Before buying XRP or another cross-border payments token, check whether payment providers actually need that token for the routes you care about, whether both sides have usable liquidity, and what it costs to convert and receive the money. Fast ledger settlement or low network fees do not, by themselves, show that a token is widely used or that its price will rise.
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger; Ripple is a company associated with the ecosystem, not another name for the token. The distinction matters: a payment service can use the ledger or related products without necessarily creating demand for XRP. The checks below help separate a network’s capabilities from the economics, legal access and custody risks of owning its token.

What are XRP, the XRP Ledger and Ripple?
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a distributed ledger network. XRP is its native digital asset, used for transaction fees and potentially as a bridge asset in cross-currency transfers. Ripple is a company associated with the ecosystem; it is not the token or the ledger itself. A 2026 SEC-filed registration statement describes the network’s stated primary function this way: The XRP Network differentiates itself from other digital asset networks in that its stated primary function is transactional utility, not store of value.
That is the filing’s characterization, not a regulator’s endorsement or proof of how much XRP is currently used. Read the SEC-filed XRP registration statement.

The filing describes a role for gateways and market makers in cross-currency settlement. Each conversion and payout depends on real counterparties, liquidity and access to local payment rails. A payment provider might instead use another XRP Ledger-issued asset, a stablecoin, its own service or conventional rails. Use of the ledger is not the same thing as use of XRP.

Does cross-border payment use mean XRP will go up?
No. Payment utility can create a reason to hold or move a token, but it does not establish how much demand reaches the token, whether that demand exceeds available supply, or what price the market will assign it. The 2026 SEC-filed registration statement says XRP’s market price fluctuates against other assets and describes its value as driven by supply and demand, much of it speculative. Network performance and investment outcomes are separate questions.
Trace the payment route, not just the headline claim
- Ask whether XRP itself is used on the specific corridor, or whether the service uses a different asset or payment rail.
- Identify who supplies liquidity on both sides and how each fiat conversion occurs.
- Check who receives the funds, how and when they can withdraw or redeem them, and what happens if a provider or intermediary is unavailable.
- Look for actual corridor coverage and two-sided liquidity rather than assuming that a bridge design proves live, dependable access.
Separate ledger metrics from the full cost and time
The 2026 SEC-filed registration statement reports typical XRP Ledger transaction confirmation in 3–5 seconds, capacity of up to 1,500 transactions per second, and a transaction fee of approximately 0.00001 XRP. These are network characteristics as reported in the filing, not independent live testing, a guarantee of a remittance’s arrival time, or a forecast of token value. A user’s end-to-end experience also depends on exchange spreads and fees, liquidity, fiat payout processing, intermediaries and local rails. Compare the total amount paid and received and the elapsed time across the whole route, not only the ledger transfer.

How should you check XRP supply and concentration?
XRP was created at launch rather than mined gradually: SEC-filed materials state that all 100 billion tokens were created in 2012. Supply figures about Ripple’s holdings and escrow need dates attached. A Bitwise XRP ETF registration statement filed in 2026 reports that, as of March 31, 2025, Ripple held 4.5 billion XRP and had another 37.1 billion XRP in escrow. It describes releases of 1 billion XRP per month from certain escrow accounts and says a majority had historically been returned to escrow. Those are the filing’s historical figures and account; they are not current balances or a prediction that a billion XRP enters the market each month.

When assessing supply, consider concentration, scheduled releases and the amount of liquidity available to buyers and sellers. Do not treat an escrow release as equivalent to tokens sold into the market, or assume that a large total supply translates directly into a particular price. What is XRP’s U.S. legal status?
Do not reduce the U.S. court history to either “XRP is always a security” or “XRP is legally cleared.” An SEC-filed 2025 annual report describes the district court’s July 2023 rulings as finding certain direct institutional XRP sales by Ripple to be unregistered securities sales, while not finding programmatic secondary-market sales to be unregistered securities sales. The filing says the court entered final judgment in August 2024 and the parties dropped their appeals in August 2025, leaving those rulings intact. The account is specific to kinds of transactions and U.S. proceedings; it does not settle the treatment of every transaction, product, venue or jurisdiction.
The SEC’s separate interpretive release, last updated March 23, 2026, provides broader crypto guidance, but it is not a substitute for the case-specific court account. Check the legal availability and terms for the exact product and venue in your jurisdiction, and seek qualified advice if the consequences matter to you. Neither the court history nor the release guarantees that a particular service will list XRP or remain available. Read the XRP investment trust annual report and the SEC’s March 23, 2026 interpretive release.

How should you compare buying venues and custody?
Buying access and control after purchase are separate risks. Before choosing a venue, review its jurisdiction and legal availability, trading fee and spread, order-book depth, deposit and withdrawal routes, custody terms and what recourse or withdrawal options apply if it freezes withdrawals or fails.

A custodian may instead change its own internal account records without transferring XRP on-ledger. The SEC-filed 2026 registration statement warns that off-ledger transfers do not receive the same protocol recording and validation. Understand which kind of transaction you are making and what evidence of ownership or transfer the service provides.
Choose custody based on your ability to manage it
- Custodial account: A provider controls the keys for assets held on your behalf. Check withdrawal rules, account recovery and the provider’s failure terms; an account balance is not the same as direct control of an on-ledger account.
- Software wallet: You control the keys, so protect the device and recovery information. The Bitwise filing recounts an April 2025 malicious-code incident involving an XRP Ledger JavaScript package and notes the risk of private-key or wallet-seed theft through third-party software. Use trusted software sources and treat unexpected wallet prompts or package changes cautiously.
- Hardware wallet: This is an optional self-custody route, not a requirement or a guarantee against phishing, loss, price changes or problems before withdrawal. Verify XRP support for the exact model and software combination before sending funds.
- Multisignature setup: Requiring multiple keys can change how transactions are authorized, but adds setup and recovery complexity. Understand how signers, backups and recovery work before relying on it.
The Bitwise filing puts key control plainly: Whoever possesses the private key associated with an XRP Ledger account effectively controls the XRP held by that account.
If you choose self-custody, protect and back up recovery information securely, then practice the wallet’s receiving and recovery procedures with a small amount before transferring a meaningful balance. A lost private key without a backup can mean permanent loss of access. The filing reports a 10 XRP minimum account reserve as current in its text; verify the reserve requirement against current ledger settings before funding an account.
What should you compare with another cross-border payments token?
Apply the same questions to each candidate rather than ranking tokens by throughput claims alone. A useful comparison covers:
Quick Recap
- Token necessity: Is the token itself required for the payment route, or can the service operate with other assets or rails?
- Corridor liquidity: Are there usable buyers, sellers and conversion partners on both ends of the routes that matter?
- Concentration and governance: Who can influence the issuer, validators or network decisions, and how concentrated is that influence?
- Supply mechanics: How was supply created, and what issuance, escrow releases or unlocks could affect available supply? Keep figures tied to their dates and sources.
- End-to-end economics: What does the sender pay, what does the recipient receive, how long does payout take, and how reliable is that payout?
- Access and custody: Is the asset legally and practically available through reputable venues in your jurisdiction, and can you store and recover it using a custody method you understand?
