Start the Android phone and choose the option to copy data from an iPhone during setup. A cable is the better choice if you want to transfer the widest range of data; wireless Android Switch can move contacts and photos but, in Google’s classic transfer flow, does not include messages. Turn off iMessage before switching, and plan a separate transfer for photos and videos stored in iCloud.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and make sure you can unlock the iPhone.
- Check that the Android phone has enough free storage for the data you plan to copy.
- Connect both phones to Wi-Fi and keep them connected throughout setup.
- Turn off iMessage on the iPhone before switching. If you use iMessage on other Apple devices, turn it off there too.
- If you plan to use a cable, check the connectors on both phones and use a cable or adapter that supports data transfer.
Google’s setup instructions say a transfer usually takes less than 30 minutes, but can take a few hours if you have a lot of data. This is an estimate, not a guarantee for a particular phone or photo library. Google’s iPhone-to-Android transfer instructions explain the current setup flow and requirements.

Choose cable or wireless transfer

These options appear in the new Android phone’s setup process, but screens and available transfer features differ among devices. Follow the prompts on your phone rather than assuming every Android model offers identical choices.
Transfer the data during Android setup
- Start the new Android phone and follow setup until you see the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone or iPad.
- Choose the cable or wireless method offered by the phone. For a cable transfer, connect the phones with a data-capable cable or the needed adapter. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the connected device, tap Trust.
- Follow the Android prompts to select the data you want to copy. Keep both phones connected and follow any on-screen instructions until the transfer finishes.
- Check the Android phone for your contacts, photos, videos, and messages. Items that are not included in the transfer need to be handled separately.
What transfers—and what needs another route
Google’s classic transfer table lists contacts and photos and videos as supported over either cable or wireless. Messages are listed for cable transfer, not classic wireless transfer. On eligible devices, Google’s upgraded flow can support a broader set of items, including messages stored in iCloud. The options shown during your phone’s setup determine what is available to you.

Photos and videos stored in iCloud do not move as part of the ordinary phone-to-phone copy. Google provides a separate process to transfer iCloud photos and videos to Google Photos; see Google’s transfer instructions for that route.
Google also lists paid apps and in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, and Health data among items that do not transfer through the standard process. Do not assume that every app or app-specific conversation will move just because you copied other data.

Make sure texts can reach your Android phone
Switching off iMessage helps messages get delivered to the Android phone instead of continuing to route through Apple’s messaging service. If texts do not arrive after the move, Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the following:
- iMessage is turned off on all iOS devices associated with your number.
- The SIM or eSIM is set up on the Android phone.
- Contacts are sending messages to your phone number rather than your Apple ID email address. Some people may need to start a new message addressed to your number.
- Some group conversations may need to be recreated.

Troubleshoot a transfer that fails or stalls
- Not enough Android storage: Deselect some data in the transfer, especially photos and videos, or move those through Google Photos instead.
- Wireless QR code will not scan: Check that the scanning app has camera permission, both phones have internet access, and the iPhone runs iOS 15 or later.
- The copy stalls: Restart the phones and try again. If it still hangs, select fewer data types.
- You tapped “Don’t trust” during a cable transfer: Unplug and reconnect the cable, then tap “Trust” on the iPhone.
Google’s steps and supported items can change and vary by phone and method. If your setup screens differ from these directions, use the options offered by your Android phone and check its manufacturer’s current instructions.
