Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a speech-to-text API by pricing your actual audio workload, measuring latency on representative audio, and checking data handling for the exact endpoint and mode you plan to use. A vendor’s hourly rate, “real-time” label, or zero-retention claim is not enough on its own: channel count, endpoint behavior, configuration, and contract terms can change the result.
How to compare speech-to-text API costs
Start with a workload estimate, not the headline rate. API bills can depend on the recognition model, audio duration, number of channels, batch versus streaming or synchronous requests, and optional features. Storage and related cloud services may be billed separately.

Build a monthly cost estimate
Use this worksheet for a first pass:
Estimated cost = audio hours × effective hourly rate × billable channel count + model or feature charges + storage and platform charges.

Then add the effects of expected retries and peak concurrency. Billing treatment varies, so verify whether each item is charged by duration, request, feature, or resource. Calculate a typical month and a peak month before committing, and ask how volume commitments or annual prepayment affect the rate.

For Google Cloud Speech-to-Text V2, successfully processed audio is billed in one-second increments. Google identifies channel count, audio length, recognition model, batch method, and API version as pricing factors; each channel is billed separately, so multi-channel audio can increase billable duration. Storing audio in Cloud Storage or using other Google Cloud resources can add charges. Dynamic batch is a discounted option for workloads that do not need an urgent result. Check the Google Cloud Speech-to-Text pricing page for current rates and tiers.
Deepgram’s pricing page lists model-specific rates, pay-as-you-go and annual Growth plans, usage and concurrency limits, and a free-credit offer. AssemblyAI says multichannel audio is billed per channel; its pricing page describes model options, language coverage, and diarization availability for prerecorded and realtime transcription. These live commercial details can change, so compare the current provider rate cards against the same workload assumptions.

Make the comparison workload-specific
- Write down monthly audio hours, peak-month hours, channel count, and whether audio is batch, synchronous, or streaming.
- Specify the model, languages, and features you need, including diarization or formatting options.
- Ask how each provider bills channel count, retries, and any minimum duration or request.
- Include storage, cloud-platform resources, and any volume commitment in the estimate.
- Check operational limits such as concurrency, maximum file duration, accepted formats, and supported languages.
What latency means for a speech-to-text API
For streaming speech, “latency” is not a single measurement. A partial transcript may appear while a person is speaking, the final transcript may arrive after an utterance ends, and the system may take additional time to decide that the conversational turn is over.
Recommended Free Tools
- Emission latency: time from a word being spoken to the partial transcript containing it being emitted.
- Time to complete transcript (TTCT), or transcription delay: time from the end of an utterance to its final text.
- End-of-turn finalization latency: time from a person stopping speech until the system signals that the conversational turn is complete.
- Time to first token or byte: a useful startup measure, but not a substitute for the others. AssemblyAI warns that early emissions can occur before speech, making this metric misleading when considered alone.
For live applications, record all four where relevant. For offline transcription, compare wall-clock completion time with audio duration, along with transcript quality. There is no neutral apples-to-apples multi-provider latency statistic established here, so do not treat a vendor’s “fast” claim as a universal ranking. See AssemblyAI’s streaming evaluation guidance for its discussion of evaluation methods and benchmark limitations.

Run a same-audio bake-off
- Choose representative audio. Include the accents, languages, noise, vocabulary, names, and numbers your product actually encounters. Use the same clips or live scenarios for every candidate.
- Match the test conditions. Keep the network location, microphone or source files, channel configuration, audio chunking, language, punctuation and formatting settings, and endpointing behavior consistent.
- Measure repeated sessions. Record emission latency, TTCT, and end-of-turn finalization latency for streaming. Report median and tail results, not just one unusually quick run.
- Score usefulness as well as speed. Compare word error and important-entity errors, and check whether partial text changes or stabilizes in a way your interface can handle.
- Test the actual product path. A file-based test may not represent the microphone, network, chunking, and turn-taking behavior users will experience.
Google recommends 100-millisecond audio frames as a tradeoff between latency and efficiency, noting that larger frames add latency. That is a starting point, not a substitute for testing your own chunking and network path. Google’s best-practices guidance discusses frame sizing, and its streaming recognition documentation describes the streaming interface, which uses gRPC.
What to verify about audio and transcript retention
Ask about both input audio and generated text, and verify the answer against the exact endpoint, mode, configuration, and contract. “Not used for training” does not by itself mean “not retained”: service artifacts, abuse-monitoring logs, metadata, or application state may follow different rules.

