Before buying a used Tesla, verify the exact car by VIN, check for open recalls, inspect its condition and charging equipment, and confirm the warranty and ownership transfer for that vehicle. A seller’s description, a general warranty page, or a Certified Pre-Owned label cannot establish every detail of an individual car—especially its battery health.
1. Identify the exact car and review its records
Write down the VIN, model, model year, trim, odometer reading, market, and seller. Match the VIN on the car to the title and purchase paperwork. Ask for maintenance and repair records, title and accident history, and any available vehicle-history report.

Tesla says its U.S. Certified Pre-Owned listings include an AutoCheck history report; that listing feature does not independently verify the history of a privately sold car. See Tesla’s U.S. pre-owned guidance.
2. Check recalls by VIN
Use Tesla’s Recall Information page to check the specific VIN, and recheck close to purchase. Tesla says a car may be sold with an open recall awaiting repair. The company states that recall service is free regardless of the car’s age or mileage; ask whether outstanding work is complete or arrange to have it done.

3. Inspect the car in person
Inspect in daylight if possible, and test systems only when it is safe and practical. Tesla’s U.S. Certified Pre-Owned inspection description offers useful categories to check, but its program criteria are not a complete inspection standard for every private sale.
Body, glass, wheels, and tires
- Look for collision or structural repair signs, mismatched paint or panels, and damaged glass.
- Check wheels for damage and tires for uneven wear. Uneven wear may warrant a closer look at alignment or suspension.
- For context, Tesla lists a minimum tire tread depth of 5/32 inch for U.S. Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. That is a Tesla program criterion, not a guarantee about a private-sale car.
Brakes, controls, and cabin electronics
- Check for warning messages, interior damage, and faults in the displays, lights, and powered components.
- Where safe, check steering, suspension, brakes, and restraint systems. Tesla lists brake-pad thickness of at least 6 mm among its U.S. Certified Pre-Owned criteria; do not treat that threshold as a full mechanical assessment.
Charging port and equipment
Inspect the charging port and test charging functions where practical. Confirm exactly which connector, adapters, and charging equipment are included, and whether they suit the locations where you expect to charge.

If you cannot assess the car yourself, consider an independent inspection. The Tesla pages cited here do not establish a particular independent provider or a universal Tesla-specific inspection protocol.

4. Confirm battery evidence without guessing
Tesla’s published warranty information describes coverage, but it does not provide an individual used car’s battery state of health, expected real-world range, or a universal buyer-side pass/fail test. Ask for vehicle-specific records and review the car’s own displayed information. Treat a range figure as contextual evidence, not a battery-health test: displayed or observed range can depend on conditions and does not by itself establish battery condition. If battery condition is decisive, seek a qualified inspection and ask what it can actually measure.

5. Verify the warranty for this VIN
Tesla’s current U.S. general warranty page lists Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. It lists Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty coverage for 8 years, with mileage limits that vary by model and trim, and a 70% minimum battery-capacity retention term during the applicable warranty period. These are Tesla’s published terms, not a substitute for checking what remains on the car being sold.
Do not infer the mileage cap from a model name or year alone. Tesla says the vehicle-specific warranty is authoritative: check the car’s Specs & Warranty area in the Tesla app and review its original warranty documents. See Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty page.

6. Complete the Tesla ownership transfer
Tesla says the New Vehicle Limited Warranty follows the vehicle and transfers when ownership transfer is performed through Tesla. Confirm that the transfer is processed and that the car, including its coverage information, appears in your Tesla app. Do not rely only on the seller’s assurance that the account handover is complete.
7. Understand what Certified Pre-Owned does—and does not—mean
Tesla’s U.S. Certified Pre-Owned guidance says these vehicles pass a 119-point inspection, include an AutoCheck history report, and receive a Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty in addition to any remaining original New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Tesla’s current general warranty page describes the additional Basic warranty as 1 year or 10,000 miles after the original Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty expires. Read the documents for the specific car to confirm applicable terms and coverage.

Tesla says normal wear and cosmetic imperfections should be expected, and CPO vehicles may still be sold with open recalls. The program’s inspection criteria and extra warranty apply to Tesla’s CPO offering; they are not a blanket guarantee about private-party cars or proof that every issue has been ruled out.
8. Check charging fit and the full cost
Before agreeing on a price, confirm that your home or nearby charging options work with the car’s connector and the equipment included in the sale. Identify any adapters you would need for your intended charging locations rather than assuming a particular accessory is essential for everyone.
Compare the total cost, not just the asking price. Include insurance, registration and taxes, charging access, tires, likely immediate repairs, and the warranty that remains. If considering Tesla’s Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement, verify current eligibility and terms in the Tesla app or agreement documents. Tesla’s page describes coverage for certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for up to 24 months or 30,000 miles, with a $500 deductible per eligible service visit; unused coverage transfers after ownership transfer is processed. Those terms do not establish that the plan is available for every used Tesla. See Tesla’s Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement page.
9. Compare cars on the same basis
When choosing between two Teslas, record the same details for each so a lower asking price does not conceal higher immediate costs or weaker documentation.
| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity and history | VIN, model year, trim, mileage, title status, accident and repair records |
| Recalls | Current VIN-specific status and whether required repairs are complete |
| Condition | Inspection findings, tire tread, brake condition, damage, and faults |
| Charging | Included equipment, connector and adapter fit, and access to charging |
| Coverage | Warranty remaining for the exact vehicle and any applicable additional coverage |
| Battery evidence | Vehicle-specific records or inspection findings; distinguish these from a range estimate |
| Total cost | Price plus likely immediate repairs, tires, insurance, taxes, registration, and charging needs |
U.S. and Canada CPO details differ
The figures above for Tesla Certified Pre-Owned inspections and history reports refer to Tesla’s U.S. program. Tesla’s Canada page describes a 102-point inspection and a Carfax history report instead. Do not apply the U.S. 119-point or AutoCheck details to a Canadian purchase; check the rules, records, and consumer protections that apply where the car will be registered. See Tesla’s Canada pre-owned guidance.
