Waste Connections has the qualities of a durable, cash-generative service business, but that does not make its shares a good investment at every price. The long-term case depends on whether normalized earnings and cash flow can grow enough to justify the valuation, while the company manages debt, acquisitions, capital needs, and environmental and operating risks.

The business combines recurring local collection with transfer stations, landfills, rail transport, recycling, and renewable-fuel generation. Waste collection is an essential service, which can support repeat demand; however, providing it requires workers, trucks, facilities, fuel, regulatory compliance, and long-term landfill obligations. That operating model suggests potential durability, not immunity from cost pressure, execution problems, or regulatory and environmental liabilities.
Are the financial results growing?
For 2025, Waste Connections reported revenue of $9.467 billion, up 6.1% from 2024, and adjusted EBITDA of $3.125 billion, up 7.7% and equal to 33.0% of revenue. These adjusted figures are non-GAAP measures; they can help assess operating performance but should be read alongside reported results and the company’s definitions. Company FY 2025 results

- Used Book in Good Condition
Net income attributable to Waste Connections was $1.077 billion in 2025, compared with $617.6 million in 2024. That increase needs context: the company reported $109.7 million of impairments and other operating items in 2025 versus $613.0 million in 2024. The much larger prior-year charges affect the comparison, so the net-income change alone is not a clean measure of underlying growth. Investors should examine the components of earnings and cash generation rather than extrapolate the headline increase.
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, revenue was $4.932 billion, up from $4.635 billion in the same period of 2025, and adjusted EBITDA was $1.610 billion, compared with $1.499 billion. In Q2 2026, the company reported 32.8% adjusted EBITDA margin and 70 basis points of underlying margin expansion, while also noting fuel-cost pressure and lower commodity values. What does management expect in 2026?
After its Q2 2026 results, Waste Connections gave a 2026 outlook of $10.02–$10.05 billion in revenue, $3.33–$3.34 billion in adjusted EBITDA, and $1.40–$1.45 billion in adjusted free cash flow. These are company forecasts, not guarantees. Management said the outlook assumes no change in the economic environment or underlying trends and excludes acquisitions that may close later in the year. The company’s calculation starts with operating cash flow, adjusts for certain items, and subtracts capital expenditures. Management presents such measures as supplements to GAAP figures, and other companies may calculate them differently. For an investor, the useful question is whether cash remaining after necessary investment can support debt reduction, acquisitions, and shareholder distributions over time.
Is WCN stock expensive?
At the October 2, 2026 close, Stock Analysis reported a WCN share price of $153.82, a trailing P/E of 37.15, and a forward P/E of 26.31. These are point-in-time third-party figures; the forward P/E depends on estimates and can change. They provide valuation context, not a stand-alone buy-or-sell answer. Stock Analysis WCN ratios
The central valuation question is whether future normalized earnings and cash flow can compound sufficiently to support the price paid. A practical assessment should test more than one scenario, including different assumptions for organic growth, acquisitions, margins, capital spending, interest expense, and the valuation multiple investors are willing to pay. A strong business can still produce disappointing stock returns if expectations embedded in its share price prove too optimistic.

How do acquisitions, debt, and shareholder returns affect the case?
Acquisitions are one of Waste Connections’ growth levers. The company reported completing acquisitions with approximately $330 million in annualized revenue in 2025. Acquired revenue is not the same as value creation: investors need to consider purchase cost, integration, expected returns, and whether added debt or investment reduces future financial flexibility. Waste Connections FY 2025 Form 10-K
At December 31, 2025, the company reported debt-to-EBITDA leverage of 2.75 times. It also reported returning $839.3 million to shareholders during 2025. Those figures make it worth monitoring how management balances investment, debt capacity, and cash distributions. Shareholder returns in one year do not establish the amount or pattern of future distributions. Company FY 2025 results

What could weaken the long-term investment case?
Waste Connections’ FY 2025 filing identifies a range of risks that can affect results and cash generation. Relevant issues include competition and contract losses; customer pricing; labor availability, costs, and union activity; fuel and other operating expenses; seasonality and economic conditions; acquisitions and integration; landfill capacity, closure, and post-closure obligations; environmental matters and litigation; insurance; cybersecurity; and access to credit markets and debt refinancing. Waste Connections FY 2025 Form 10-K
In the near term, the Q2 2026 release highlighted rapidly increasing fuel-related costs and comparatively lower commodity values. These illustrate how cost inflation and commodity exposure can offset operating improvements. The company’s guidance is also subject to the risks and uncertainties described in its filings. The company describes its strategy and culture as differentiators, but that is management’s characterization rather than independent proof of a lasting competitive advantage. Investors should judge execution through disclosed operating and financial results and continue to account for the industry’s local competition and substantial labor and capital requirements. What should an investor monitor?
- Organic performance: Separate growth from acquisitions and assess pricing, volumes, customer retention, and service execution.
- Margins and cash conversion: Track whether EBITDA growth translates into operating cash and free cash flow after capital expenditures.
- Acquisition discipline: Consider the cost and returns of acquired operations, integration progress, and the effect on leverage.
- Balance-sheet flexibility: Follow debt, interest expense, refinancing access, and capital allocation alongside shareholder distributions.
- Operating and environmental exposure: Watch fuel, labor, landfill capacity and obligations, regulation, litigation, and insurance developments.
- Valuation: Reassess the share price and earnings expectations using current information rather than treating a dated P/E snapshot as permanent.