- Is audio retained? Is the transcript retained? For what purpose and how long?
- Does the default permit model improvement or training? Is opt-out a project setting or a flag that must be sent on every request?
- Can abuse or security logs contain content even when training is disabled, and what is their retention period?
- Does the endpoint store output artifacts for retrieval? How do expiry and deletion work, including processing delays after a TTL ends?
- What metadata remains when content is not retained? Can usage logs be exported or deleted?
- Where is content processed and stored? Does the available regional option cover the endpoint and features you use?
- Are modified-retention or zero-data-retention controls available to your account, and do any endpoint features remain outside them?
Provider-specific policies to check
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text: Google says it does not use customer content except to provide the service unless the customer participates in data logging. Streaming and synchronous requests are processed in memory without storing customer data. For asynchronous requests, output transcripts are held for approximately five days for convenient retrieval; the STT service does not store input audio. Processing is global unless a US or EU multi-region endpoint is selected; Google does not offer single-region processing. Verify how data-logging participation and the selected endpoint affect your case in Google’s data usage FAQ.

Deepgram says customers can opt out by setting mip_opt_out=true on prerecorded and streaming STT requests. It says audio and transcripts are retained only as long as required to process a request, while request metadata and usage logs remain retrievable for 90 days. Make sure the opt-out flag reaches every relevant request. Deepgram lists a dedicated EU processing endpoint on its pricing and security page; confirm the geography and terms that apply to your service.

OpenAI API audio endpoints: OpenAI says API data is not used for model training unless a customer opts in. Abuse-monitoring logs may retain customer content for up to 30 days by default, subject to exceptions such as legal requirements and endpoint-specific application state. Modified Abuse Monitoring and Zero Data Retention require eligibility and prior approval; some features may still store application state. Check the current endpoint table for /v1/audio/transcriptions and related calls rather than inferring endpoint behavior from an organization-level setting. See OpenAI’s API data controls.
AssemblyAI: Its production retention FAQ says asynchronous final transcription artifacts have a one-hour minimum TTL. The artifacts use AWS DynamoDB TTL; deletion begins at expiry, but processing can lag from minutes to hours and has sometimes taken a few days. The FAQ also distinguishes the model-training environment from the production environment, so verify training opt-out separately from production artifact retention. See AssemblyAI’s retention FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to shortlist providers for your use case
| Workload or requirement | What to prioritize | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Batch or offline transcription | Cost at expected and peak audio volume, throughput, and accuracy on your files. | Batch mode rate, completion time, artifact retention, file-duration and format limits, and storage charges. |
| Live voice or conversational features | Emission latency, finalization behavior, transcript stability, and accuracy on the actual microphone and network path. | Chunk size, endpointing controls, concurrency, streaming interface, and all latency measures across repeated sessions. |
| High-volume use | Effective rate at your volume and predictable performance at peak concurrency. | Volume tiers or commitments, channel billing, usage limits, retries, and any platform add-ons. |
| Sensitive content or strict geography | Endpoint-specific retention and processing-location commitments that meet your requirements. | Training defaults and opt-out, abuse logs, artifact deletion, regional scope, contract terms, and approval requirements for retention controls. |
| Specialized vocabulary or language needs | Measured accuracy for your languages, accents, names, numbers, and domain terms. | Model and language availability, feature support, and entity-level errors on representative audio. |
For every shortlisted API, keep the comparison consistent: record its model and API version, workload mode, channels and audio volume, full estimated charges, latency definitions and test conditions, accuracy results, retention and opt-out mechanics, processing and storage geography, contract requirements, and operational limits. The best fit is the one that meets your quality, timing, cost, and data requirements on that workload—not necessarily the one with the lowest published rate or fastest headline.
