Before paying for electronics or an appliance online, verify the actual seller and listing, calculate the full delivered cost, check delivery and return terms, and make sure you can get help if the deal goes wrong. For appliances, also confirm the space and operating costs; for any major purchase, read the written warranty. These checks help you compare the whole deal rather than just the headline price.
Is the seller and marketplace trustworthy?
Check both the marketplace and the individual seller. Some marketplaces only connect buyers and sellers, leaving the parties to resolve payment, delivery, returns, or refunds. Others offer a complaint or refund process, but eligibility may depend on the seller, listing, and deadline. Read the current terms and confirm that the specific item qualifies before you rely on a protection. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking recent reviews from more than one source and not relying on star ratings alone; fake positive and negative reviews exist, and incentives may not be obvious.

- Find the seller’s name and contact details, and check recent feedback across multiple sources.
- Ask questions before checkout and keep the answers in writing.
- Keep payment inside the marketplace if you are relying on its buyer protections; an off-site payment may leave you without them.
- Treat HTTPS as a connection-security measure, not proof that a seller or website is legitimate. As the FTC explains, encryption does not establish trustworthiness.
Be wary if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or another hard-to-reverse payment method. Credit cards provide dispute rights in common situations such as a duplicate charge or goods that never arrive; contact your card issuer promptly and follow its instructions. Some secure payment systems also offer buyer protections, but check their terms before paying.

Does the listing describe the exact item you want?
Compare the manufacturer and model number, not just the product name. Listings with similar names can describe different specifications or bundles. Confirm the condition, included parts, accessories, and any stated exclusions. For a used item, look for photos of the actual product: stock images do not show its condition or prove the seller has it. Read descriptions such as “refurbished,” “used,” and “as is” carefully. An unusually low price on expensive branded goods is a reason to check for counterfeiting or fraud, not a reason to skip verification.

For electronics, match the model and specifications to the features you need, and confirm what is included in the box. For appliances, check capacity and features as well as dimensions. Read expert and customer reviews from multiple sources for recurring complaints—for example, about noise, water use, or repair likelihood—rather than treating one review or an aggregate score as proof of quality.
What will you actually pay, and when will it arrive?
Compare the checkout total, not the advertised price. Add shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees, and check whether a discount has conditions. A sale or clearance item may have different return terms.

Read the promised ship or delivery date. Under U.S. federal guidance, a seller must ship as promised in its advertising. If it does not promise a shipping time, the general deadline described by the FTC is within 30 days after receiving your name, address, payment, or permission to charge you. If the seller cannot ship on time, FTC guidance says it must notify you and give you the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a refund. See the FTC’s guidance on orders that do not arrive. This is U.S. federal consumer guidance; applicable rights can also depend on your state and the transaction.

Before ordering, locate the return window and check what makes you eligible for a refund. Find out who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and whether sale or clearance terms differ. Do not assume the marketplace’s general policy applies to every listing; check the terms for the particular seller and item.

Keep a copy of the listing and return policy, the shipping promise, your receipt, and messages with the seller or marketplace. These records can help if the item is delayed, materially different from its description, or difficult to return. For a payment dispute, keep the payment statement as well and contact the card issuer or payment provider promptly.
Will the appliance fit and cost what you expect to run?
Measure the installation space
Measure the available space before ordering, and allow room for the door or lid to open fully and for safe ventilation. Check the product’s dimensions against the space and installation requirements, not just its advertised capacity. The FTC’s appliance guidance recommends checking fit and clearance before purchase.

- QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade

Compare energy use
For covered appliances, use the EnergyGuide label to compare energy use and estimated operating cost among similar products. The cost is an estimate based on typical use and a national average energy price; your actual bill depends on how you use the appliance and local energy rates. Covered categories include refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, central air conditioners, room and portable air conditioners, ceiling fans, pool heaters, and televisions. If a listing does not show the label, the FTC advises checking inside the appliance or on the seller’s or manufacturer’s website. ENERGY STAR is a separate efficiency label, with qualifying guidelines set by the EPA.
What does the warranty cover?
For major products such as home appliances, written warranties must be available before purchase, including for online sales, according to the FTC’s warranty guidance. Read the terms before checkout and check:
Best Value
- 11-foot Standout; 16-inch and 19.2-Inch stud center markings simplify framing jobs
- Blade arm our coating on the first 3" maximizes durability of the blade
- Mylar polyester film extends life of entire blade
- Top-forward blade lock makes locking and unlocking easy
- High-impact ABS case with durable rubber-holds up to heavy use
- How long coverage lasts, and whether registration is required.
- Which parts and repairs are covered, and what exclusions apply.
- Whether the company will repair, replace, or otherwise remedy a covered problem.
- Who handles a claim and whether you pay for labor, shipping, or other costs.
If the seller offers a separate service contract, compare its terms with the included warranty. Check whether it adds meaningful coverage rather than assuming that an extra plan is automatically worthwhile. Save the warranty and receipt.
How to compare two listings
When choosing between sellers or models, compare the parts of the deal that affect what you receive, spend, and can do if something goes wrong:
- Model fit: model number, dimensions, capacity, features, included components, and condition.
- Total ownership cost: purchase price, delivery and fees, estimated energy cost where applicable, and repair or service terms.
- Seller recourse: seller contact details, marketplace eligibility, return deadline, refund terms, and payment dispute options.
- Warranty support: coverage length, exclusions, repair process, labor or shipping charges, and claim contact.
- Evidence quality: model-specific documentation and recent reviews from multiple sources, considered with possible reviewer incentives.
Save the company name and website, product listing, order date, price, return policy, shipping promise, receipt, payment statement, and seller or marketplace messages. That record gives you the details you need if you have to ask for a return, refund, or payment review.
