Before buying XRP, confirm that a reputable platform supports it where you live, calculate the full purchase and withdrawal cost, and decide who will control the keys. XRP is the digital asset native to the XRP Ledger; buying it is not the same as buying shares in Ripple. Your main custody choice is between relying on a provider to hold the keys and managing them yourself.
Know what you are buying
XRP is an open-source digital asset native to the XRP Ledger. Ripple describes itself as a technology company; buying XRP does not give you ownership of Ripple. Ripple also says it does not endorse or recommend exchanges. Check availability and terms directly with platforms serving your jurisdiction, rather than treating a general listing as a recommendation. Check the platform and total cost
Before funding an account, confirm that the platform lets customers in your location buy, hold, and withdraw XRP on the network you intend to use. Compare the quoted execution price—including any spread—with all applicable fees. The headline trading fee is not necessarily the full cost.
- Purchase and funding: Check the quoted price, trading fee, and any payment-method or deposit charge.
- Withdrawal: Check whether XRP withdrawals are supported, the withdrawal charge, minimums, and processing terms. If you plan to move XRP to another wallet, include this cost.
- Custody: Ask about transaction, transfer, annual, setup, and closure fees. These may apply to a separate custodian and are not XRPL network fees.
Costs and withdrawal terms vary by platform, payment method, location, and time. Review the provider’s current fee schedule and terms before committing funds. Choose who controls the keys
Custody is about who controls the private keys, not whether a wallet is a phone app or a physical device. Exchange accounts commonly use custodial arrangements: the provider controls the keys, and you rely on it for access and withdrawals. Self-custody means you control the keys and are responsible for keeping them and their recovery information safe.

These options can be combined: some people keep funds with a custodian for convenience and use self-custody for other holdings. Neither arrangement is universally safer; each shifts responsibility between provider dependence and personal key management. Understand recovery before choosing self-custody
A wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions; it does not hold XRP like a physical wallet holds cash. A recovery phrase or other recovery information may restore access if a device or app is lost. Anyone who obtains that information may be able to control the funds, so keep it private and secure, and never share it with someone claiming to be support.

A hardware wallet can reduce exposure of keys to an internet-connected device while it is disconnected, but it cannot protect you if you reveal the recovery phrase or approve a malicious transaction. Separate XRPL reserves from fees
As documented for XRPL Mainnet at the time of writing (October 4, 2026), the base reserve is 1 XRP per account and the owner reserve is 0.2 XRP per ledger object. Reserves are balances required by network rules, not charges paid to an exchange. Validators can change reserve settings, and other XRPL networks may use different values, so check the current network documentation before relying on these figures. XRPL reserve documentation.
The documented standard minimum reference transaction cost on XRPL is 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) as of October 4, 2026. Network load can increase the required cost. The transaction cost is destroyed rather than paid to a validator or service provider; an exchange’s withdrawal charge is separate. Verify transfer details before sending
- Confirm the network. Make sure the sender and receiving service support the same XRP Ledger network. Do not assume that an asset labeled XRP on another network uses the same transfer route.
- Copy the receiving address. Get it from the intended wallet or exchange deposit screen and check it carefully before confirming.
- Check the destination tag requirement. Some exchange-hosted XRP deposits use a destination tag to route funds to the right customer. Ask the receiving service whether one is required and use its exact instructions.
- Consider a small test transfer. If fees and minimums make it practical, send a small amount first and confirm both arrival and crediting before sending more. A test reduces some operational risk but cannot guarantee against loss.
If a tag is missing or incorrect, contact the receiving service; it may be able to help locate or credit the funds, but recovery is not guaranteed. Ripple says it cannot reverse ledger transactions. See Ripple’s transfer guidance.
