If Total War: Warhammer III mods are missing, refuse to activate, crash the game, or behave badly together, first identify where the failure happens. Confirm the mod is downloaded and current, then test with mods disabled before changing load order or local settings. The steps below apply to PC players using Steam, Epic, or Windows Store/Game Pass; launcher features and diagnostic paths vary by platform.
Identify the symptom and your setup
“Mods not working” can describe several different failures. Separating them helps avoid changing unrelated settings.

- Missing from the manager: the subscription, download, selected launcher, or displayed entry may be the issue.
- Visible but will not activate: check the manager’s subscription and local-version status, then consider compatibility.
- Crash at startup or campaign load: test whether the game works with mods disabled before investigating a combination.
- Loads but changes gameplay unexpectedly: look for interactions or ordering issues; a functioning launch does not prove that mods are compatible.
Record your store or platform, game version, launcher choice, mod names or Steam Workshop IDs, and the point at which the problem occurs. Note whether it began after a game update, a mod update, or a change to your active profile.
Confirm the launcher, subscription, and local mod
Choose the launcher you actually use
Creative Assembly documented three Steam launch choices: the original launcher, its newer Mod Manager offered as an Early Access option, and launching the game directly. The announcement described the new manager as a Steam option, not a universal replacement for every PC store; it also said the original launcher would remain available during development. See Creative Assembly’s Mod Manager announcement for the scope and features stated there.

If you use Epic or Windows Store/Game Pass, do not assume Steam manager instructions or indicators apply to your setup. Start with the launcher and mod-management route available for your store.
Check that the subscribed mod has downloaded
In the newer manager, Creative Assembly’s update dated 2026-04-28 added or improved search by mod title, pack filename, and Steam Workshop ID, along with subscription and local-version indicators. Use an exact Workshop ID when names are similar. The update also addressed confusing selection of entries that share a pack name or checksum, so verify the specific entry rather than relying on its displayed name alone. Details are in the April 2026 Mod Manager update.
If the manager shows a subscription but no matching local version, wait for the download to finish and check again before treating the symptom as an in-game conflict. A subscribed item that is not yet present locally cannot be expected to load.

Check whether a game or mod update changed compatibility
A mod that worked with an earlier game version can stop working after a game change. SEGA lists outdated mods among possible reasons the game may not function and recommends disabling or removing mods as a troubleshooting test. Creative Assembly likewise warns that user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates in its Hotfix 6.1.1 notes, published 2025-03-26.
Compare the failure date with the game’s update history and the mod author’s latest update or compatibility notes. Do not assume every update breaks mods, or that an inactive mod is abandoned without confirmation from its author.
Hotfix 6.1.1 also fixed a crash involving mod files with uppercase characters in their names. That was a specific issue fixed in that version, not evidence that uppercase filenames are a general cause of current failures.

Isolate the problem with reversible tests
Test the game with mods disabled
- Save or export your current profile if your manager offers that option. The newer manager’s documented features include saving and sharing profiles and activating mods used by a save; availability can depend on the launcher and current manager version.
- Deactivate all mods, then launch the game and reproduce the same action that previously failed.
- If the game still fails with mods disabled, focus next on game files or local settings rather than a mod-to-mod conflict.
- If the game works, restore a small group of mods and repeat the test. Keep a note of each group and result.
- When the failure returns, narrow that group further until you can identify the mod or combination associated with it. Check the relevant mod pages for current compatibility information.
This staged approach is a practical way to apply the official recommendation to deactivate or delete mods; it is not a guarantee that one particular mod is at fault. Avoid deleting files before preserving the profile or noting its contents.

Investigate order only when the symptom points to it
If a group works in one arrangement but not another, inspect ordering in the manager. Creative Assembly’s manager feature notes describe manual ordering in Advanced settings and improvements to automatic ordering; see the Mod Manager feature thread. Try a controlled change and retest rather than rearranging many entries at once.
There is no published universal order that guarantees compatibility for every mod combination. The official manager notes document features, not a compatibility matrix for arbitrary mods.

Verify game files and test local settings
Verify files after a game update or download problem
If the problem began after a game update or an incomplete-looking download, use your store’s game-file verification option. Creative Assembly’s Hotfix 6.1.1 notice specifically directs players to verify game-file integrity. The exact menu path varies between Steam, Epic, and Windows Store/Game Pass, so use the option provided by the store where you installed the game.
Move the preferences and cache folder only as a later test
For persistent launch problems after isolating mods, SEGA recommends backing up the preferences and cache files, then moving the game’s folder from %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly to test for corrupt or incorrect cached settings. Close the game first. Keep the moved folder intact and available so you can restore it if the test does not help; changing this folder can reset local preferences.

Collect useful diagnostics if the failure remains
When asking support for help, include the exact platform/store, game version, launcher, mod names or Workshop IDs, active order or profile, precise symptom, and the steps you have already tried. Attach a DXDIAG report and crash minidump when available; Creative Assembly’s support post asks for a problem description, steps tried, DXDIAG, and minidump.
