Before choosing a wide, book-style foldable, check how it works in both forms: as a phone when closed and as a larger screen when open. Compare the cover screen’s width and shape, the inner display’s proportions, folded comfort, durability claims, software support, and the warranty and repair options available where you live. A bigger diagonal measurement alone does not tell you whether either screen will suit your hands or the apps you use.
Start with this buying checklist
- Closed-phone comfort: Check the cover screen’s width and aspect ratio, then try typing and reaching across it.
- Open-screen fit: Consider the inner display’s shape alongside its diagonal size. Try your real mix of reading, video, split-screen work, and apps.
- Portability: Handle the phone folded and open; compare weight and closed thickness for the exact models and configurations you are considering.
- Hinge and crease: Assess opening feel, hinge positions, and crease visibility separately from long-term reliability claims.
- Protection: Read the exact water and dust rating. Ratings cover specific test categories and do not guarantee a foldable display or hinge cannot fail.
- Ownership: Check update support, warranty, repair routes, parts availability, and repair costs for your country and seller.
- Local deal: Confirm current price, storage configuration, and availability with the manufacturer or local retailer; these can change by region and over time.
Compare the phone you will use when it is closed
The cover screen is the one you will use for quick replies, calls, and many everyday tasks. Its width and aspect ratio influence how much fits on screen, how comfortable typing feels, and whether one-handed use is practical. Do not use diagonal size as a substitute for trying the phone: two screens with similar diagonals can have different shapes and feel quite different in use.

For a concrete example, Samsung’s July 9, 2025 announcement lists a 6.5-inch cover display with a 21:9 aspect ratio for the Galaxy Z Fold7. Judge the inner display by shape and use, not size alone
A larger inner screen may make reading or multitasking more comfortable, but it is not automatically a better match for every app. Think about what you actually do on the open screen: read documents, watch video, run two apps at once, or use software that may not take advantage of the available area. A squarer panel can suit some multitasking layouts while making some video feel less natural.

Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement, dated August 20, 2025, describes an 8-inch inner display and a 6.4-inch outer display. Google’s announcement Tom’s Guide’s September 30, 2026 review reports a 7.6-inch, 4:3 main display for the Galaxy Z Fold8. Check portability in your own hand and pocket
Foldables trade a larger open display for a thicker folded form. Compare folded weight and closed thickness for the exact configurations on sale, then handle each phone if possible. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether the folded device feels comfortable in a pocket or whether its balance suits your grip. The available figures here do not establish a complete, standardized weight-and-thickness comparison across the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Galaxy Z Fold7, and Galaxy Z Fold8.

Separate hinge feel, crease visibility, and durability
These are related but different questions. A hinge can feel smooth in a brief demonstration without that proving long-term reliability; crease visibility is a hands-on judgment; and manufacturer durability language is a product claim, not an independently verified lifespan. Look for independent hands-on reviews for observations about feel and crease, and treat those observations as subjective rather than guarantees.

Google describes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as having a gearless hinge. Its product page says the hinge is “capable of handling 10+ years of folding.” That is Google’s claim, not independent evidence of how long an individual phone will last. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold product page

Understand what the IP rating does—and does not—say
IP ratings identify particular protection categories; do not turn them into a promise that a phone is immune to damage. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement describes IP68 water and dust resistance. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet lists IP48 water resistance. These are not equivalent ratings, and the Fold7 sheet does not establish that dust cannot affect its foldable mechanism.

Compare software support and the cost of ownership
