Track total cost per completed task—including retries, tools, retrieval, and infrastructure—not token prices alone.
Start with a cost and quality baseline
Before changing prompts or models, measure what each workflow costs and how well it performs. A portfolio-wide bill can hide an expensive workflow or a cheaper route that quietly produces worse answers.
- Record request volume, input and output tokens, model or service, tool calls, retrieval activity, latency, failures, and retries.
- Choose a task-specific quality measure, such as factual accuracy, successful task completion, or adherence to required instructions. Keep representative examples, including difficult and unusual cases.
- Calculate cost per completed outcome, including inference, orchestration, retrieval, and infrastructure. Attribute spend to individual workflows where possible.
- Set budgets or alerts if your provider supports them, and maintain a cost model as usage patterns and prices change. AWS guidance includes invocation, event, retrieval, and orchestration costs alongside inference: Architecting generative AI applications for production and Cost optimization for serverless AI.
This baseline is the comparison point for every optimization: a lower bill is not a win if task success falls or retries erase the savings.
Reuse stable context with prompt caching
If requests repeatedly send the same system instructions, tool definitions, or other fixed context, see whether your provider can cache a reusable prompt prefix. Keep stable material together and in a consistent order so requests can qualify for cache reuse; put changing user-specific content after it where the provider’s design allows.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check cache eligibility, minimum prefix length, write and read rates, retention, routing behavior, and data-handling terms for the specific model and organization. OpenAI documents a 1,024-token minimum cacheable prompt length for GPT-5.6 and later, along with model-dependent cache write and read pricing; do not assume the same threshold or rates apply to other models: OpenAI prompt caching. Cache writes can cost more than uncached input, so savings depend on repeated eligible use. Track cache reads and misses and compare actual workflow cost.
Provider examples can help identify where to test, but they are not forecasts for your workload. Anthropic reports 2.7 to 5.3 times lower agent-loop cost across benchmarks in its guide, and 83% lower bill—or 88% with input trimming—for its measured small triage-agent workload. Those results are specific to the workloads and conditions described by Anthropic: Optimizing for cost and intelligence.

Remove waste without removing useful context
Audit what each request actually sends and does. Common candidates include repeated conversation history, irrelevant retrieved passages, fetched-page boilerplate, oversized images, unused tool definitions, overly verbose outputs, duplicate requests, and unnecessary tool calls.
- Send only the history, tool schemas, and retrieved passages needed for the current task.
- Set an appropriate output length or ask for a structured response when the workflow does not need lengthy prose.
- Remove duplicate calls and redundant agent steps; make a request or tool call only when it can change the result.
- Measure the effect of prompt and retrieval changes. Smaller context is not automatically better if it removes necessary evidence or instructions.
Retrieval can reduce the context sent to a model, but it introduces its own retrieval and infrastructure costs. Compare total cost and answer quality for your task rather than assuming retrieval or a longer context window is cheaper: RAG versus Long Context: Examining Frontier Large Language Models for Question Answering. Anthropic reports 24% fewer input tokens with a higher score in its programmatic tool-calling results on agentic search benchmarks; that result is tied to its documented setup, not a universal outcome: Optimizing for cost and intelligence.

Batch work that does not need an immediate answer
Evaluations, backfills, scheduled jobs, and other unattended work may fit asynchronous processing. The trade-off is delay, and some lower-cost options can have availability constraints; do not route interactive requests into them unless the user experience can tolerate those conditions.
| Option | Documented cost and timing | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic Batch API | Anthropic documents 50% off every token, with results available any time within 24 hours; this is specific to its Batch API. Source. | Unattended work that can wait for completion within the documented window. |
| OpenAI Batch API | OpenAI describes Batch API as a lower-cost option with slower processing; consult current API documentation for applicable terms. Source. | Workloads that can tolerate asynchronous completion. |
| OpenAI flex processing | OpenAI describes flex processing as lower cost with slower processing and occasional resource unavailability. Source. | Non-urgent jobs that can handle slower service and possible temporary unavailability. |
Confirm current service terms and measure completion time and failure handling in your own workflow before adopting an asynchronous route.

Route simpler tasks to cheaper models—with an escalation path
Group requests by complexity and risk, then test a lower-priced model on representative examples. Send routine requests to that model only when it clears the workflow’s quality threshold. Escalate uncertain, failed, or high-risk cases to a more capable model, and count verification, routing, retries, and escalation in the cost comparison.
- Build an evaluation set that reflects the task’s routine cases, edge cases, and likely failure modes.
- Compare candidate models on task quality, latency, and total cost per completed outcome.
- Define a reliable escalation condition, such as a failed validation, missing required information, or a confidence signal you have tested.
- Run the full route—including verification and retries—against the baseline before switching production traffic.
AWS recommends tiered model use and escalation when a simpler model fails or lacks confidence: Architecting generative AI applications for production. FrugalGPT explores model cascades and reports up to 98% lower costs in experiments matching the best individual model’s performance in that study; this is an experimental result, not an expected saving for a different workload: How to Use Large Language Models While Reducing Cost and Improving Performance.

AWS also advertises up to 30% cost reduction without compromising accuracy for Bedrock Intelligent Prompt Routing. Treat that as an AWS claim for that service, not an independent guarantee: Amazon Bedrock Cost Optimization.
Use evaluations and traces as the quality guardrail
Keep a stable evaluation set based on real requests and meaningful edge cases. Run it before and after changes to prompts, retrieval, model choice, or routing; examine both output quality and workflow outcomes. For agent workflows, inspect traces for tool selection, handoffs, instruction adherence, and guardrail failures, not just the final answer.
OpenAI’s guidance covers repeatable model evaluation and agent-workflow traces, datasets, and graders: Model optimization and Evaluate agent workflows. OpenAI notes that model behavior can vary across snapshots and families, so a passing evaluation should not be treated as permanent proof. Re-run checks as models and workflows change.
Compare optimizations on the dimensions that matter
For each candidate change, compare:
- Quality: task success, answer accuracy, and performance on important edge cases.
- Total cost: inference, cache writes and reads, retrieval, tools, infrastructure, retries, and escalation per completed outcome.
- Latency and availability: whether the route meets response-time needs and can recover from failures.
- Workload fit: repeated cacheable prefixes, tolerance for batch delays, task complexity, and risk.
- Operational cost: effort to implement, monitor, maintain, and update evaluations.
- Data constraints: retention, routing, and regional requirements relevant to your organization.
Prompt caching and routing product claims are bounded by provider support and service conditions. AWS advertises up to 90% lower costs and up to 85% lower latency for prompt caching on supported Bedrock models; those are maximum product claims, not general results: Amazon Bedrock Cost Optimization. Use your own measurements to decide whether a change preserves quality and reduces end-to-end cost.
