialogue, packages, and equipment.
Keep the profile reproducible. If you later add a city overhaul or follower framework, repeat the overlap review; a previously clean combination can become conflicting after that addition.

Dark, gray, or black face is a diagnostic clue that the final NPC record and loaded FaceGen data may not match. It can arise from conflicting plugin edits, an unintended order, missing FaceGen files, or an asset overwrite from another mod.
Start with the affected NPC
- Write down the NPC’s name and location and confirm that the problem affects the intended character, not a similarly named replacer.
- In xEdit, inspect the NPC record and identify the plugin that wins the conflict.
- In the mod manager, locate that NPC’s FaceGen mesh and texture files and identify which mod supplies the winning copies.
- Compare the record’s appearance source with the asset source. If they come from different overhauls, correct the priorities or use a patch that supplies a consistent pair.
- Check the overhaul’s page for a missing optional file, a required archive, or an edition-specific installation step.
- Retest after rebuilding or reinstalling only the affected files, rather than changing unrelated load-order entries.
When the face is unchanged
An unchanged face usually means another plugin record or another mod’s assets are winning. Confirm that the overhaul actually covers that NPC, that the correct variant is enabled, and that the FaceGen paths are not being overwritten by a later-priority mod.
When behavior disappeared
If the face looks correct but dialogue, schedules, or packages are missing, inspect the non-appearance fields in the winning NPC record. Use a compatibility patch or a conflict-resolution patch that forwards the desired behavior while retaining the appearance data.
Do not treat a cosmetic fix as a compatibility patch
The Face Discoloration Fix mod description warns: “if you have a conflict in your load order that breaks those mods, this mod will not be able to restore the intended appearance.” Its page lists an update for Skyrim Special Edition 1.6.629 and later; verify the current page before relying on that version statement. A discoloration utility may address a rendering condition, but it cannot reconstruct the record and FaceGen combination that your load order has made inconsistent.

9. Final pre-install checklist
- Exact edition and runtime recorded.
- Current overhaul page read for requirements, optional files, installation instructions, incompatibilities, and patches.
- All overlapping appearance, AI, dialogue, city, population, follower, and quest mods identified.
- Desired appearance winner chosen for each overlapping NPC.
- Plugin winner and FaceGen asset winner checked separately.
- Compatibility patches confirmed for the exact mod versions.
- xEdit review completed for unclear or high-impact conflicts.
- Test profile, backup, and representative in-game checks prepared.
